Oxygen reduction activity and interfacial structures of La$$_{0.8}$$Sr$$_{0.2}$$CoO$$_{3}$$ at initial electrochemical process in an alkaline solution

Oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) of perovskite-type La$$_{0.8}$$Sr$$_{0.2}$$CoO$$_{3}$$ were characterized using two-dimensional model electrodes with different reaction planes. Synthesized by pulsed laser deposition, these thin and flat electrodes can reveal the reaction plane dependence of the ORR activity. From steady-state polarization measurements in KOH (aq.), the ORR activity was the highest on the (001) film during the first ORR/OER cycle, and it decreased significantly during the second cycle. In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction clarified crystal structure changes in the bulk and surface regions of La$$_{0.8}$$Sr$$_{0.2}$$CoO$$_{3}$$, and these changes are associated with forming oxygen defects during the initial electrochemical process. Furthermore, the La$$_{0.8}$$Sr$$_{0.2}$$CoO$$_{3}$$ surface partially decomposed upon reacting. Therefore, the interfacial structures formed in the electrochemical reaction field is important for enhancing ORR and OER activities.

In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

During core-disruptive accidents in sodium-cooled fast reactors, the sedimentation behavior of fragmented debris is crucial for in-vessel retention. The height of the beds formed may influence both the cooling of the bed and the neutronic characteristics. To develop an experimental database of bed formation behavior, a series of experiments using simulant materials, namely, Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, ZrO$$_{2}$$, and stainless steel, were performed under gravity-driven discharge of solid particles from a nozzle into a quiescent cylindrical water pool. The bed height was measured for particles of different size, density, and sphericity, and an injection nozzle with varying diameter, injection velocity, and injection height. From these experiments, an empirical correlation was established to predict the bed height for both homogeneous and mixed particles for the different properties. This correlation reproduces reasonably well the experimental trend in bed height.

During the material relocation phase of core disruptive accidents in sodium-cooled fast reactors, the sedimentation behavior of fragmented debris leading to the formation of debris beds is crucial for in-vessel retention by debris bed cooling. In this study, a series of experiments using simulant materials was performed to develop an experimental database of bed formation behavior by gravity driven discharge of solid particles from a nozzle into a quiescent cylindrical water pool. The bed height as well as the bed shape was measured. Three types of spherical and non-spherical particles, namely Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, ZrO$$_{2}$$ and stainless steel with different size were employed to study the effect of key experimental parameter on debris bed mound shape. Based on the experimental results, an empirical correlation as experimental database was proposed to predict the particle bed height. The proposed correlation reasonably reproduces the experimental trend of the bed height variation on the crucial factors. This result demonstrates a wide applicability of the proposed empirical model to predict the bed height in terms of all crucial factors with reasonable accuracy.

This paper reports an experimental evaluation on debris bed formation characteristics in core-disruptive accidents cogitating the heterogeneous mixture of particles. In the present study, to appraise the characteristics, a series of experiments was accomplished by gravity driven discharge of solid binary mixtures of particles as simulant debris from a nozzle into a quiescent water pool in isothermal condition at room temperature. Currently, two types of spherical particles, namely Alumina and stainless steel with different diameter are employed to study the effect of key experimental parameters on bed mound shape. In experimental investigation both convex and concave mound shapes were perceived based on the effect of particle size and nozzle diameter. The present outcomes could be useful to validate numerical models and simulation codes of particulate debris sedimentation.

The in-vessel retention (IVR) of core disruptive accident (CDA) is of prime importance in enhancing safety characteristics of sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). In the CDA of SFRs, molten core material relocates to the lower plenum of reactor vessel and may impose significant thermal load on the structures, resulting in the melt through of the reactor vessel. In order to enable the assessment of this relocation process and prove that IVR of core material is the most probable consequence of the CDA in SFRs, a research program to develop the evaluation methodology for the material relocation behavior in the CDA of SFRs has been conducted. This program consists of three developmental studies, namely the development of the analysis method of molten material discharge from the core region, the development of evaluation methodology of molten material penetration into sodium pool, and the development of the simulation tool of debris bed behavior.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

A neutron-sensitive ZnS/$$^{10}$$B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ ceramic scintillator detector was developed as an alternative to a $$^{3}$$He-gas-based detector for use in a plutonium canister assay system. The detector has a modular structure, with a flat ZnS/$$^{10}$$B$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ceramic scintillator strip that is installed diagonally inside a light-reflecting aluminium case with a square cross section. The prototype detectors, which have a neutron-sensitive area of 30 mm $$times$$ 250 mm, exhibited a sensitivity of 21.7-23.4 $$pm$$ 0.1 cps$$/$$nv for thermal neutrons, a $$^{137}$$Cs $$gamma$$-ray sensitivity of 1.1-1.9 $$pm $$0.2 $$times$$ 10$$^{-7}$$ and a count variation of less than 6% over the detector length. A trial experiment revealed a temperature coefficient of less than -0.24$$pm$$ 0.05% / $$^{circ}$$C over the temperature range of 20-50$$^{circ}$$C.

A position-sensitive tubular scintillator-based neutron detector is proposed as an alternative to a $$^{3}$$He-gas-based detector. The detector has a neutron-detecting element constructed from rolled ZnS/$$^{6}$$LiF scintillator screens that sandwich wavelength-shifting (WLS) fibre coils (SFC element). Multiple SFC elements are enclosed in an aluminium tube in a row to form a one-dimensional position-sensitive neutron detector. The design of the WLS fibre coil, which was determined by performing basic experiments, comprised two 0.75-mm-diameter WLS fibres wound in parallel at a pitch of 1.5 mm. A 64-element detector with a pixel size of 22 mm $$times$$ 20 mm (width $$times$$ length) successfully demonstrated the detection principle. The tubular shape of the new detector is similar to the usual 25-mm-diameter $$^{3}$$He tube, making this an alternative detector with the potential to be installed in a vacuum tank for inelastic-neutron-scattering instruments.

Following FY2011, JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, the tree diagram of methodology of groundwater travel time has been extended for crystalline rock, in addition, tree diagram for sedimentary rock newly has been organized. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the existing approach has been improved in terms of a practical task, and applied and tested for near field focusing on the buffer. In addition, the uncertainty of some important processes and its impact on safety functions are discussed though analysis. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, the approaches for parameter setting have been developed for sorption for rocks and solubility, and applied and tested through parameter setting exercises for key radionuclides.

The crystal structure of a Cu amine oxidase from ${it Arthrobacter globiformis}$ was determined at 1.08 ${AA}$ resolution with the use of low-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol (LMW PEG; average molecular weight $$sim$$200) as a cryoprotectant. The final crystallographic $$R$$-factor and $$R$$$$_{rm free}$$ value are 13.0% and 15.0%, respectively. Several molecules of LMW PEG were found to occupy cavities in the protein interior including the active site, which resulted in the marked reduction of the overall ${it B}$ factor and consequently led to a sub-atomic resolution structure for a relatively large protein with a monomer molecular weight of $$sim$$70,000. About 40% of all the presumed hydrogen atoms were observed as clear electron densities in the $$F$$$$_{rm o}$$ - $$F$$$$_{rm c}$$ difference map. Multiple minor conformers were also identified for many residues. Anisotropic displacement fluctuations were evaluated in the active site that contains a post-translationally derived quinone cofactor and a Cu atom. Furthermore, diatomic molecules, most likely molecular oxygen, are bound to the protein, one of which is located in the region that has been previously proposed as an entry route for the substrate dioxygen from the central cavity of the dimer interface to the active site.
