The ITER pulse scheduling system creates, approves and manage parameters that characterize plasma operation of ITER. JAEA analyzed requirements on the ITER plasma operations based on experience operating the JT-60U and designed essential functions. This system was designed to enable the change and reuse of parameters. The functions to support to check consistency between parameters and to assign parameter values are calculated by the system were proposed. These functions are useful to support operators.

Of particular importance for the assessment of electromagnetic loads on vacuum vessel and in-vessel components of ITER is the halo current which achieves a maximum during VDEs (VDE: vertical displacement event). However, halo current models have a limited development so far with a few exceptions such as a validation study of the JT-60U halo current modelling using the DINA code. Recently, several experimental groups have prepared systematic halo current data, and further model development and validation with these data need to be performed using an axisymmetric, two-dimensional, free boundary code, TSC. To enhance an understanding of the maximum halo current and large vertical shifts, a reference discharge was selected from those included in the ASDEX upgrade disruption database. Systematic TSC simulations were performed to mimic the observation of a slow VDE of hot plasma and an ensuing fast downward-going VDE during a subsequent plasma current quench. Careful parameter adjustment of the temperature and width of the halo region was examined to mimic measurements of the halo current. A spontaneous, downward-going VDE was reproduced accurately in a manner that closely resembled experimental observations.

Procurement preparation of ITER key components by JADA

The Japanese Government designated JAEA as the Domestic Agency of Japan (JADA) just after the entry into force of the ITER Agreement on 24th Oct. 2007. JADA has about 80 persons at Naka-site to carry out the in kind procurement in the ITER Project, and administrative departments in JAEA do jobs necessary for the procurement. According to the Common Understandings on Procurement Allocation, in kind procurements of JADA is about 16% of the total: about a half of superconducting toroidal field (TF) coils (25% of conductors, 100% of structures, 9 windings, case assembly of 9 coils), 100% of conductors for central solenoid coils, the remote handling equipment for shield blankets, high voltage parts of the neutral beam heating system (power supplies, bushing, beam accelerator, etc), 8 gyrotrons and one equatorial launcher for EC heating system, 10% of first wall panels on the shield blanket, 100% of the outer divertor target plate, the atmosphere detritiation system (ADS) in the tritium plant, and some basic diagnostics. The first procurement arrangement for 25% of TF superconductors (Nb$$_{3}$$Sn) was concluded on 28th November 2007 between the ITER Organization and JADA.

Modeling of L-H/H-L transition in TSC simulation using JT-60U experimental data

The neutral dynamics including fueling, divertor pumping, charge exchange penetration, wall retention and so on would complicate the analysis of ITER plasma behavior such as H-L back transition during plasma current ramp-down. Recently, a relatively simple model of neutral dynamics was developed by us with TSC code to describe the plasma behavior during L-H and H-L transition phase. This model is compared with a JT-60U shot, in which it is possible to extract the effect of particle confinement change on neutral because H-mode discharge is switched on/off according to EC injection and thereby particle source density is kept constant during transition. It is shown that TSC simulation can account the behavior of neutral inferred from the experimental D$$_alpha$$ signal. It is concluded that this model is applicable to scenario development of the ITER.

TSC simulation of ITER plasma termination scenario with stable H-L mode transition and avoidance of radiation collapse

The ITER termination scenario from 15 MA to 1.5 MA (500 s $$<$$ t $$leq$$ 700 s) was reviewed by self-consistent simulations with the TSC code, comprised of newly developed D-T fuelling and pumping-out system. At 600 s, when the plasma current decreased to 10 MA, auxiliary NB heating was switched off to cease fusion $$alpha$$-heating. Simultaneously, the energy confinement switches H to L mode by intentionally removing the H mode pedestal of edge transport barrier. The H to L mode transition dynamics, ${it e.g.}$ reduction in the plasma density while building-up of in-vessel neutral gas, disappearance of the edge BS current and consequent jump in the internal inductance $$l_i(3)$$, were investigated to assess performance of the ITER pump-out system. It was newly shown that the forced H to L mode transition may trigger a radiation collapse, consequently terminating the discharge. It was also demonstrated that EC heating with 170 GHz O-mode wave after the H to L mode transition provides an effective control means to hedge risk of the radiation collapse.

