Since the International Commission on Radiological Protection recommended reducing the occupational equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye in 2011, there have been extensive discussions in various countries. This paper reviews the current situations in radiation protection of the ocular lens and the discussions on the potential impact of the new lens dose limit in Japan. Topics include historical changes to the lens dose limit, the current situations in occupational lens exposures (e.g., in medical workers, nuclear workers, and Fukushima nuclear power plant workers) and measurements, and the current status of biological studies and epidemiological studies on radiation cataracts. Our focus is on the situations in Japan, but we believe such information sharing will be useful in many other countries.

In a mixed field of photon and beta radiations, the same dose assigned to skin is normally assigned to the dose to the lens of the eye as a conservative estimate of H$$_{p}$$(3). In exceptional cases that a very high beta dose might be imparted of the same order with the dose limit, however, the conservatively biased dose must be too limiting, and thereby an accurate estimate of beta $$H_{rm p}$$(3) is desirable. This article presents a practical proposal of when and how the dosimetry of beta $$H_{rm p}$$(3) should be made.

Interim report of the JHPS expert committee on radiation protection of the lens of the eye, 2; The Dosimetry method for the lens of the eye of workers in Japan

A brief review is given of the history and methodology of external dosimetry for the lens of the eye. Under the 1989 revision to domestic radiological protection regulations, the concept on the effective dose equivalent and the dose limit to the lens of the eye (150 mSv/y) both introduced in ICRP 1977 recommendations has changed nationwide the external monitoring methodology in non-uniform exposure situations to the trunk of a radiological worker. In such situations, often created by the presence of a protective apron, the worker is required to use at least two personal dosemeters, one worn on the trunk under the apron and the other, typically, at the collar over the apron. The latter dosemeter serves the dual purpose of providing the dose profile across the trunk for improved effective dose equivalent assessment and of estimating the dose to lens of the eye. The greater or appropriate value between $$H_{rm p}$$(10) and $$H_{rm p}$$(0.07), given by the dosemeter, is generally used as a surrogate of $$H_{rm p}$$(3).

Compensation of residual third-order dispersion in a fiber stretched, chirped-pulse amplification system using a grism pair

Ogawa, Kanade; Akahane, Yutaka; Tsuji, Koichi; Yamakawa, Koichi

Reza Kenkyu, 38(10), p.779 - 783, 2010/10

We have newly designed a grism pair compensator for third-order dispersion in a fiber stretched chirped-pulse amplification system. In a numerical calculation, we have obtained a pedestal-free re-compressed pulse close to the transform-limited pulse using the grism pair. We have experimentally demonstrated a two-fold enhancement of peak intensity and pulse shortening of the compressed pulse with this device.

We have proposed and demonstrated a very simple and robust femtosecond optical-parametric chirped-pulse amplification scheme in which an even order dispersion of an idler pulse is compensated by passing through an identical positive dispersive material used for temporal stretching a signal pulse. By compressing the idler pulses having a negatively chirp in this manner, high power sub-100 fs pulses were successfully obtained with only a transparent glass block used for the stretcher and compressor.

Using a partially deuterated KDP crystal for an optical parametric amplifier, we demonstrated ultrabroadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification of more than 250 nm bandwidth at a center wavelength of 1050 nm. We numerically show how to control the broadband phase matching conditions at different wavelengths to match center wavelengths of suitable broadband seed sources by adjusting the deuteration level in partially deuterated KDP.

Reza Kenkyu, 36(9), p.555 - 561, 2008/09

We review progress in the generation of ultrahigh-intensity optical pulses in a few-cycle regime. A design of a Generation of ENergetic Beam Ultimate (GENBU) laser based on optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification, which will be produced a peak power of up to 6-PW with a variable pulse durations ranging from 5-fs to 8-ps is described. Ultra-broadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification pumped by a picosecond laser pulse delivered from a diode-pumped, cryogenically-cooled Yb:YLF chirped-pulse amplification laser is also reported.

A diode-pumped, cryogenically-cooled Yb:LuLiF$$_{4}$$ regenerative amplifier has been developed for the first time to our knowledge. A chirped-seed pulse was amplified and compressed in the regenerative amplifier, simultaneously, which generated $$sim$$6-mJ, 13-ps pulses at 999 nm wavelength without a pulse compressor. Simultaneous lasing at 999 nm and 1024 nm, respectively, was demonstrated, which could be used for different frequency generation in the THz region.

