A superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter is an ideal X-ray detector for experiments at accelerator facilities because of good energy resolution and high efficiency. To study the performance of the TES detector with a high-intensity pulsed charged-particle beam, we measured X-ray spectra with a pulsed muon beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Japan. We found substantial temporal shifts of the X-ray energy correlated with the arrival time of the pulsed muon beam, which was reasonably explained by pulse pileup due to the incidence of energetic particles from the initial pulsed beam.

We observed electronic $$K$$X rays emitted from muonic iron atoms using a superconducting transition-edge-type sensor microcalorimeter. The energy resolution of 5.2 eV in FWHM allowed us to observe the asymmetric broad profile of the electronic characteristic $$K$$$$alpha$$ and $$K$$$$beta$$ X rays together with the hypersatellite $$K$$$$alpha$$ X rays around 6 keV. This signature reflects the time-dependent screening of the nuclear charge by the negative muon and the $$L$$-shell electrons, accompanied by electron side-feeding. Assisted by a simulation, this data clearly reveals the electronic $$K$$- and $$L$$-shell hole production and their temporal evolution during the muon cascade process.

Fission-fragment mass distributions were measured for $$^{237-240}$$U, $$^{239-242}$$Np and $$^{241-244}$$Pu populated in the excitation-energy range from 10 to 60 MeV by multi-nucleon transfer channels in the reaction $$^{18}$$O + $$^{238}$$U at the JAEA tandem facility. Among them, the data for $$^{240}$$U and $$^{240,241,242}$$Np were observed for the first time. It was found that the mass distributions for all the studied nuclides maintain a double-humped shape up to the highest measured energy in contrast to expectations of predominantly symmetric fission due to the washing out of nuclear shell effects. From a comparison with the dynamical calculation based on the fluctuation-dissipation model, this behavior of the mass distributions was unambiguously attributed to the effect of multi-chance fission.

Watakabe, Tomoyoshi; Yamamoto, Tomohiko; Fukasawa, Tsuyoshi*; Okamura, Shigeki*; Somaki, Takahiro*; Morobishi, Ryota*; Sakurai, Yu*; Kato, Koji*

Proceedings of 2016 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference (PVP 2016) (Internet), 8 Pages, 2016/07

A seismic isolation system composed of a thick rubber bearing and an oil damper has been developed for Sodium cooled Fast Reactor. One of the advantages of the isolation system is employing the thick rubber bearing in order to realize the longer vertical natural period of a plant, and it leads to mitigation of seismic loads to mechanical components. Rubber bearing technology has progressed based on many past studies, but test data regarding an aging effect is not enough. Also, there is no data of linear strain limit and breaking behavior for the thick rubber bearing after aging. This paper focuses on aging properties of the thick rubber bearing, such as basic mechanical properties and ultimate strength. An aging promote test of the thick rubber bearing was performed by using 1/2 scale and 1/8 scale rubber bearings. Aging of the rubber bearing was reproduced by thermal degradation, where the target aging period was 30 years and 60 years. The load deflection curves of the thick rubber bearing after aging were obtained through the horizontal and vertical static loading tests, and the aging effect was evaluated by comparing with the initial mechanical properties.

Nucleoside diphosphate kinase isolated from psychrophilic ${it Pseudoalteromonas}$ sp. AS-131 (ASNDK) was expressed in ${it Escherichia coli}$ and purified to homogeneity. Comparing to mesophilic NDK isolated from ${it Pseudomonas aeruginosa}$, ASNDK exhibited highly elevated thermolability: (1) ${it E. coli}$ expression at 37$$^{circ}$$C as a denatured insoluble form, and (2) 30$$^{circ}$$C lower optimum temperature of enzymatic activity. The subunit structure of ASNDK was suggested to be dimer, as in NDKs isolated from moderate halophiles.

Heat transfer characteristics of sodium-water reaction jet around a tube in steam generator of sodium-cooled fast reactor

Kurihara, Akikazu; Umeda, Ryota; Shimoyama, Kazuhito; Abe, Yuta; Kikuchi, Shin; Ohshima, Hiroyuki

Nihon Kikai Gakkai Rombunshu, B, 79(808), p.2640 - 2644, 2013/12

Overheating tube rupture of adjacent tubes arises from water/steam leak in steam generators of sodium-cooled fast reactors. It is very important to predict the tube wall stress (tube wall temperature) with a high degree of accuracy on evaluation of overheating tube rupture, and is crucial to estimate quantitatively the heat transfer coefficient between reaction jet and adjacent tubes which is one of the major influencing factor. The authors carried out the sodium-water reaction test (SWAT-1R) under the simulated operation condition of a real plant, and measured the correlation between heat transfer coefficient and void fraction around an adjacent tube. The authors confirmed that thermal environment around an adjacent tube was inferable from measured data, and heat transfer correlation equation proposed by Hamada et al. was applicable to the operation condition at elevated pressure and temperature.

The chemical structures of various ion-beam irradiated isotactic-polypropylene samples were studied. Results of micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy suggest not only the linear energy transfer, but also the fluence is effective in local transformation of the isotactic-polypropylene.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

A novel dinuclear nickel-ruthenium complex with a bridging hydrido ligand, a Ni($$mu$$-H)Ru complex, was obtained from the reaction of a dinuclear NiRu aqua complex with dihydrogen (H$$_{2}$$) in water under ambient conditions. The structure of the Ni($$mu$$-H)Ru complex was unequivocally determined by neutron analysis. This is the first crystal structure of (six-coordinated Ni)($$mu$$-H)M (M=transition metal atoms) that is similar to the core structure of the proposed active form of the [NiFe]hydrogenase.
