In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

Benchmark analysis of ductile fracture simulation for circumferentially cracked pipes subjected to bending

To predict fracture behavior for ductile materials, some ductile fracture simulation methods different from classical approaches have been investigated based on appropriate models of ductile fracture. For the future use of the methods to overcome restrictions of classical approaches, the applicability to the actual components is of concern. In this study, two benchmark problems on the fracture tests supposing actual components were provided to investigate prediction ability of simulation methods containing parameter decisions. One was the circumferentially through-wall and surface cracked pipes subjected to monotonic bending, and the other was the circumferentially through-wall cracked pipes subjected to cyclic bending. Participants predicted the ductile crack propagation behavior by their own approaches, including FEM employed GTN yielding function with void ratio criterion, are FEM employed GTN yielding function, FEM with fracture strain or energy criterion modified by stress triaxiality, XFEM with J or delta J criterion, FEM with stress triaxiality and plastic strain based ductile crack propagation using FEM, and elastic-plastic peridynamics. Both the deformation and the crack propagation behaviors for monotonic bending were well reproduced, while few participants reproduced those for cyclic bending. To reproduce pipe deformation and fracture behaviors, most of groups needed parameters which were determined toreproduce pipe deformation and fracture behaviors in benchmark problems themselves and it is still difficult to reproduce them by using parameters only from basic materials tests.

Extraction behavior of a novel functionalized ionic liquid for separation of platinum group metals from aqueous nitric acid solution

A novel ionic liquid (IL) functionalized with thiodiglycol amic acid containing a soft S donor was synthesized for the effective and efficient extraction of platinum group metals (Ru, Rh, and Pd) from aqueous nitric acid solutions, such as high-level radioactive liquid waste (HLLW). The IL allowed a rapid extraction of Pd(II) with an extraction ratio of approximately 100%. The extractions of Ru(III) and Rh(III) by the IL were slower than that of Pd(II), but the rates were accelerated by temperature elevation. The extractions of Ru(III) and Rh(III) at 50$$^{circ}$$C reached equilibrium within 4 and 8 h, respectively, with the extraction ratios of over 90% without assisting agents or other methods for the extraction system. Furthermore, the IL could extract more than 90% of Ru(III), Rh(III), and Pd(II) from the simulated HLLW within 2 h at 50$$^{circ}$$C.

A precise and stable timing system is necessary for high intensity proton accelerators such as the J-PARC. The existing timing system, which was developed during the construction period of the-PARC, has been working without major issues since 2006. After a decade of operation, the optical modules, which are key components for signal transfer, were discontinued already. Thus, the next-generation timing system for the J-PARC is under development. The new system is designed to be compatible with the existing system in terms of the operating principle. The new system utilizes modern high speed signal communication for the transfer of the clock, trigger, and type code. We present the system configuration of the next-generation timing system and current status.

Corrosion resistance of a cast steel overpack for high-level radioactive waste disposal in Japan

Cast steel is one of the promising alternative to forged steel that is the current reference material for carbon steel overpack. In this study, the full-scale cast steel overpack was produced experimentally and the distribution of casting defects were investigated. The corrosion test regarding corrosion rate and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility were also conducted using samples taken from the full-scale cast steel overpack and the corrosion resistance of cast steel was compared with that of forged steel. From above two corrosion tests, it can be said that the corrosion resistance of cast steel is mostly the same as that of forged steel.

Next generation timing system for J-PARC

Precise timing pulses from the timing system are necessary for acceleration of high intensity proton beams in the J-PARC accelerators. The existing timing system was developed during the construction period of the J-PARC. The system has been working well for more than ten years, however, the optical modules for the signal transfer from the central control building to the accelerators are discontinued already. Although we have spares of the optical devices, maintenance of the system will be difficult. Therefore, we are developing the next generation timing system for the J-PARC. We present the design of the system, preliminary test results, and future plans.

