In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

A superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter is an ideal X-ray detector for experiments at accelerator facilities because of good energy resolution and high efficiency. To study the performance of the TES detector with a high-intensity pulsed charged-particle beam, we measured X-ray spectra with a pulsed muon beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Japan. We found substantial temporal shifts of the X-ray energy correlated with the arrival time of the pulsed muon beam, which was reasonably explained by pulse pileup due to the incidence of energetic particles from the initial pulsed beam.

We observed electronic $$K$$X rays emitted from muonic iron atoms using a superconducting transition-edge-type sensor microcalorimeter. The energy resolution of 5.2 eV in FWHM allowed us to observe the asymmetric broad profile of the electronic characteristic $$K$$$$alpha$$ and $$K$$$$beta$$ X rays together with the hypersatellite $$K$$$$alpha$$ X rays around 6 keV. This signature reflects the time-dependent screening of the nuclear charge by the negative muon and the $$L$$-shell electrons, accompanied by electron side-feeding. Assisted by a simulation, this data clearly reveals the electronic $$K$$- and $$L$$-shell hole production and their temporal evolution during the muon cascade process.

The Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering Center of JAEA has been working together with local communities for more than 60 years. Through our R&D projects on from uranium exploration to uranium enrichment as a part of the nuclear fuel cycle (i.e., front-end), we have accumulated experiences in the fields of management of uranium related technology. Taking advantage of such our potential, we will start new R&D program on "Research on Uranium and the Environment". In December 2016 we announced our new concept of the "Uranium and Environmental Research Platform" as a framework aimed at contributing to regional and international society through R&D programs (environmental research and uranium waste engineering research) that are needed to steadily carry out decommissioning of uranium handling facilities.

The Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of stainless steel exposed to high temperature water containing hydrogen peroxide

Sato, Tomonori; Noda, Kazuhiko*; Kato, Chiaki; Yamamoto, Masahiro; Nakano, Junichi; Tsukada, Takashi

Proceedings of Symposium on Water Chemistry and Corrosion in Nuclear Power Plants in Asia 2009 (CD-ROM), p.232 - 237, 2009/10

In this work, to clarify the electrochemical behaviors at the surfaces of stainless steels (SSs) in high temperature water containing hydrogen peroxide (H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$), the in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of SSs exposed to high temperature water was carried out. The materials of test specimens were type 316L SS and type 304L SS. The range of the applied frequency in EIS was 100 kHz to 1 m or 10 mHz. The charge transfer resistance at the boundary between the oxide film and the base metal (R$$_{rm ct}$$) in oxygen (O$$_{2}$$) condition was larger than R$$_{rm ct}$$ in H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ condition. This indicates that the corrosion rate of type 316L SS in high temperature water containing H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ is larger than that in O$$_{2}$$ contained water. The R$$_{rm ct}$$ of type 316L SS was larger than that of type 304L SS in high temperature water containing H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$. This indicates that the corrosion resistance of type 316L SS is higher than that of type 304L SS.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

In this study, the laboratory mechanical tests of sedimentary soft rock sampled at HORONOBE area in HOKKAIDO prefecture were conducted in order to build the confidence of OKUBO model for long term deformation of sedimentary rock. And the stability of rock around tunnel in building under the condition assumed the underground of HORONOBE area was examined by numerical simulation using information of boring data obtained before 2002 year. As a result, authors could obtain many values of parameter in OKUBO model under various conditions. These conditions have the difference of temperature and water saturation. In addition, the life time in creep predicted by OKUBO model could be compared with the real one. And numerical simulations, assuming various conditions such as stiffness of buffer material and yielding of support, had been carried out to evaluate the long-term stability of rock surrounding buffer material. Results show the decreasing tendency of time dependency of rock.

no journal, ,

To evaluate the electrochemical properties of the corrosion and formed oxide film of the stainless steel exposed to high temperature water containing hydrogen peroxide, the change in the electrochemical impedance response with the formation of oxide film was measured in high temperature water. And the impedance response of stainless steel with oxide film was measured in room temperature. As a result, the two half circles are confirmed in the Nyquist diagram of the obtained impedance response. The lower frequency half circle changed with exposure time. It was confirmed that the resistance of 316L stainless steel against corrosion was higher than that of type 304L stainless steel by the evaluation of lower frequency half circles.

To evaluate the electrochemical properties of the corrosion and formed oxide film of the stainless steel exposed to high temperature water containing hydrogen peroxide, the change in the electrochemical impedance response with the formation of oxide film was measured in high temperature water. As a result, the two half circles are confirmed in the Nyquist diagram of the obtained impedance response. The radius of the lower frequency half circle decreased with exposure time just after the injection start and then increased to a constant value. The impedance with lower frequency might be determined by the coulomb transfer at the boundary between the oxide film and base metal. The result indicated that the corrosion reaction at the boundary between the oxide film and base metal accelerated by hydrogen peroxide just after injection start, and then the corrosion might be mitigated the formed oxide film.

Calculation of current-potential distribution for macro-cell corrosion using multipurpose application software

Yamamoto, Masahiro; Kato, Chiaki; Sugita, Kazumi*; Noda, Kazuhiko*

no journal, ,

Macro-cell current which was important factor for corrosion of actual structure was calculated by using multi-purpose FEM application software. In order to calculate electrochemical potential, polarization resistance of metal-water interface was defined as non-linear function. We applied the approximate function utilized of Batler-Volmer equation. The calculated results were very similar to model experimental results. This method is useful tool for calculation of macro-cell currents.

no journal, ,

In order to evaluate the corrosion behavior of stainless steel in high temperature water under irradiation condition, the change in the response of the impedance to the change in the corrosive condition was measured and the change in surface condition was also analyzed. As a result, it was indicated that the corrosion behavior through oxide film reached to a stable condition in the early exposure period in high temperature water with hydrogen peroxide.
