Quantum Beam Science (Internet), 1(3), p.9_1 - 9_59, 2017/12

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

One of the experimental facilities in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), where high-intensity neutron beams and muon beams are used as powerful probes for materials science, life science and related engineering. The neutrons and muons are generated with high-intensity proton beam from 3-GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). The high-intensity proton beam has to be effectively transported, and a neutron production target and a muon production target have to be also properly irradiated. The principal design of the 3-GeV proton beam transport facility (3NBT) is systematized.

Design concept of high-intensity total diffractometer of J-PARC is wide-Q range measurements with the highest neutron intensity by the pulsed neutron source. The resolution of the diffractometer is reasonable for crystalline materials and the diffractometer will cover very wide research fields in term nano structure and/or non-crystalline materials. Hydrogen absorption mechanism will be intensively investigated with the diffractometer.

NOVA has almost 900 3-helium gas detectors for neutron diffraction measurements. Two Gas Electron Multiplier (GEMs) are installed as an incident-neutron and a transmission beam monitors. The performance of NOVA has been confirmed by several samples: structural analysis of crystalline and amorphous samples are demonstrated, the instrument background is low enough to measure S(Q) with the order of several ten mg for an hour. Typical S(Q) of silica glass (cylindrical rod, 20 mm long, and 7 mm diameter) is obtained up to 15 (1/${AA}$) for 1 sec and up to 35 (1/${AA}$) for 20 sec. These results show that NOVA is a powerful instrument for in situ dynamic investigation of rapid structural transformation in supercooled liquids and in hydrogen storage materials. Some of recent results of disordered materials on NOVA will be presented.

2D neutron diffraction imaging of an ammonite fossil was carried out at high-intensity total diffractometer NOVA in J-PARC. Observed diffraction profiles consist of calcite, siderite and amorphous structures. Most of part in the ammonite is calcite. The calcite image shows air chambers divided by septa in the spiral shell. Siderite is observed only in the body chamber. Amorphous structure is observed in both the protoconch and the inner whorls.

Neutron diffraction imaging for a SUS430 plate embedded in a copper block sample has been tested at the high-intensity total diffractometer NOVA in J-PARC, the High-Resolution Powder Diffractometer HRPD and the diffractometer for Residual Stress Analysis RESA in JRR-3. The results are also compared with that measured at the Thermal Neutron Radiography Facility TNRF in JRR-3.
