The fractures in the rock are the main pass of groundwater flow and solute transport. The filling of fine-grained particle, such as clay minerals, was confirmed to decrease the permeability of rock by laboratory experiment. This research aimed to verify the occurance of the phoenomena in the fild. The water containing the clay minerals was injected into the rock at the 200m stage of the Mizunami undearground research laboratory. The hydraulic conductivity decreased two order before and after the injection. This result suggested that the decrease of hydraulic conductivity by the filling of fine-grained particle in the fractures occured in the real field.

The electro-chemical doping of Li into YbFeO was examined on the cell type sample similar to the Li-ion secondary battery cell. Systematic change of the lattice constant, Fe-Fe and Fe-Yb distance were observed with Li doping. Maximum value of the doping was over 300 mAh/g. An EXAFS experiment indicated that Li positioned between Yb octahedron layer (U-layer) and Fe-bipyramidal layer (W-layer). However, detailed change of iron valence state of YbFeO was not clearly observed because of the superimpose of the signal from iron metal nano particles in XANES observation. The results indicate that the electrochemical method might be one of the potential technique to control the frustration of charges in YbFeO.

Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

After the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) Accident in March 2011, the increase was significantly observed in a part of the result of the environmental radiation monitoring in Ibaraki prefecture. "The review meeting of the environmental effect from 1F accident" was established to discuss technically the fluctuation of monitoring data. The review meeting collected the monitoring data from the four nuclear operators, and discussed a fluctuating trend, Cs/Cs activity ratio, and so on. In this report, the results of the dose rate and Cs in fallout, surface soil, flatfish and seabed sediment are introduced. Also the problem solving in the review meeting is introduced.

The sum of spectroscopic factors of orbital is found to be 1.0 0.3. The result shows that the O core of F nucleus significantly differs from a free O nucleus, and the core consists of 35% O, and 65% excited O. The result shows that the O core of F nucleus significantly differs from a free O nucleus. The result may infer that the addition of the proton considerably changes the neutron structure in F from that in O, which could be a possible mechanism responsible for the oxygen dripline anomaly.

Acoustic emissions (AEs) monitored with 16 sensors in four boreholes located 1 m away from the HF hole exhibited two-dimensional distributions, which likely delineate a crack induced by the fracturing. Expansions of the regions in which AEs occurred were observed only immediately after the first and second BDs. Many AE events in other periods were distributed within the regions where AE events had already occurred. The initial motion polarities of P-waves indicate that tensile-dominant AE events occurred when the regions expanded and they were distributed primarily on the frontiers of the regions where AE events had already occurred. The experimental results suggest that increasing the injection flow rate is effective for generating new cracks in the refracturing, with the new crack expansions being induced by tensile fracturing.

In this study, MSWI fly ash was sampled in Fukushima Prefecture, and the physicochemical properties of radioactive cesium in MSWI fly ash were evaluated by particle size classification and the Japanese leaching test No. 13 (JLT-13). The results obtained from the classification of fly ash indicated that the activity concentration of radioactive cesium and the content of the coexisting matter (i.e., chloride, potassium, and sylvite) temporarily change in response to the particle size of fly ash. X-ray diffraction results indicated that water-soluble radioactive cesium exists as CsCl because of the cooling process and that insoluble cesium is bound to the inner sphere of amorphous matter.

The mechanism is discussed on the basis of the structure from short to long ranges determined by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and the lattice dynamics probed by Raman spectroscopy. Using a combination of experimental results and first-principles calculations, we explain the phase transition. Ti vibration of TiO octahedral units is frozen in the ferroelectric phase and the space group changes from nonpolar to polar .

Reactivity of edaravone (3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one), which is known to show high antioxidative properties, with oxidative species, such as hydroxyl radical (OH) and azide radical (N), was investigated by a pulse radiolysis experiment, and generation behavior of edaravone radicals produced through these reactions were observed. It was shown that OH-adducts are produced by the reaction with OH in contrast to the other oxidative radicals, which react with edaravone by an electron transfer reaction. Chemical repair properties of edaravone against DNA lesions produced by reactions of DNA with oxidative species were also investigated by a pulse radiolysis experiment with deoxyguanosine monophosphate (dGMP) and a -radiolysis experiment with plasmid DNA solutions. It was observed that edaravone reduced dGMP radicals just after produced in a dilute aqueous solution and inhibited some base lesions on plasmid DNA more effectively than single strand breaks. These results show that edaravone may protect living system from oxidative stress, such as radiation, by not only scavenging oxidative species but also reducing precursors of DNA leisons.

The mechanical properties and microstructure of the resulting welds were systematically examined, which revealed that FSW produces a defect-free stir zone in which material intermixing is notably absent. That is, both steels are separately distributed along a zigzagging interface in the stir zone when PNC-FMS is placed on the retreating side, with the tool plunging at the butt line. This interface did not act as a fracture site during small-sized tensile testing of the stir zone. Furthermore, the microstructure of the stir zone was refined in both the PNC-FMS and 316 stainless steel sides, resulting in improved mechanical properties over the respective base material regions.

As a part of the nuclear fuel cycle in Japan, the mixed oxide (MOX) fuels are produced through the microwave heating of the Pu/U mixed nitrate solution obtained from spent fuels. This paper investigated the electric power absorption of the solid Pu/U mixed nitrate medium in a cylindrical oven cavity and the effect of the input polarized waves. The numerical simulations have revealed that the incidence of the circularly polarized wave improves the uniformity of the absorbed power of the medium placed in the cylindrical cavity.

Moreover, SLB and analogues have been determined to fast repair DNA bases from oxidative damage by pulse radiolysis techniques. The present study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of SLB and analogues on soft X-ray-induced damage to plasmid DNA in vitro. Among the compounds tested, HESP and SLB were the most effective in preventing X-ray-induced formation of DNA single-strand breaks (SSB). A comparison of these results with other experiments showed that the ability of SLB and analogues to inhibit DNA damage in vitro correlated with the ability of the compounds to scavenge free radicals. Our work revealed that natural flavonoids, SLB and analogues may be used as potent protectors against radiation damage.