Prediction of major disruptions in tokamak plasmas, analyses of time series data

This paper reviews recent research activities on the prediction of major disruptions observed in tokamak plasmas using neural networks. Disruptions caused by the density limit, the impurity injection, and the external error magnetic field, are driven by the plasma current and can be predicted from their precursors with a prediction success rate of nearly 100%. Disruptions driven by the increase in the plasma pressure has been predicted with a prediction success rate of about 90% evaluating the closeness to the operational limit by neural networks.

Neural-net predictor for beta limit disruptions in JT-60U

Prediction of major disruptions observed at the $$beta$$-limit for tokamak plasmas has been investigated in JT-60U with developing neural networks. A sub-neural network is trained to output a value of the $$beta$$$$_{N}$$ limit every 2 ms. The target $$beta$$$$_{N}$$ limit is artificially set by the operator in the first step training and is modified in the second step training using the output $$beta$$$$_{N}$$ limit from the trained network. To improve the prediction performance further, the difference between the estimated $$beta$$$$_{N}$$ limit and the measured $$beta$$$$_{N}$$ and the other 11 parameters are inputted to a main neural network to calculate the stability level. Major disruptions have been predicted with a prediction success rate of 80% at 10 ms prior to the disruption while the false alarm rate is lower than 4%. This 80% is much higher than about 10% previously obtained. A prediction success rate of 90% has been also obtained with a false alarm rate of 12% at 10 ms prior to the disruption. This 12% is about a half of previously obtained one.

In the previous works we had shown that injecting a mixture of large amounts of hydrogen and small amounts of argon can terminate a tokamak discharge quickly with avoiding runaway electron generation. In this work we have done the same experiments but with different gases in addition to argon. In fact we compared the effect of the puffing of argon, krypton, and xenon gases with and without simultaneous hydrogen gas puffing on disruption mitigation. We observed that injecting all impurities in the form of an admixture in hydrogen lead to faster plasma shutdowns with less runaway electron generation. We also found that injecting krypton gas (with or without hydrogen) seems to be a good candidate for plasma shutdown purposes since it induces low heat flux to divertor plates and avoids runaway electron generation more effectively.

We examine plasma behaviours during plasma disruptions in detail in JT-60U and other tokamaks to derive appropriate physics guidelines for the behaviours. Their interpretations and their extrapolations to ITER are incorporated into the DINA code, which solves plasma transport and 2D free boundary plasma equilibrium simultaneously with circuit equations for the vacuum vessel and the PF coils. Sensitivity of the plasma behaviours and their impact on the EM force during disruptions due to the range of variation and uncertainty of the experimental data are examined.

Wave form of current quench during disruptions in Tokamaks

The time dependence of the current decay during the current quench phase of disruptions, which can significantly influence the electro-magnetic force on the in-vessel components due to the induced eddy currents, is investigated using data obtained in JT-60U experiments in order to derive a relevant physics guideline for the predictive simulations of disruptions in ITER. It is shown that an exponential decay can fit the time dependence of current quench for discharges with large quench rate (fast current quench). On the other hand, for discharges with smaller quench rate (slow current quench), a linear decay can fit the time dependence of current quench better than exponential.

With the main aim of providing physics basis for ITER and the steady-state tokamak reactors, JT-60/JT-60U has been developing and optimizing the operational concepts, and extending the discharge regimes toward sustainment of high integrated performance in the reactor relevant parameter regime. In addition to achievement of the equivalent break-even condition (QDTeq up to 1.25) and a high fusion triple product = 1.5E21 m-3skeV, JT-60U has demonstrated the integrated performance of high confinement, high beta-N, full non-inductive current drive with a large fraction of bootstrap current in the reversed magnetic shear and in the high-beta-p ELMy H mode plasmas characterized by both internal and edge transport barriers. The key factors in optimizing these plasmas are profile and shape controls. As represented by discovery of various Internal Transport Barriers, JT-60/JT-60U has been emphasizing freedom and restriction of profiles in various confinement modes. JT-60U has demonstrated applicability of these high confinement modes to ITER and also clarified remaining issues.