Ytterbium (Yb$$^{3+}$$) doped gain media are one of promising laser materials for the next generation of diode-pumped high-power lasers. Yb-doped media have several advantages. It has wide absorption bandwidth, the low quantum defect, and the simple electronic structure. Yb:KY(WO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ (Yb:KYW) and Yb:KG(WO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ (Yb:KGW) have a large absorption and wide emission cross section, broad emission spectral range, and high thermal conductivity, yielding a high repetition-rate, high-energy, sub-picosecond pulses. However, multi-millijoule-class Yb:KYW or Yb:KGW lasers have not yet been reported so far, excepting a massive, joule-class Ti:sapphire laser pumped Yb:KGW regenerative amplifier. So, We developed a compact diode-pumped, cryogenically-cooled chirped-pulse Yb:KYW regenerative amplifier. An amplified pulse with an energy of 5.5 mJ and a high optical conversion efficiency of $$sim$$14% is achieved. Regenerative pulse shaping is also used to counter gain narrowing during amplification.

A diode-pumped, cryogenic-cooled Yb:YAG regenerative amplifier utilizing gain-narrowing has been developed. A 1.2-ns chirped-seed pulse was amplified and compressed in the regenerative amplifier, simultaneously, which generated a 35-ps pulse with $$sim$$8-mJ of energy without a pulse compressor. Second-harmonics of the amplified pulse was used to pump picosecond two-color optical parametric amplification.

We have demonstrated optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification by using a diode-pumped Yb:YLF CPA laser system as a pump source and achieved an ultra-broadband amplification of over 200-nm supporting a 12.6-fs duration (3.7 optical cycles) in spite of being operated around degeneracy. By using a two-stage OPCPA with a higher-energy pump pulse, it should be able to produce a terawatt-class, few-cycle laser pulse without complexly and enlarging the system size. Such a laser is useful for the generation of attosecond pulse generation in the xuv region as well as other high field applications.

Ultrarelativistic electron generation during the intense, ultrashort laser pulse interaction with clusters

Collimated relativistic electrons up to 58 MeV with an electron charge of 2.1 nC were generated by the interaction of intense laser pulses with the Ar cluster target at the laser intensity of 3.5$$times$$10$$^{19}$$W/cm$$^{2}$$. The resulting spectrum does not fit a Maxwellian distribution, but is well described by a two-temperature Maxwellian, which indicates two mechanisms of the electron acceleration. Two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate an important role of clusters. The higher energy electrons are injected when they are expelled from the clusters by the laser pulse field. They then gain their energy during the direct acceleration by the laser pulse, whose phase velocity in the underdense plasma is larger than speed of light in vacuum. The lower energy electrons, which are injected during the plasma wave breaking, are accelerated by the wakefield.

A model that solves simultaneously both the electron and atomic kinetics was used to generate synthetic He$$_alpha$$ X-ray spectra to characterize a high intensity ultrashort laser driven Ar cluster target experiment. In particular, level populations were obtained from a detailed collisional-radiative model where collisional rates were computed from a time varying electron distribution function obtained from the solution of the zero dimensional Boltzmann equation. In addition, aparticle-in-cell simulation was used to model the laser interaction with the cluster target and provided the initial electron energy distribution function (EEDF) for the Boltzmann solver. This study suggests that the high density plasma contribution to the time-integrated He$$_alpha$$ spectrum was in a highly non-equilibrium state in both the EEDF and the ion level populations and provides a prediction of 5.7 ps for the average cluster integrity time for this high density state.

In this work, we present a model that solves self-consistently the electron and atomic kinetics to characterize highly non-equilibrium plasmas, in particular for those systems where both the electron distribution function is far from Maxwellian and the evolution of the ion level populations are dominated by time dependent atomic kinetics. In this model, level populations are obtained from a detailed collisional-radiative model where collision rates are computed from a time varying electron distribution function obtained from the solution of the zero-dimensional Boltzmann equation. The Boltzmann collision term includes the effects of electron-electron collisions, electron collisional ionization, excitation and de-excitation. An application for He$$_alpha$$ spectra from a short pulse laser irradiated argon cluster target will be shown to illustrate the results of our model.

An improvement of laser-focused peak intensity has been achieved in a JAERI 100-TW Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplifier chain with a feedback controlled adaptive optics system operating at a 10 Hz repetition rate. The Strehl ratio was enhanced to 0.8 by means of a Bimorph deformable mirror with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. Measurements of optical parameters of the laser pulse and an experimental tunneling ionization yield of helium have practically confirmed focusing to ultra-relativistic intensities of over 10$$^{20}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$ within 16 % accuracy.
