Mitsuyasu, Yusuke*; Oka, Toshitaka; Takahashi, Atsushi*; Kino, Yasushi*; Okutsu, Kenichi*; Sekine, Tsutomu*; Yamashita, Takuma*; Shimizu, Yoshinaka*; Chiba, Mirei*; Suzuki, Toshihiko*; et al.

Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 199(14), p.1620 - 1625, 2023/09

We have been conducting dose assessments for Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima to reveal radiobiological effects on the low-dose expose animals. To accurately determine the external exposure dose, it is desirable to examine the analysis of the CO$$_{2}^{-}$$ radical intensity. We examined ESR spectra of teeth of 10 macaques captured in Fukushima by two spectrum-decomposition algorithms.

The balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant activity, which is a defense mechanism against oxidative stress, was investigated in the liver and bladder of wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima Prefecture. No significant induction of oxidative stress by exposure to environmental radionuclides after the Fukushima nuclear accident was observed, suggesting that the stress defense mechanism of the organism is activated in some organs.

Rapid analysis of $$^{90}$$Sr in bone and tooth samples of cattle were achieved by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) coupled with mass shift and solid phase extraction techniques. Limit of detection (LOD) in the ICP-MS measurement of 0.1 g samples was lower than that of the radioactivity measurement. Analytical time of the ICP-MS method was reduced from 20 days to 11 hours, compared with the radiometric method. Therefore, the ICP-MS method can be rapid and useful procedure of $$^{90}$$Sr in small bone and tooth samples derived from terrestrial animals.

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

We have established an archive system of livestock and wild animals from the surrounding ex-evacuation zone. Wildlife within the alert zone have been exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation for a long and continuous time. In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of raccoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident. This study revealed that the chronic and LDR radiation exposure associated with the FDNPP accident had no adverse effect on the reproductive characteristics and functions of male raccoons.

Cast steel is one of the promising alternative to forged steel that is the current reference material for carbon steel overpack. In this study, the full-scale cast steel overpack was produced experimentally and the distribution of casting defects were investigated. The corrosion test regarding corrosion rate and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility were also conducted using samples taken from the full-scale cast steel overpack and the corrosion resistance of cast steel was compared with that of forged steel. From above two corrosion tests, it can be said that the corrosion resistance of cast steel is mostly the same as that of forged steel.

The relationship between the CO$$_{2}$$ radical intensity and the absorbed dose (dose response curve) of tooth enamel of Japanese macaque was observed by electron spin resonance and the detection limit of our system was estimated to be 33.5 mGy, which is comparable to the detection limit for human molar teeth. Using the dose response curve, external exposure dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima prefecture were examined. The results suggest that the external exposure dose for the wild Japanese macaques were ranged between 45 mGy to 300 mGy.

To ensure the safe geological disposal of radioactive waste, it is important to determine the permeability (hydraulic conductivity) of clays. The transient pulse method is suitable for low-permeability materials because it requires a relatively short time to determine their permeability. Upstream pore pressure typically increases in the measurement conducted via the transient pulse method. However, this procedure cannot be used to determine the permeability of clays due to the increase in pore pressure. Therefore, the transient pulse method has never been applied to determine clay permeability. In this study, we applied the transient pulse method to a clay sample to determine its permeability while decreasing the downstream pore pressure.

Information on the permeability of rock is essential for various geoengineering projects. It is especially important to investigate how fractures and pores influence the physical and transport properties of rock. Infiltration of groundwater through the damage zone fills fractures in granite with fine-grained minerals. However, the permeability of rock possessing a fracture naturally filled with fine-grained mineral grains has yet to be investigated. In this study, the permeabilities of granite samples, including a macro-fracture filled with clay and a mineral vein, are investigated. The permeability of granite with a fine-grained mineral vein agrees well with that of the intact sample, whereas the permeability of granite possessing a macro-fracture filled with clay is lower than that of the macro-fractured sample. The decrease in the permeability is due to the filling of fine-grained minerals and clay in the macro-fracture. It is concluded that the permeability of granite increases due to the existence of the fractures, but decreases upon filling them with fine-grained minerals.

To ensure the safe geological disposal of radioactive wastes, it is important to determine the permeability of clays. The transient pulse test is suitable to apply to the low permeability materials, because it takes relatively short term to determine the permeability. Usually we increase the upstream pore pressure in the measurement with the transient pulse test. However, it is impossible to determine the permeability of clay in this procedure because of the increase of pore pressure. Therefore, the transient pulse test has never been applied to the determination of permeability of clays. In this study, we tried to apply the transient pulse test to a clay obtained in Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory to determine the permeability with decreasing the downstream pore pressure. It was clarified that the transient pulse test with decreasing downstream pore pressure is appropriate from the measurements of granite and sandstone. It was shown that the permeability of a clay was determined by the transient pulse test with decreasing the downstream pore pressure, which agreed with the permeability determined from the falling head test. The measurement time of the transient pulse test is much shorter than that of the falling head test. It is concluded that the transient pulse test is appropriate for the determination of the permeability of clays.

