The expression "The fusion reacctor is the sun on the earth," is often used to introduce research and development of fusion reactors. This document was prepared so as to explain the reason why it is so called to the students at the 3rd grade of junior high schools and at high schools. This document was made according to a request by the publication office of the technical internet journal "Superconductivity Web 21" which is published by the International Superconductivity Technology Center.

The cool down of CS model coil and NbAl insert was started on March 4, 2002. It took almost one month and immediately started coil charge since April 3, 2002. The charge test of NbAl insert and CS model coil was completed on May 2, 2002. All of the experiments including the warm up was also completed on May 30, 2002.In this campaign, total shot numbers were 102 and the size of the data file in the DAS (Data Acquisition System) was about 5.2 GB. This report is a database that consists of the log list and the log sheets of every shot.

The critical current performances of the NbAl conductors were studied to verify that the conductor achieves the expected performance and 0.4% bending strain does not originate degradation. The critical currents were measured at the background magnetic fields of 7, 9, 10 and 11 T at the temperatures from 6 to 9 K. The expected critical currents is calculated using the developed model and the calculation results indicate that the experimental results showed good agreement with the expected critical currents. Accordingly, we can conclude that the fabrication process of this conductor was appropriate and the applicability of the react-and-wind technique was demonstrated.

The Central Solenoid (CS) model coil programme has been carrying out since 1992 as a back born project in International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Engineering Design Activity (EDA). The CS model coil programme has a plan to develop the toroidal fieled (TF) insert to demonstrate the conductor performance of ITER real TF coils under 13 T of magnetic flux density. The fabrication of TF insert was completed on May 2001 by D.V.Efremov Scientific Research Institute for Electrophysical Apparatus(Efremov institute) at St. Petersburg, Russia. Experiments including the cooldown and warmup were completed November 2001 at JAERI Naka. TF insert was achieved to charge up to 13T with 46kA without training under the back up magnetic field by the CS model coil.

New technologies have been produced through the development, fabrication and testing of scalable models in the fields of superconducting magnet, reactor structure with vacuum vessel, high-heat-flux plasma facing component, neutral beam injector, high-power mm-wave generator and so on. As major contributions from Japan, development and testing results of a 13-T, 640-MJ, NbSn pulsed magnet, a 18-degree sector of vacuum vessel with a height of 15 m and a width of 9 m, CFC armors to CuCrZr cooling tube that withstood 20 MW/m, a 31 mA/cm negative ion beam source, a 1-MeV beam-accelerator, a 1-MW 170-GHz gyrotron were described.

A tritium processing system for the ITER and DEMO reactors was designed and basic technologies for each component of this system was demonstrated successfully by an operation of the integrated system for one month. An ultra-violet laser with a wave length of 193 nm was found quite effective for removing tritium from in-vessel components of D-T fusion reactors. Blanket technologies have been developed for the Test Blanket Module of the ITER and for advanced blankets for DEMO reactors. This blanket is composed of LiTiO breeder pebbles and neutron multiplier Be pebbles, contained in a box structures made of a reduced activation ferritic steel F82H. Mechanical properties of F82H under neutron irradiation up to 50 dpa were obtained in a temperature range from 200 to 500C. Design of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) has been developed so as to obtain engineering data for candidate materials for DEMO reactors, under neutron irradiation up to 100-200 dpa.

One ton of mass-produced strands were successfully manufactured for the 13T-46kA NbAl insert which will be tested using the ITER Central Solenoid model coil. The critical current of the Nb3Al strand developed for the ITER project was measured in temperatures from 4.2 K to 15 K and in applied magnetic fields up to 16 T. An empirical equation for the critical current density was devised using these data and the pinning force scaling method. Good agreement between this equation and the measured data is obtained in the operating condition of the ITER machine. The equation is useful in evaluating the performance of the full-size conductor that consists of 1,152 strands and in establishing the optimum design criteria for the conductor in fusion machines.
