In this study, in order to obtain the fundamental information on aerosol transport behavior between cells, the Multiple cells with Expandable connecting pipe Test facility (MET) was manufactured and preliminary experiments were performed. In the preliminary experiments, simulated particles were used in a test system with two cells connected horizontally or vertically, and their transport behavior was measured. As a result, it was possible to confirm the behavior of the simulated particles transporting to the horizontal or vertical cells from the results such as images and sedimentation data.

High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors; JSME Series in Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation, Vol.5, 464 Pages, 2021/02
As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Compact neutron sources have been used as various diagnostics such as a neutron diffraction, neutron resonant analysis, and neutron radiography. The developments of the neutron detectors are essential for all of these applications, while the techniques are strongly dependent on the neutron energy and the aim of the measurement. This paper reviews neutron detection techniques pertinent to promote compact neutron source uses. Along with general neutron detection systems with conventional counters for slow neutrons, we have highlighted detectors for high energy neutrons with high time resolution and high sensitivity which could be applied in a laser-driven compact neutron source.

Proceedings of 2017 Water Reactor Fuel Performance Meeting (WRFPM 2017) (USB Flash Drive), 10 Pages, 2017/09
For improving the corrosion resistance of silicon carbide (SiC) in boiling-water-reactor environments, corrosion-resistant coatings on SiC were evaluated. Due to its hydrogen-generation rate and reaction heat being lower than those of conventional Zircaloy, SiC is expected to be an appropriate material for accident-tolerant fuels. However, there are still many critical issues with the practical application of SiC fuel cladding and fuel channel boxes, one of which is hydrothermal corrosion. Silicon carbide is chemically stable, but silicon oxide formed by oxidation of SiC dissolves in high temperature water. Although the rate of SiC dissolution is very small, the dissolution must be suppressed to comply with regulations for dissolved silica concentration in reactor coolant. In this study, the corrosion behavior of candidate coatings for SiC substrates were evaluated before and after exposure to unirradiated high-purity-water environments.

Since the system cannot have a sufficiently labyrinthine structure and the second mirrors are located nearly as close to the plasma as the first mirrors due to limited space, the nuclear heating rate of the second mirrors is as high as that of the first mirrors. However, it is possible to reduce the nuclear heating rates of the mirrors if the blanket shield module provides a sufficient degree of neutron shielding.

In particular, we show the result of the X-ray generation experiment and of the laser pulse compression for increasing the X-ray flux.

At the previous symposium in Advanced Photon Research, we proposed and demonstrated the laser pulse compression via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) for increasing the flux of the Compton backscattered X rays. After that, we improved the SBS pulse compression system by introducing the image relay in the laser transport line. As a result, we achieve the stably compressed laser pulse with a duration of 2.1 ns and with an energy of 0.84 J. By installing this system into the Compton backscattered X-ray source, the X-ray flux will be increased 3.2 times for the present system at the KPSI-JAEA.

It was found for the first time in the LHD-source 2, that both the amount of Cs I (neutral Cs) and Cs II (Cs) in the source plasma light rose sharply when beam acceleration began, and continued rising during a 10 s pulse. We think that this was because the cesium was evaporated/sputtered from the source backplate by the back-streaming positive ions.

In International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), measurement of velocity and spatial distributions of confined -particles requires temporal resolution of 0.1 s and spatial resolution of a/10, where a is plasma minor radius. A new laser system (Energy 10J, repetition 10Hz) has been developed based on a commercially available laser (Shibuya Kogyo Co., Ltd, SEL4000) to meet the requirement of temporal resolution of ITER and to improve a signal-to-noise ratio. The laser has unstable resonator with a cavity length of 4 m and discharge electrodes with heat exchanger of laser gas for high-repetition operation. Proof-of-principle test of the CTS technique will be performed with the new laser system on JT-60U (JAEA Tokamak 60 - Upgrade).