Update of MPS modules for J-PARC Linac and RCS

In the event of an abnormal situation, a machine protection system (MPS) that immediately inhibits the beam is indispensable to minimize the damage and the radioactivation by beam loss. The existing MPS was developed during the construction period of the J-PARC. Then, the system has been working stably for more than ten years. On the other hand, since there are many MPS modules that have been used from the beginning of J-PARC operation, it is important to systematically proceed with updating (replacement) of modules as a measure against aging of MPS. However, the main components of the existing MPS module have been discontinued. Therefore, it is indispensable to redesign the MPS modules in consideration of improvement such as the compatibility with existing modules and the miniaturization. In this paper, the development status of the new module and the update plan of MPS for Linac and RCS are detailed.

Stabilization of timing system operation of J-PARC Linac and RCS

The timing system data (delay value, status, etc.) of J-PARC Linac and rapid cycling synchrotron is managed by a computer. After updating this hardware, we encountered the problem of data corruption in the timing system. Therefore, we added a function to the software for the timing system VME and investigated the cause of the problem. The investigation results showed a problem with the network connected PCI-Express reflective memory. We implemented measures for stabilizing the timing system operation based on this result.

In the J-PARC, a 3 MeV linac has been developed for the tests of beam scraper irradiation and charge exchange by high-power laser. To accomplish tests efficiently and safely, the control system for 3 MeV was designed and developed, and this system consists of four subsystems, personal protection system, machine protection system, timing system, and remote control system using the EPICS. In this paper, the details of control system for a 3 MeV linac are presented.

Inter-atomic force constants of BaF$$_{2}$$ by diffuse neutron scattering measurement

Diffuse neutron scattering measurement on BaF$$_{2}$$ crystals was performed at 10 K and 295 K. Oscillatory form in the diffuse scattering intensity of BaF$$_{2}$$ was observed at 295 K. The correlation effects among thermal displacements of F-F atoms were obtained from the analysis of oscillatory diffuse scattering intensity. From the values of correlation effects and Debye-Waller temperature parameters, force constants among the first and second nearest neighboring atoms of BaF$$_{2}$$, were determined to be 4.40 and 2.30 eV/$AA$^{2}$$ at 295 K, respectively

The correlations of atomic thermal displacements in Al were obtained from the analysis of diffuse neutron scattering intensity. The interatomic force constants were determined from the correlation effects using a newly introduced equation. The derived force constants and the crystal structure of Al were used to estimate the phonon dispersion relations, phonon density of states, and specific heat by computer simulation. The calculated phonon dispersion relations and specific heat of Al are similar to those obtained from inelastic neutron scattering and specific heat measurements, respectively.

Diffuse neutron scattering measurement on Ag$$_{2}$$O crystals was performed at 8 K and 295 K. The observed diffuse scattering intensities were analyzed by including the correlation effects among thermal displacements of atoms in Ag$$_{2}$$O. Using the values of correlation effects among neighboring atoms and the values of Debye-Waller temperature parameter, force constants among first, second and third nearest neighboring atoms have been evaluated.

A beam position monitor (BPM) system at J-PARC RCS is described. The J-PARC RCS is a rapid-cycling proton synchrotron and its designed beam power is 1 MW. A diameter of the BPM detector is larger than 250 mm, however the system has to measure the beam position very accurately. The system should work not only for the high intensity but also for lower intensity. There are 54 BPM around the ring and most of them are placed inside steering magnets because of quite limited space. The BPM detector is an electro static type and it has four electrodes, and a pair of electrode gives a good linear response with diagonal cut shape to detect the charge center precisely. The signal processing unit, which is equipped with 14-bit 40 MSPS ADC and 600 MHz DSP, has been developed. They are controlled via shared memory space and EPICS. It is capable to record full 25 Hz pulse data for averaged mode and it could also store whole waveform data for further analysis, like turn-by-turn position calculation.
