The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

For the safety design in which heat is properly removed from the molten fuel after the core disruptive accident in a sodium-cooled fast reactor, the estimation of the breakup behavior of molten fuel discharged into the coolant like a jet is desired. In order to investigate the influence of viscocity on the jet behavior, we simulated a jet discharged into a coolant using the three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model for two-phase fluid, and examined the influence of Ohnesorge number and Reynolds number on the jet behavior. As a result, we made clear that it is necessary to consider viscosity of the coolant as well as that of the jet for the estimation of jet behavior.

From the viewpoint of protecting containment and suppressing diffusion of the radioactive materials at severe accidents of nuclear power plant, it is important to install filtered venting devices to permit release of high pressure pollutant gas to the atmosphere by eliminating radioactive materials in the gas. A Multi Venturi Scrubber System (MVSS) is one of the devices for the filtered venting, and is used to realize filtered venting without any power supply. The MVSS is composed of a "Venturi Scrubbers" part and a "bubble column" part. In the Venturi Scrubbers part of the MVSS, there are hundreds of the Venturi scrubbers (VS). In an operation mode of the MVSS, the radioactive materials are eliminated through the gas-liquid interface from the pollutant gas to the liquid phase of a dispersed flow in the VS and a bubbly flow in the bubble column part. In the VS, the dispersed flow is formed from the liquid, which is suctioned through the hole for suction (called self-priming). In previous studies, an evaluation method to evaluate the liquid flow rate by the self-priming was developed. However, to develop evaluation methods of performance of the VSs, the two-phase flow behavior must be investigated, including droplet size and velocity difference of liquid and gas phases. Two-phase flow behavior in the VS is complicated, and it is difficult to estimate two-phase flow behavior of the VS by only experimental procedures. In this study, to investigate the hydraulic behavior of the VS, we tried to apply a detailed numerical simulation method of two-phase flow to the numerical simulation of the VS. In the simulation, TPFIT developed in JAEA was used as the detailed numerical simulation method. In this paper, we performed the numerical simulation air-water two-phase flow in the of the lab scale VS by the TPFIT, and numerical results were compared with experimental results.

In this study, Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (U-RANS) approach with the Reynolds Stress Model using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code has been applied to the flow through single and double short-elbows under a high Reynolds number condition (1.010). This numerical simulation has utilized a 1/7 scaled water experiment simulating the JSFR cold-leg piping in order to investigate the flow pattern in a three-dimensionally connected double elbow. As a result, validity and applicability of the U-RANS numerical simulation method were confirmed by comparison between the numerical and experimental results. The simulation has also shown that unsteady flow fields including vortex structures in the 1st elbow were very different from that in the 2nd elbow. This is because horseshoe vortexes generated in the 1st elbow downstream enter sideways the 2nd elbow. In addition, the simulation has indicated that the influence of distance between two elbows in the double elbow flow addressed in this paper was small.

The development of flow-induced vibration evaluation methodology has reached a milestone that separate-effect experimental data under a high Reynolds number regime including swirl and deflected inflow conditions are available for the validation of the methodology. On the other hand, technical standards are desirable to be documented for designers of sodium-cooled fast reactors. From such a background, the documentation of a flow-induced vibration design guideline has been made for the hot-leg piping of Japan sodium-cooled fast reactor. This paper describes the design guideline of the flow-induced vibration evaluation methodology, which has been informed from main separate-effect experiments, as well as supplemental interpretation for the guideline.

In this study, the characteristics of pressure fluctuation in a dual elbow piping simulating the cold-leg piping of the JSFR was elucidated by conducting a pressure measurement test using a scale model. As a result of the experiment, it was clarified that the pressure fluctuation characteristics of the dual elbow flow was very similar to that of the single elbow flow in and near the first elbow.

The present methodology was applied to the analysis for the 1/3-scale experiment of the hot-leg pipe of JSFR, and the predicted stress values were compared with the measured stress values. The predicted stress values were underestimated in the case of using the intact pressure fluctuations obtained by the unsteady fluid flow analysis. Therefore, the improvement of the prediction accuracy of the pressure fluctuations on the pipe wall was attempted.

Flow visualization experiment with 2D-PIV in a dual elbow system simulating the cold-leg piping of the JSFR was performed varying Reynolds number from 0.310 to 1.010. The tested piping has two short elbows which are three-dimensionally connected with a straight pipe. In the dual elbow system, separation vortices are shed from the separated region like a single elbow one. These vortices flow by the inrados of the second elbow and its lower stream. The post-critical regime of the dual elbow flow appears when Reynolds number is larger than about 0.510, as with the single elbow system.

The anion-exchangechromatographic behavior of Rf was investigated in 1.9-13.9 M hydrofluoric acid together with those of the group-4 elements Zr and Hf produced in the O-induced reactions on Ge and Gd targets, respectively. It was found that the adsorption behavior of Rf on anion-exchange resin is quite different from those of Zr and Hf, suggesting the influence of relativistic effect on the fluoride complexation of Rf.

One of the experimental facilities in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), where high-intensity neutron beams and muon beams are used as powerful probes for materials science, life science and related engineering. The neutrons and muons are generated with high-intensity proton beam from 3-GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). The high-intensity proton beam has to be effectively transported, and a neutron production target and a muon production target have to be also properly irradiated. The principal design of the 3-GeV proton beam transport facility (3NBT) is systematized.

We have investigated the sorption behavior of element 104 rutherfordium (Rf) on an anion exchange resin from HCl and HNO solutions. In the HCl experiments, the distribution coefficients of Rf increase with an increase of HCl concentration from 7.0 M to 11.5 M, indicating that anionic species such as [Rf(OH)Cl] or [RfCl] are formed. This sorption behavior of Rf is typical of the group-4 elements Zr and Hf, and is quite different from that of the pseudo-homologue Th. It is also noted that the distribution coefficients decrease in the order Rf, Zr, Hf at 9.0 M HCl, which is consistent with the expected order of ionic radii. On the other hand, Rf appears to behave like Zr and Hf in 8 M HNO not like Pu and Th.
