The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

AMATERAS is a cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer in MLF, J-PARC. The construction of main part of the spectrometer has been completed in spring of 2009. Soon after that, we have started the commissioning work on AMATERAS. The performance of AMATERAS has been examined by test experiments in the course of commissioning. In parallel to these works, we have started the user program on AMATERAS from December 2009 and we are getting scientific results from our spectrometer. In this presentation, we will report the current status of AMATERAS including the results of performance tests and some of examples of scientific outputs.

Oxygen is essential for the survival of animals. Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen to tissues. We established a semi-solid colony forming assay, and showed that recombinant xlEPO induces erythroid colony formation in vitro and detected an increased level of erythropoietin activity in blood serum during acute anemic stress. In addition, the study demonstrated the possible presence of multiple, non-xlEPO, factors in anemic serum supportive of erythroid colony formation. These results indicate that erythropoiesis mediated by erythropoietin is present in amphibian species and, furthermore, that the regulatory mechanisms controlling peripheral erythrocyte number may vary among vertebrates.

"R&D Project on Irradiation Damage Management Technology for Structural Materials of Long-life Nuclear Plant" was carried out from FY2006 in a fund of a trust enterprise of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The coupled irradiations or single irradiation by JOYO fast reactor and JRR-3 thermal reactor were performed for about two years. The irradiation specimens are very important materials to establish of "Evaluation of Irradiation Damage Indicator" in this research. For the acquisition of the examination specimens irradiated by the JOYO and JRR-3, we summarized about the overall plan, the work process and the results for the study to utilize these reactors and some facilities of hot laboratory (WASTEF, JMTR-HL, MMF and FMF) of the Oarai Research-and-Development Center and the Nuclear Science Research Institute in the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

A research project entitled "Development of the 4D Space Access Neutron Spectrometer (4SEASONS) and Elucidation of the Mechanism of Oxide High-$$T_c$$ Superconductivity" has started in 2005 (repr. by M. Arai). It is supported by MEXT, Grant-in-Aid for Specially Promoted Research and is going to last until fiscal 2009. The goal of the project is to elucidate the mechanism of oxide high-$$T_c$$ superconductivity by neutron scattering technique. For this purpose, we will develop an inelastic neutron scattering instrument 4SEASONS (4d SpacE AccesS neutrON Spectrometer) for the spallation neutron source in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The instrument will have 100 times higher performance than existing world-class instruments, and will enable detailed observation of anomalous magnetic excitations and phonons in a four-dimensional momentum-energy space. This report summarizes the progress in the research project in fiscal 2007.

4SEASONS is one of the day-one chopper spectrometers for the spallation neutron facility in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The spectrometer targets high-$$T_c$$ superconductors and related strongly correlated materials utilizing incident energies of 5-300 meV. 4SEASONS supplies high flux at a sample by moderating the resolution ($$Delta E/E_i = 5$$-6% at $$E = 0$$) and incorporating efficient neutron optic devices. A new Fermi chopper is designed to multiply the measurement efficiency by repetition rate multiplication (RRM). Recently, we have decided to enlarge the detector coverage by $$30^{circ}$$ in horizontal direction (with the maximum scattering angle being $$120^{circ}$$) to let the spectrometer have more flexibility. The designing of the vacuum scattering chamber has been almost completed. Examination of the 2.5m-$$^3$$He PSD on neutron beam and manufacturing of a prototype of a slit package of the new chopper are going on.

4SEASONS is a chopper-type inelastic neutron spectrometer, and one of the day-one instruments at the spallation neutron source facility in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The targeted energy range is 5-300meV, and the spectrometer is optimized in intensity in this energy range by moderating the resolutions ($$Delta E/E_i sim 6$$% at $$E=0$$), by incorporating an efficient beam transport system, and by realizing multi incident energy ($$E_i$$) measurement. The high intensity and efficiency available at 4SEASONS make this spectrometer suitable for study of novel quantum phenomena in high-$$T_c$$ superconductors and related systems. In the present paper, we will report the current status of the development and the construction of 4SEASONS, such as construction of the vacuum tank and the shielding, development of the new Fermi chopper for the multi-$$E_i$$ measurement, 2.5m-long $$^3$$He PSDs, and the beam transport system.

We are proceeding with the study of "R&D Project on Irradiation Damage Management Technology for Structural Materials of Long-life Nuclear Plant". For the study, it is important that the irradiated specimens are gotten by the coupling of JRR-3 and JOYO. This reports the total irradiation plan in the study, and the executed work for the coupling irradiation (JRR-3 and JOYO) including the Hot facilities work of Tokai and Oarai in the 2006 fiscal year.

4SEASONS is one of the neutron chopper spectrometers in J-PARC/MLF. It is intended to provide very high counting rate up to 300 meV neutron energy with medium resolution ($$Delta E/E_i sim 6$$% at $$E=0$$) to efficiently collect weak inelastic signals from novel spin and lattice dynamics especially in high-$$T_c$$ superconductors and related materials. To achieve this goal, the spectrometer equips advanced instrumental design such as an elliptic-shaped converging neutron guide coated with high-$$Q_c$$ ($$m=3$$-4) supermirror, long-length (2.5 m) $$^3$$He PSDs arranged cylindrically inside the vacuum scattering chamber. Furthermore, the spectrometer is ready for multi-incident-energy measurements by the repetition rate multiplication method with a special Fermi chopper, and polarization analysis with $$^3$$He spin filters. 4SEASONS is now under construction and will be ready to use in December 2008. In this paper, we show the design of 4SEASONS and current status of its construction.
