Spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectivity obtains multiple reflectivity curves from a single sample and a single beam source. We used the strong point of the technique to reveal that, although methylated-perhydropolysilazane-derived silica layer has a higher porosity near the interface with acrylic urethane resin, the resin did not permeate the pore network.

Neutron polarization analysis (NPA) for small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments using a pulsed neutron source was successfully achieved by applying a $$^{3}$$He spin filter as a spin analyzer for the scattered neutrons. The $$^{3}$$He spin filter covers a sufficient solid angle for performing SANS experiments, and the relaxation time of the $$^{3}$$He polarization is sufficient for continuous use over a few days, thus reaching the typical duration required for a complete set of SANS experiments. Although accurate evaluation of the incoherent neutron scattering, which is predominantly attributable to hydrogen atoms in samples, is practically difficult using calculations based on the sample elemental composition, the developed NPA approach with consideration of the influence of multiple neutron scattering enabled reliable decomposition of the SANS intensity distribution into the coherent and incoherent scattering components. To date, NPA has not been well established as a standard technique for SANS experiments at pulsed neutron sources. This work is anticipated to greatly contribute to the accurate determination of the coherent neutron scattering component for scatterers in various types of organic sample systems in SANS experiments at J-PARC.

We developed a spin-contrast-variation neutron powder diffractometry technique that extracts the structure factor of hydrogen atoms, namely, the contribution of hydrogen atoms to a crystal structure factor. Crystals of L-glutamic acid were dispersed in a dpolystyrene matrix containing 4-methacryloyloxy-2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO methacrylate) to polarize their proton spins dynamically. The intensities of the diffraction peaks of the sample changed according to the proton polarization, and the structure factor of the hydrogen atoms was extracted from the proton-polarization dependent intensities. This technique is expected to enable analyses of the structures of hydrogen-containing materials that are difficult to determine with conventional powder diffractometry.

We developed a technique of spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectivity (SCV-NR) for structural analyses of multilayer films. The SCV-NR curves of the polystyrene monolayer film were precisely reproduced using a common set of structural parameters and neutron scattering length density at each proton polarization. This result ensures that SCV-NR curves are not deformed by inhomogeneous PH due to the spin-diffusion mechanism. The number of structural parameters of the lamellar microphase-separated poly(styrene-block-isoprene) thin film is too large to determine with a single unpolarized reflectivity curve only. However, these parameters converged through the global analysis of the SCV-NR curves. In this manner, SCV-NR determines the structure of multilayer films while excluding the incorrect structural model that accidentally accounts for a single unpolarized reflectivity curve only.

We developed a technique of spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectometry (SCV-NR). Polarized-neutron reflectivity curves of film samples vary as a function of their proton-polarization P. The P-dependent reflectivity curves of a polystyrene film was precisely reproduced using a common set of structure parameters and the P-dependent neutron scattering length. The reflectivity curve of poly (styrene-block-isoprene) (PSPI) presented a shoulder attributed to holes with the depth corresponding to one period of periodic lamellae on the free surface only at a specific P. In this way, structural information about specific surfaces or interfaces can be obtained by controlling the P.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Small-angle neutron scattering and neutron diffraction are powerful tools to characterize microstructures in steels. Several new experimental techniques such as Bragg edge transmission analysis and energy-resolved small-angle neuron scattering have been recently developed with the opening of new-generation pulsed neutron sources. In this talk, the combined use of these diffraction and small-angle scattering techniques are discussed for the total characterization of the microstructures in steels.

The twenty first meeting of the International Collaboration on Advanced Neutron Source (ICANS-XXI) was held at Ibaraki Prefectural Culture Center in Mito from 29 September to 3 October 2014. It was hosted by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) and Comprehensive Research Organization for Science and Society (CROSS). In the meeting, new science and technology in the new era with the high power neuron sources were discussed in mostly "workshop style" sessions. In each session, various kinds of issues related to not only the hardware, but also the software and even radiation safety were discussed with the keyword of "INTERFACE". More than 200 Papers were presented in the meeting and 72 contributed papers are compiled in the proceedings.

The polarized $$^{3}$$He filter, which polarizes neutrons due to a large neutron absorption cross section of $$^{3}$$He with strong spin selectivity, becomes a convenient neutron spin filter (NSF) because it is operated immediately after its installation in beam lines without any neutron beam adjustments. For realizing such the NSF, a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system is indispensable for monitoring $$^{3}$$He nuclear spin polarization ${it P}$ of the NSF. We have developed the flexible NMR system based on adiabatic fast passage (AFP) and pulse NMR methods by using their complementary features. In comparing with the values of ${it P}$ obtained by neutron transmission measurement at the beam line 10 of the J-PARC, we measured the correlations between the AFP and pulse NMR signals as changing condition of temperature, amplitude and applying period of the radio frequency field for the pulse NMR, and so on. As the results, we confirmed that our system would function enough as the ${it P}$ monitor.
