A set of technology, including acid dissolving, has to be established for the analysis of content of elements/nuclides in the fuel debris samples. In this project, a blind test was performed for the purpose of clarifying the current level of analytical accuracy and establishing the alternative methods in case that the insoluble residue remains. Overall composition of the simulated fuel debris (homogenized powder having a specific composition) were quantitatively determined in the four analytical institutions in Japan by using their own dissolving and analytical techniques. The merit and drawback for each technique were then evaluated, based on which a tentative flow of the analyses of fuel debris was constructed.

The in-vessel gamma dose rate was measured in the experimental fast reactor Joyo to evaluate the activation of reactor structural components and the radiation exposure of the fiber scope used for in-vessel visual inspection. The measurement system, which requires a wide sensitivity range and high durability in a high-temperature environment, was specifically developed for use in the sodium cooled fast reactor. Using this system, the in-vessel gamma dose rate with cooling times of 450 and 720 days after reactor shutdown was measured in Joyo, which has been operated for 71,000 hours over approximately 30 years. The gamma dose rate was calculated using QAD-CGGP2 code with the gamma source intensity obtained by the ORIGEN2 code. The neutron flux used as input to the ORIGEN2 was evaluated by the Joyo dosimetry method. The ratio between the calculated and experimental values ranged from 1.1 to 2.4, confirming the accuracy of gamma dose rate and component activation calculation.

Anion-exchange behavior of the group-5 elements Nb and Ta, and their pseudo homologue Pa in HF and HF/HNO$$_{3}$$ solutions was investigated by a batch method to find suitable conditions for the anion-exchange experiment of element 105 (Dubnium, Db). We determined distribution coefficients of those elements on the anion-exchange resin as a function of the F$$^{-}$$ and NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ concentrations. Clearly different anion-exchange behavior was observed among these elements. Based on the results, we discuss the fluoro-complex formation of each element and suggest experimental conditions for the study of fluoride complexation of Db.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

A review is given on the startup of the superheavy element (SHE) chemistry at RIKEN. A gas-jet transport system for the SHE chemistry has been coupled to the gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS at the RIKEN Linear Accelerator. The performance of the system was appraised using $$^{206}$$Fr and $$^{245}$$Fm produced in the $$^{169}$$Tm($$^{40}$$Ar,3${it n}$)$$^{206}$$Fr and $$^{208}$$Pb($$^{40}$$Ar,3${it n}$)$$^{245}$$Fm reactions, respectively. The $$alpha$$ particles of $$^{206}$$Fr and $$^{245}$$Fm separated with GARIS and transported by the gas-jet were identified with a rotating wheel system for $$alpha$$ spectrometry under desired low background condition. The high gas-jet efficiencies over 80% were independent of the beam intensities up to 2 particle $$mu$$A. A gas-jet coupled target system for the production of SHEs was also installed on the beam line of the RIKEN K70 AVF cyclotron. The gas-jet transport of $$^{255}$$No and $$^{261}$$Rf produced in the $$^{238}$$U($$^{22}$$Ne,5${it n}$)$$^{255}$$No and $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{18}$$O,5${it n}$)$$^{261}$$Rf reactions, respectively, was conducted for the future chemical studies of $$^{265}$$Sg via the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{22}$$Ne, 5${it n}$)$$^{265}$$Sg reaction.
