JAEA-Review-2021-031.pdf:11.79MB

Tono Geoscience Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been conducting mine closure activities at Tono Mine based on "Plan for closure activities of the Tono Mine" since FY2010. The closure activities of the Tono Mine are carried out in accordance with the Mining Act, the Mine Safety Act and the Industrial Safety and Health Act. In particular, in order to examine the technologies applied to the closure activities of the Tono mine, also the surrounding environmental monitoring, "Technical Committee on Mine Closure Activities of the Tono Mine" was organized at Tono Geoscience Center in FY2013 and the results in the previous fiscal year and the plan for the current fiscal year have been reported and discussed at the annual meeting. As a result, it has been confirmed that the closure activities are making progress as planned and that the environment around the mine meets the legally required standards from the monitoring results. This document is a compilation of meeting materials of all eight committee meetings held between FY2013 and FY2019.

A Remote continuous air monitoring system for measuring airborne alpha contamination

We developed a remote continuous air monitoring (RCAM) system. The RCAM system consisted of a personal air monitor and a robot. The personal air monitor (poCAMon, SARAD, Germany) had a 400 mm$$^{2}$$ ion-injected silicon detector and a membrane air filter with 25 mm-diameter. The personal air monitor provides the alpha energy spectra for any measurement time interval. Demonstration measurements were taken underground at the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) and at a poorly ventilated concrete building. The RCAM system was remotely operated and successfully measured the $$^{222}$$Rn progeny even though the relative humidity (RH) was almost 100%. In the measured alpha spectra, the peaks of $$^{218}$$Po (6.0 MeV alpha) and $$^{214}$$Po (7.7 MeV alpha) were clearly identified. Our developed monitor is promising for alpha dust monitoring in a high gamma-ray environment or contaminated areas where a worker cannot safely physically enter.

We reanalyzed the survival fraction data, using the microdosimetric-kinetic (MK) model implemented in the PHITS code. It is found from the analysis that the MK model successfully accounts for the cell survival-fractions under a variety of irradiation conditions, using only y* parameter.

Monitoring of groundwater quality from boreholes around the former Yotsugi open-pit mining site in the Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering Center, JNC, has been carried out to estimate the environmental safety around the site. On 2000 FY, the monitoring with depth profiling of a physical-chemical parameter for the purpose of improving sampling method and updating data sets for the analysis has been implemented. And it revealed that: (1)U in groundwater and Ra concentration do not have a big variation. (2)Redox potential from almost all the boreholes tends to decrease according to the depth. On the other hand, there are a few dependence tendencies of the water temperature of groundwater and depth of pH and DO.

(2)Although in the hall water is considered to carry out underground osmosis, the value exceeding the concentration standard is not observed in the present. (3)The type of water quality from the impoundment are as same as one of boreholes located in downstream zone of the Dam.

Monitoring of groundwater quality from boreholes in and around the former Yotsugi open-pit mining site in the Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering Center, JNC, have been carried out to estimate extent and quality of contaminated water plume from the buried heap-leaching residue. In this report, data collected from 1979 to 1998 fiscal year were listed and their spatial and time variation of physicochemical parameters, uranium and radium were also summarzed. Additionally, groundwater sampler has been improved and analytical method has been modified. Some results from groundwater quality were; (1)Generally, electric conductivity and concentrations of uranium and radium outside of the site tend to lower than one from the inside area. (2)Data from borehole No.13, installed outside of the site, exceptionally little higher than one from the inside area.

Monitoring of groundwater quality from boreholes around the Yotsugi mill-tailings dam, in the Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering Center, JNC, have been carried out to estimate extent and quality of contaminated water plume from the mill-tailings pile. In this report, data collected from 1979 to 1998 fiscal year were listed and their spatial and time variation of physicochemical parameters, uranium and radium were also summarized. Additionally, groundwater sampler has been improved and analytical method has been modified. Some results from groundwater quality were; (1)Uranium and radium concentrations were low, although unexpected change was appeared in some borehole. (2)Water table and temperature from boreholes on the left bank of the dam showed drasticaIly change. (3)Etectric conductivity and concentrations of various dissolved ions tend to high from the embankment upward, whereas they tend to low from the embankment downward.

JNC-TN6400-99-004.pdf:1.44MB

We have carried out the measurement of the porewater pressure and the analysis of chemistry of groundwater including dissolved gas, in order to evaluate monitoring apparatus (MP System) installed in the borehole, NKS-1 at the Ningyo-toge, Okayama, Japan. This report includes the data, which have been measured unti1 1998 fiscal year and their brief summaries. The results were summarized as follows; (1)According to the data of piezometric head and their variations, hydraulic zones are divided into four parts. (2)The groundwater chemistry are in the range of the weak alkaline Ca(HCO$$_{3}$$) type and the NaHCO$$_{3}$$ type. (3)The formation of the groundwater chemistry may be accompanied with dissolution-precipitation of fissure filling minerals such as calcite, plagioclase feldspar, clay minerals and zeolite. (4)The redox values of the groundwater indicate from -186 to 355mV using glass electrode, whereas estimated values based on CO$$_{2}$$/CH$$_{4}$$ pair in dissolved gas indicate from -350 to -200mV.
