This article reports overview of various hydrogen production process which utilize heat supplied by the high temperature gas cooled reactors. Brief description for the thermochemical water splitting IS process, the hybrid-sulfur process, UT-3 process, the methane steam reforming process and the high temperature steam electrolysis were summarized. Research trends and a framework of international corporation in this field were introduced.

Heat transfer characteristics near the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of natural convection of horizontal anisotropic porous fluid layer heated from below with thin cylindrical rods inserted with high porosity above 0.822 to unity were studied by an analysis and an experiment. The critical Rayleigh number and dependence of Nusselt number on the Rayleigh number were analysed by linear stability theory and series expansion method on the basis of Darcy flow assumption. Critical Rayleigh number, increased with decrease in the porosity, was higher for the experiment than for the analysis but the difference was decreased with decrease in Darcy number. Experimental Nusselt number was considerably decreased with decrease in the porosity near unity although is rather same as the case of Benard convection without cylindrical rods. The experimental Nusselt number can be expressed by one correlation curve when Nusselt number is plotted against Darcy number of the present experiment was rather large to satisfy Darcy flow assumption. Experiment shows that Darcy flow assumption will be satisfied for Darcy number.

This paper deals with a computer simulation of a helium-air counter flow in a rectangular channel. The inclination angle is varied from 0(horizontal) to 90(vertical). Velocity profiles and concentration profiles are calculated with a computer program VSOP sub-module. Following main features of the counter flow are discussed. (1) Time required to establish a quasi-steady state counter flow. (2) The relationship between the inclination angle and the flow patterns of the counter flow (3) The developing process of velocity profiles and concentration profiles (4) The relationship between the inclination angle of the channel and the velocity profiles of upwards flow and the downwards flow (5) The relationship between the concentration profile and the inclination angle (6) The relationship between the net in-flow rate and the inclination angle We compared the computed velocity profile and the net in-flow rate with experimental data. A good agreement is obtained between the calculation and the experiment.

The attractive concepts for Sodium-, lead-bismuth-, helium- and water-cooled FBRs have been created through using typical plant features and employing advanced technologies. Efforts on evaluating technological prospects of feasibility have been paid for these concepts. Also, it was comfirmed if these concepts satisfy design requierments of capability and performance presumed in the feasibilty study on commertialization of Fast Breeder Reactor Systems. As results, it was concluded that the selection of sodium-cooled reactor was most rational for practical use of FBR technologies in 2015.
