A 325 MHz superconducting spoke cavity for the electron acceleration is under development to realize a compact industrial-use X-ray source with the laser-Compton scattering. Optimum designs of the spoke cavity have been searched by using the genetic algorithm, and multipactor simulations are currently in progress to finalize the detailed design. In parallel to the design-optimization efforts, studies toward fabrication processes are also being carried out. In this paper, progresses made so far and a current situation are briefly reviewed.

We have launched a 5-year research program to develop superconducting spoke cavity for laser Compton scattered (LCS) photon sources. For realizing a wide use of LCS X-ray and -ray sources in academic and industrial applications, we adopt 325-MHz super-conducting spoke cavity to electron beam drivers. The spoke cavity, originally invented for ion and proton acceleration, can be used for electron accelerators, in which we can make best use of features of spoke cavity: relative compactness in comparison with a TM cavity of the same frequency, robustness with respect to manufacturing inaccuracy due to its strong cell-to-cell coupling, couplers on outer conductor for the better packing in a linac, and so on. In this paper, we present our research plan and results of cavity shape optimization.

Superconducting spoke cavities for laser Compton scattered (LCS) photon sources is under development. The operating frequency is 325-MHz to accelerate electron beam for the LCS sources, where the size of the spoke cavity is less than an elliptical cavities with the same frequency. Because of the complicated shape of the cavity, it may be suffered from a strong multipactor effect. Some trial of multipactor analysis is described.

Innovative use of modern diagnostics has revealed the existence of zonal flows, their spatio-temporal characteristics, their relationship with turbulence, and their effects on confinement. Particularly a number of observations have been accumulated on the oscillatory branch of the zonal flow, dubbed as geodesic acoustic modes suggesting necessity of theories to give their proper description. Several new methods have elucidated the zonal flow generation processes from the turbulence. Further investigation of relationship between the zonal flows and confinement is strongly encouraged as cross-device activity.

Present status of experiments on zonal flows is overviewed. TRU waste should be isolated from biosphere for a long period of time as it includes long lived nuclides. In this study, (1) data were conected on the mechanical properties of engineered barrier materials, (2) affection on the mechanical properties of Na bentonito by salt water was studied and (3) soundness of the disposal system against changes in the volume of engineered banier was evaluated, to examine critical events related to the long-term soundness of the disposal system. Described below are the results of the studies. (1) The swelling pressure, swelling amount and permeability were obtained for a material consisting of NaCa-exchanged bentonito and silica sand with a relative weight of 30% (with a dry density of 1.6 Mgm) by supplying saturated calcium hydroxide aqeous solution. As a result, it was confirmed that the swelling pressure and permeability were approximately estimated from the relation between these properties and the effective dry density of bentonito. (2) The swelling pressure, swelling amount and permeability were obtained for a material consisting of salty Na bentonito and silica sand with a relative weight of 30% (with a dry density of 1.6 Mgm) by supplying artifical salt water. As a result, it was confirmed that these properties were approximately these properties of NaCa-bentonito. (3) Tests were conducted as a part of the evaluation of system soundness against changes in the volume of engineered barrier. Development of a void around bentonito was assumed. Self sealing of Na and NaCa-exchanged bentonito, and theirs water cut-off capability and swelling pressure were investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the change of permeability and swelling pressure under self sealing of bentonito. Based on the test results (i.e. the both relations between the swelling pressure and dry density, and the permeability and dry density), soundness of the system was verified against changes of the volume of engineered barrier materials.

We have launched a 5-year research program to develop superconducting spoke cavity for laser Compton scattered (LCS) photon sources combined with an energy-recovery linac and a laser. For realizing a wide use of LCS X-ray and -ray sources in academic and industrial applications, we adopt a 325-MHz superconducting spoke cavity to electron beam drivers. The spoke cavity has advantages over the elliptical cavity to adopt for our proposing system. Design optimization calculation of the spoke cavity shape is being carried out using 3D electro-magnetic field simulation code with multi-objective genetic algorithm. Current progress of mechanical and fabrication design will be also presented.

High level radioactive waste contains a relatively large amount of MoO. Mo is known to be a difficult element to incorporate in nuclear waste glass such as borosilicate glasses. On the other hand, phosphate glasses is able to contain MoO over a wide and continuous compositional range. In this study, the effect of MoO addition on properties of iron phosphate glass is studied. The glass transition temperature was evaluated. The immersion tests were performed according to MCC-2 test method due to evaluate the water durability. The additional effects of MoO are discussed in terms of glass structure.
