We investigated the magnetization process of Fe (110) film using the field dependence of magnetic Compton scattering and M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy. From the magnetic Compton profiles, the spin and orbital magnetic moment specific magnetization versus magnetizing field curves were obtained. From the M$"o$ssbauer spectra, the angles between the magnetizing field and the magnetic moment were obtained. It was found that the magnetizing field dependence of the ratio between orbital moment and spin moment was related to the angles between the magnetizing field and the magnetic moment. We indicate that the magnetic field dependence of the orbital magnetic moment plays a role in the magnetization process.

In this study, we have measured the Ti 2p edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectra of MTiO3 (M= Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) in order to investigate the intermetallic M 3d-Ti 3d charge transfer. We found the peak around -4.5 eV in the energy loss scale for all MTiO$$_{3}$$ and additionally found that only FeTiO$$_{3}$$ has a peak at at -2.5 eV. Those peaks are attributed to the M 3d-Ti 3d charge transfer.

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) of BiNi$$_{1_x}$$Fe$$_x$$O$$_3$$ is investigated by dilatometric curves, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. All samples (x=0.05-0.15) shows large NTE with the coefficient of linear thermal expansion which induced by charge transfer between Bi$$^{5+}$$ and Ni$$^{2+}$$ in the controlled temperature range near room temperature. Compared with Bi$$_{1_x}$$Ln$$_x$$NiO$$_3$$ (Ln: rare-earth elements), the thermal hysteresis that causes a problem for practical application is suppressed because random distribution of Fe in the Ni site changes the first order transition to second order-like transition.

In this paper, we report on the study of the temperature dependence of Fe L$$_{3}$$-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of LuFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$. In the charge ordered state the valence of Fe is in Fe$$^{2+}$$ and Fe$$^{3+}$$. And the Fe L$$_{3}$$-edge XAS spectra have double peak structure which is attributed the Fe$$^{2+}$$ and Fe$$^{3+}$$ state. In high temperature, the double peak structure becomes indistinct because the thermal excited state overlaps while the Fe valence keeping the integer number.

In this study, we report the O 1$$s$$ and Cu 2$$p$$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) study on the A-site ordered perovskite ACu$$_3$$Ru$$_4$$O$$_{12}$$ (A = Na, Ca, and La). Hartree-Fock calculation and cluster model calculation were carried out to analyze O 1$$s$$ and Cu 2$$p$$ XAS spectra. The O 1$$s$$ RXES spectra indicate that the number of O 2$$p$$ holes increases in going from La to Ca to Na. In addition, the Cu 2$$p$$ RXES spectra reveal that the charge-transfer energy decreases in going from La to Ca to Na.

We have succeeded in measuring microscopic magnetic hysteresis loop of amorphous Tb$$_{43}$$Co$$_{57}$$ film. Spin selective magnetic hysteresis (SSMH) loop was measured by magnetic Compton scattering at synchrotron radiation facility SPring-8 and obtaining orbital selective magnetic hysteresis (OSMH) loop was firstly obtained by combining with result of macroscopic magnetic hysteresis loop.

An application of magnetic Compton scattering as a new tool to measure a spin-specific magnetic hysteresis loop was introduced and demonstrated its validity. The applied magnetic field dependence of the integrated intensity of magnetic Compton scattering spectra was interpreted as the spin-specific hysteresis in this study.

Chemical-evolution in glycilglycine (Gly2) films irradiated by 146 nm light was studied. It was found that quantum efficiency of chemical evolution from Gly2 to glycilglycilglycine (Gly3) is smaller than that to glycilglycilglycilglycine (Gly4) due to the multiple step of reaction. From natural circular dichroism spectra measurements for serine and alanine films, we found the splitting of 1s$$rightarrow$$$$pi$$$$^{*}$$ transitions in the energy region of oxygen 1s.

Soft X-ray natural circular dichroism spectra of serine and alaninethin films, were measured in absolute value with the focus at the oxygen 1s to $$pi$$$$^{*}$$ transition of COO$$^{-}$$. The soft X-ray natural circular dichroism spectra intensity of L-Ala was about ten times as large as that of L-Ser. Those differences would reflect the chiral environment of the core hole oxygen atoms of COO$$^{-}$$.

A-site-ordered perovskites LaMn$$_{3}$$Cr$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$ and LaMn$$_{3}$$Ti$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$ were synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The charge formula of LaMn$$_{3}$$Cr$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$ was found to be LaMn$$_{3}$$Cr$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$ with Mn$$^{3+}$$ at the square-coordinated A site. The valence of the A-site Mn ions in LaMnTi$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$ appeared to be less than +2, and the charge combination in this compound seemed to be LaMnTi$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$. Although the square-coordinated A site in A-site-ordered perovskites has been widely known to be occupied by Jahn-Teller active Mn$$^{3+}$$, the present results show that the valence of Mn at the A site can vary from +3 to possible +1.67.

Intermetallic charge transfer in FeTiO$$_{3}$$ probed by resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering

We studied the electronic structure of FeTiO$$_{3}$$. The experimental technique used in this study was Ti 2$$p$$ soft resonant X-ray inelastic scattering spectroscopy (RIXS) and it was carried out at I511-3 at MAX-lab. FeTiO$$_{3}$$ has the ilmenite structure and this is an ordered corundum structure. Ions of Fe and Ti occupy the basal cation planes alternatively in which Fedivalent and Ti is tetravalent. Local symmetry around transition metal ions, both Fe and Ti, are in the distorted Oh symmetry. Butorin et al had reported the RIXS spectra of Ti La,b (Phy. Rev. B55 (1997) 4242) in the 3$$d$$$$^{0}$$ compounds and discussed the charge-transfer transitions from Ti 3$$d$$ - O 2$$p$$ hybridization. In this study, we measured Ti La,b RIXS of FeTiO$$_{3}$$ in detail and the spectra shows rich resonant feature. When the excitation energy is tuned at the well-defined $$e$$$$_{g}$$ peak of Ti L3 X-ray absorption spectrum (XAS), a clear small peak appears at 2.5 eV below from the elastic peak. An additional peak comes up at 4.5 eV below the elastic peak when the excitation energy is tuned at the well defined $$t$$$$_{2g}$$ peak of XAS. The spectral features are attributed to eg and $$t$$$$_{2g}$$ state of Ti 3$$d$$ due to crystal field and charge transfer between Ti 3$$d$$ and O 2$$p$$. We are analyzing the RIXS spectra within the cluster model in order to investigate the clear resonant peaks. By demonstrating a double-cluster model calculation taking into account offull-multiplet, we conclude that the origin of features are attributed to Fe 3$$d$$ $$rightarrow$$ Ti 3$$d$$ charge transfer process with $$d$$-$$d$$ charge transfer form Fe to Ti, e.g. it is due to inter-metallic charge transfer, which is a new essential elementary optical process in RIXS study.
