Identical profiles for the electron density, electron temperature, and ion temperature were obtained for hydrogen and deuterium plasmas, whereas the required power clearly increased for hydrogen, which resulted in reduction of heat diffusivity for deuterium. The inverse of the ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) scale length which is required for a given ion heat diffusivity increased by a factor of approximately 1.2 for deuterium compared with that for hydrogen.

Dependence of heat transport on isotopic composition is investigated in conventional H-mode plasmas for the application to ITER. The identical profiles of , and are obtained for hydrogen and deuterium plasmas while the required power becomes clearly larger for hydrogen, resulting in the reduction of the heat diffusivity for deuterium. The result of the identical temperature profiles in spite of different heating power suggests that the characteristics of heat conduction differs essentially between hydrogen and deuterium even at the same scale length of temperature gradient. On the other hand, the edge stability is improved by increased total regardless of the difference of the isotropic composition.

Energy confinement properties for hydrogen and deuterium H-mode plasmas were examined in JT-60U. The energy confinement time became larger by a factor of 1.2-1.3 for deuterium than for hydrogen at a given . When the plasma energy was fixed, the profiles of density and temperature became identical for both cases while higher heating power was required for hydrogen. The ion conductive heat flux for hydrogen became approximately two times that for deuterium. Hence, the ion heat diffusivity for hydrogen was higher than for deuterium. It was found that the ion-temperature-gradient scale length became smaller by a factor of 1.2 for deuterium than for hydrogen.

The volume reduction treatment of solid waste system by ultra-high frequency induction furnace (UHFIF) was developed from FY2005 to FY2007. Basic data for melting performance were collected by non-radioactive experiments using the bench scale UHFIF with a crucible capacity of 10 liters. Based on the obtained data, engineering specifications were evaluated for a demonstration scale UHFIF with a crucible capacity of 30 liters. A new demonstration scale UHFIF was constructed and melting experiments of surrogate wastes were carried out by this furnace. It was confirmed that the demonstration scale UHFIF can melt ferrous metal, ceramics and aluminum all together and stabilize aluminum by oxidation to alumina. Density, chemical composition, and surface condition of the solidified substances were analyzed, and homogeneity of the solidified substances was confirmed. Melting behavior in the demonstration scale UHFIF was analyzed by computer simulation and simulation results agreed well with the experimental ones. From the design study for a full scale UHFIF with a crucible capacity of 100 liters, basic specifications were evaluated for the full scale UHFIF. Based on the obtained specification, melting behavior in the full scale UHFIF was analyzed by computer simulation.

Upper and lower divertors with different geometry are prepared for flexibility of plasma shape control. The beam lines of negative-ion NBI are shifted downward for off-axis current drive, in order to obtain a weak/reversed shear plasma. The feedback control coils along the port hole in the stabilizing plate are found effective to suppress the resistive wall mode (RWM) and sustain high close to the ideal wall limit. The regime of full current drive operation has been extended with upgraded heating and current drive power. Full current drive operation for 100 s with reactor-relevant high values of normalized beta and bootstrap current fraction ( = 2.4 MA, = 4.4, = 0.70, / = 0.86, H = 1.3) is expected in a highly-shaped low-aspect-ratio configuration ( = 2.65). High , high-density ELMy H-mode is also expected.

After the discussions in JA-EU Satellite Tokamak Working Group in 2005, the heating power is increased up to 41MW, 100s to ensure the ITER support research. With such increased heating power, the prospective plasma performances are analysed by the equilibrium and transport analysis codes. Operation window of a fully non-inductive current drive is extended to high density region. Simultaneous achievement of high equivalent Q and high normalised beta is also expected in wide operational margin. Those prospects strongly indicate that JT-60SA is suitable machine to conduct the advanced research orienting to ITER and DEMO.

Divertor design for the JT-60 SA has been progressing in order to handle large heat flux during full pulse duration of 100 s. Divertor should be suitable for single null plasma experiments with the full power injection of 41 MW. The simulation results using 2D fluid (plasma) and Monte-Carlo (neutral) code are summarized. Lower single-null divertor is designed for ITER-like plasma configuration in order to study physics concept of the ITER divertor: control of the plasma detachment. Simulation results for various divertor geometries showed that the vertical target with V-shaped corner can produce plasma detachment near the outer strike-point for medium edge plasma density. It was also demonstrated that the divertor plasma became attached to move the outer strike point above the V-corner, suggesting that recover from sever detachment can be achieved by changing the plasma location. USN divertor will be designed for high- plasma experiments with the highest shaping plasma of S=6.

The machine design is carried out to investigate the capability for the flexibility in aspect ratio and shape controllability for the demonstration of the high-beta steady state operation with nation-wide collaboration, in parallel with ITER towards DEMO. Two designs are proposed and assessed with respect to the physics requirements such as confinement, stability, current drive, divertor, and energetic particle confinement. The operation range in the aspect ratio and the plasma shape is widely enhanced in consistent with the sufficient divertor pumping. Evaluations of the plasma performance towards the determination of machine design are presented.

Until 1995, it is experimentally confirmed that parallel transport of tokamak follows prediction of neoclassical theory (Kikuchi, Azumi, PPCF review). But it relies on gloval parameter. Since then, local measurement of bootstrap current density or electrical conductivity becomes possible by the development of new plasma diagnostics technique. In this paper, method of comparison of current profile evaluation and its application to electrical conductivity and bootstrap current density is reported.

Times Cited Count:10 Percentile:15.15(Nuclear Science & Technology)Studies on non-inductive current drive and development of an integrated steady-state high performance operation in JT-60 are reviewed. Experiments on lower hybrid current drive in JT-60 haven shown a large non-inductive current up to 3.5MA, high current drive efficiency of 3.6x1019m-2A/W. Basic studies on LH waves in JT-60 have contributed to understand current drive physics. Significant progress in neutral beam current drive has been made in JT-60 by testing the performance of negative ion based NBI (N-NBI). The CD efficiency of ~1.5x1019m-2A /W, and N-NB driven current of ~1MA have been demonstrated in N-NBCD. Strongly localized driven current by electron cyclotron current drive was identified with a fundamental O-mode scheme. Efficiency of 0.5x1019m-2A/W and EC driven current of 0.2MA were achieved and suppression of neo-classical tearing mode was demonstrated. Based on these developments, two integrated steady-state operation scenarios were developed in JT-60, which are reversed magnetic shear (R/S) plasmas and high bp ELMy H-mode. In these operation regimes, discharges have been sustained near the steady-state current profile under full non-inductive current drive. High performance plasmas with a high nDotETio and at high normalized density were also produced under fully non-inductive condition in high bp ELMy H-mode and R/S mode.
