We have successfully observed the XMCD signals for all the constituent elements. The Mn L XAS and XMCD spectra are reproduced by spectral simulations based on density-functional theory, indicating the itinerant character of the Mn 3 states. On the other hand, the V 3 electrons are rather localized since the ionic model can qualitatively explain the V L XAS and XMCD spectra. This picture is consistent with local excitations revealed by the V L RIXS.

Single ion hitting caused crosslinking reactions of PVP and reduction of Pt ions within local cylindrical area along an ion trajectory (ion track); therefore, the PVP nanowires including Pt NPs were formed and isolated on Si substrate after wet-development procedure. The number of Pt NPs was easily controlled by the mixed ratio of PVP and HPtCl. However, increasing the amount of HPtCl led to decreasing the radial size and separation of the hybrid nanowires during the wet-development. Additional electron beam irradiation after ion beam improved separation of the nanowires and controlled radial sizes due to an increase in the density of crosslinking points inner the nanowires.

Here we report the result of the interaction of a single high-energy charged particle with protein molecules. Degradation of the human serum albumin nanowires was examined using trypsin. The biotinylated human serum albumin nanowires bound avidin, demonstrating the high affinity of the nanowires. Human serum albumin-avidin hybrid nanowires were also fabricated from a solid state mixture and exhibited good mechanical strength. The biotinylated human serum albumin nanowires can be transformed into nanowires exhibiting a biological function such as avidin-biotinyl interactions and peroxidase activity. The present technique is a versatile platform for functionalizing the surface of any protein molecule with an extremely large surface area.

We report on the fabrication of fullerene nanowires that is universally applicable to its derivatives (pristine C, methanofullerenes of C and C, and indene C bis-adduct). Nanowires with radii of 811 nm were formed via a chain polymerization reaction induced by a high-energy ion beam. Fabrication of a poly(3-hexylthiophene): [6,6]-phenyl C butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cell including PCBM nanowires with precisely-controlled length and density demonstrates how application of this methodology can improve the power conversion efficiency of these inverted cells.

The beam transport test is carried out through the test beam line of the laser-driven proton accelerator which consists of the phase rotation cavity, PMQ, and bending magnet. The laser system used is J-KAREN at JAEA. The final transmitted bunch duration and transverse profile are well predicted by the PARMILA particle transport code by assuming relatively low initial current of the proton beam. The most probable explanation for this is the space charge neutralization by the laser-plasma-electrons.

In addition, the proton spectral modulation and focusing behavior of the rf phase rotationcavity device is monitored with input from a PMQ triplet. In the 1.9 MeV region we observe very weakproton defocusing by the phase rotation cavity. The final transmitted bunch duration and transverse profile are well predicted by the PARMILA particle transport code. The transmitted proton beam duration of 6 ns corresponds to an energy spread near 5% for which the transport efficiency is simulated to be 10%. The predictive capability of PARMILA suggests that it can be useful in the design of future higher energy transport beam lines as part of an integrated laser-driven ion accelerator system.

We have succeeded in synthesizing ceramic nano fibers from precursor polymers using Single Particle Nanofabrication Technique (SPNT). A thin film of the precursor polymer was cross-linked by MeV-order heavy-ion beam irradiation along ion tracks of nano-size in radius through the whole thickness of the thin film. Nano fibers were developed on the surface of the substrate by dissolution and washing away of un-crosslinked polymer. Subsequent pyrolysis converted polymeric into ceramic nano fibers. The radius, length and number density of nano fibers are controlled by liner energy transfer (LET) of ion beam, thickness of polymeric target and number of projected ions, respectively.

The nanowires, which formed by crosslinking reaction along the single ion path, can isolated by development procedures. This technique is sometimes called as single particle nanofabrication technique (SPNT). In this paper, tow step irradiation of ion beam and ray was carried out in order to control their radial sizes. The radial sizes of nanowires, based on PS and PCS were increased with the dose of ray. The change of radial sizes, which depended on the dose, was quantitatively measured, and we discussed in terms of radiation induced gel formation.

The concept of a compact ion particle accelerator has become attractive in view of recent progress in laser-driven ion acceleration. We report here the recent progress in the laser-driven proton beam transport at the Photo Medical Research Center (PMRC) at JAEA, which is established to address the challenge of laser-driven ion accelerator development for ion beam cancer therapy.