Importance of temperature control in surrounding environment during permeability test for measuring hydraulic constants of rock

Kato, Masaji*; Nara, Yoshitaka*; Fukuda, Daisuke*; Kono, Masanori*; Sato, Toshinori; Sato, Tsutomu*; Takahashi, Manabu*

Zairyo, 65(7), p.489 - 495, 2016/07

Rock masses serve a vital function as natural barriers for geological disposal of radioactive waste; therefore, information on rock permeability is essential. Highly accurate measurement of permeability requires understanding of how temperature changes in the surrounding environment influence measurement results. We performed permeability measurement under conditions with dramatic changes of temperature in the surrounding environment to investigate the influence of such changes on the experimental results. Measurement of permeability with no temperature change was also conducted as reference. All measurements were conducted using the transient pulse method, and the sample material used was Toki granite obtained from Gifu Prefecture in central Japan. We found that temperature changes in the surrounding environment remarkably affected the pressure in reservoirs upstream and downstream, the pressure difference between them, and the confining pressure; all increased when temperature increased for our experimental system. Notably, pressure difference was affected immediately. This difference directly relates to estimation of permeability.

We have revealed the fundamental mechanism of specific Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption into Prussian blue (PB) in order to develop high-performance PB-based Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorbents in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident. We compared two types of PB nanoparticles with formulae of Fe$$^{III}$$$$_{4}$$[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]3$$cdot$$xH$$_{2}$$O (x = 10-15) (PB-1) and (NH$$_{4}$$)0.70Fe$$^{III}$$1.10[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]$$cdot$$1.7H$$_{2}$$O (PB-2) with respect to the Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption ability. The synthesised PB-1, by a common stoichiometric aqueous reaction between 4Fe$$^{3+}$$ and 3[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]$$^{4-}$$, showed much more efficient Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption ability than did the commercially available PB-2.

Carbon steel has been selected as one of the candidate materials for overpack for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste in Japan. Corrosion of carbon steel is divided into two types; general corrosion and localized corrosion. In this study, propagation behaviors of general and localized corrosions (pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion) were investigated by immersion tests of carbon steel under aerobic condition. The results of the immersion tests showed that the growth rate of corrosion was strongly dependent on the environmental condition and steel type, but the upper limit of pitting factor (the ratio of the maximum corrosion depth and the average corrosion depth) was approximately determined by only average corrosion depth. Based on these experimental data and literature data, an empirical model that predicts the maximum corrosion depth of an overpack from average corrosion depth was developed by applying the extreme value statistical analysis using the Gumbel distribution function.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the $$K$$ edge in NiO is analyzed theoretically. The antiferromagnetic groud state is described by the Hartree-Fock approximation, the core-hole potential is treated within the Born approximation, and the electron correlation effect is considered within the random-phase approximation. Consequently, the observed spectral shape and its dependence on the momentum transfer of scattered photons are explained quantitatively.

Theory of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering in transition-metal compounds

Nomura, Takuji; Igarashi, Junichi*; Takahashi, Manabu*

Hoshako, 20(3), p.171 - 179, 2007/05

Recently, electronic excitation spectra have been observed in strongly correlated electron systems such as transition-metal compounds, by utilizing the highly brilliant synchrotron radiation. Among them, momentum dependent excitation spectra are observed in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments at the transition-metal absorption $$K$$-edge in the hard X-ray regime. The microscopic theory of RIXS constructed recently by the present authors is explained. An essential point is that RIXS spectrum is closely related to the dynamical density correlation function of correlated transition-metal $$d$$ electrons. Spectral shapes and momentum dependence observed in several transition-metaloxides are semiquantitatively explained.

Discussion on sealing performance required in disposal system; Preliminary study on hydraulic analysis of disposal panel

Sugita, Yutaka*; Takahashi, Yoshiaki*; Uragami, Manabu*; Kitayama, Kazumi*; Fujita, Tomoo; Yui, Mikazu

JAEA-Research 2007-023, 70 Pages, 2007/03

JAEA-Research-2007-023.pdf:26.16MB

The sealing performance of a repository is very important for the safety assessment of the geological disposal system for high-level radioactive waste. NUMO and JAEA set up a technical commission to investigate sealing technology in a repository in 2004 following a cooperation agreement between these two organisations. The objectives of this commission were to present a concept of sealing performance required in the disposal system and to direct future R&D for design requirements of closure components (backfilling material, clay plug, etc.). Hydraulic analyses on tunnel intersections were carried out during the first year in 2004. This was expanded into a hydraulic analysis of a complete disposal panel with all tunnels during the second year in 2005. Since the model structure in 2005 was more complicated than the one used in 2004, the concept of equivalent permeability was adopted in and around each tunnel in the hydraulic analyses. Parameters used in the hydraulic analyses were installation positions of clay plugs, permeability of the backfilling material, permeability of disposal tunnel and directions of hydraulic gradient to estimate influences to the analytical results preliminary. Analytical results showed that flow rate in a disposal tunnel was influenced by directions of hydraulic gradient, installation of the clay plug at the both ends of each disposal tunnel and permeability of the main tunnel.
