It is challenging to clearly distinguish the impacts of the optical field and collisional ionization in the evolution of the charge state of a plasma produced when matter interacts with high-intensity laser pulses. In this work, time-dependent calculations of plasma kinetics are used to show that it is possible only when low-density gaseous targets with sufficiently small clusters are used. In the case of Ar plasma, the upper limit of the cluster radius was estimated to be $$R_0 = 0.1 mu$$m.

This paper provides an overview of plant system studies to establish a common technical view for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor concept between France and Japan based on ASTRID600 and the new concept with downsized output called ASTRID150. One of important issues on a reactor structure design is to enhance seismic resistance to be tolerable against strong earthquake such that postulated in Japan. A concept of High Frequency Design is shared, and the design options related to HFD have been examined and design recommendations are established. In addition, this paper include results of studies for a steam generator, a decay heat removal system, a fuel handling system and a containment vessel.

Development of a method for positron annihilation lifetime measurement in thin polyethylene films using a Na-22 source

Positron annihilation lifetime measurements were performed on polyethylene films with thickness of 15$$mu$$m - 2000$$mu$$m using a Na-22 positron source enclosed in a Kapton film. For thin films, some positrons will pass through the film and annihilate behind it. Using a single film in a commercial anti-coincidence system, by placing an annealed stainless steel (SUS304) cover behind the sample, it is possible to sufficiently measure the long lifetime ortho-positronium (o-Ps) component even in thin films. Additionally, calculated intensities of the o-Ps component determined from the estimated film transmittance agreed well with the measured values. Furthermore, by applying this method to uniaxially stretched UHMWPE, we were able to observe structural changes owing to the stretching consistent with shorter measured o-Ps lifetime and increased o-Ps intensity.

The Generation IV international Forum (GIF) has led international collaborative efforts to develop six next generation nuclear energy systems, such as Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR), Lead-cooled Fast Reactor (LFR), Gas-cooled Fast Reactor (GFR), Molten Salt Reactor (MSR), Supercritical Water-cooled Reactor (SCWR), and Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR), which have superior characteristics for the Safety and Reliability, Economics, Sustainability, Proliferation Resistance and Physical Protection. Some systems are already in the Demonstration Phase and the commercialization of the system in 2030s, which is the target of GIF, comes into sight.

A combination of a petawatt laser and nuclear physics techniques can crucially facilitate the measurement of exotic nuclei properties. With numerical simulations and laser-driven experiments we show prospects for the Laser-driven Exotic Nuclei extraction-acceleration method proposed in [M. Nishiuchi et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 033107 (2015)]: a femtosecond petawatt laser, irradiating a target bombarded by an external ion beam, extracts from the target and accelerates to few GeV highly charged short-lived heavy exotic nuclei created in the target via nuclear reactions.

Experimental demonstration of multi-charged heavy ion acceleration from the interaction between the ultra-intense short pulse laser system and the metal target is presented. The laser pulse of $$<$$10 J laser energy, 36 fs pulse width, and the contrast level of $$sim$$ 10$$^{10}$$ from 200 TW class Ti:sapphire J-KAREN laser system at JAEA is used in the experiment. Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated. This is achieved by the high intensity laser field of $$sim$$10$$^{21}$$Wcm$$^{-2}$$ interacting with the solid density target. The demonstrated iron ions with high charge to mass ratio (Q/M) is difficult to be achieved by the conventional heavy ion source technique in the accelerators.

JAEA, JAPC and MFBR have been conducted design study for the Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (JSFR), which is a design concept aiming at future commercial use as sustainable electric power source. Since 2011, in order to contribute to the development of safety design criteria (SDC) and safety design guideline (SDG), which include the lesson learned from the TEPCO's Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plants accident, in the frame work of generation IV international forum (GIF), the design study is focusing on the design measures against sever external events such as earthquake and tsunami. At the same time, the design study is going into detail and paying much attention to the maintenance and repair to make surer its feasibility. This paper summarizes the design concept of the demonstration version of JSFR in which progress of design work was incorporated.

Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated with a 200 TW femtosecond high-intensity laser irradiating a micron-thick Al foil with Fe impurity on the surface. An energetic low-emittance high-density beam of heavy ions with a large charge-to-mass ratio can be obtained, which is useful for many applications, such as a compact radio isotope source in combination with conventional technology.

This paper reviews the development of a high-contrast high-intensity petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser for research on high field science. We discuss in detail the design, performance and characterization of the laser. We also describe the on-going upgrade of the laser system and some applications for the laser in relativistic dominated laser-matter interactions.

High power laser developments with femtosecond to nanosecond pulse durations for laser shock science and engineering

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

We demonstrate a new ion diagnosis method for high energy ions by utilizing a combination of a single CR-39 detector and plastic plates, which enables to detect high energy ions beyond the detection threshold limit of the CR-39. This detection method coupled with a magnetic spectrometer is applied to identify high energy ions of 50 MeV per nucleon in laser-driven ion acceleration experiments using cluster-gas targets.

A new diagnosis method for high energy ions utilizing a single CR-39 detector mounted on plastic plates is demonstrated to identify the presence of the high energy component beyond the CR-39's detection threshold limit. On irradiation with a 25 MeV per nucleon He ion beam from conventional rf-accelerators, a large number of etch pits having elliptical opening shapes are observed on the rear surface. Detailed investigations reveal that these etch pits are created by heavy ions inelastically backscattered from the plastic plates. This ion detection method is applied to laser-driven ion acceleration experiments using cluster-gas targets, and acceleration of ions with energies up to 50 MeV per nucleon are identified.

Proton acceleration to 40 MeV using a high intensity, high contrast optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification/Ti:sapphire hybrid laser system

Using high contrast (10$$^{10}$$:1) and high intensity (10$$^{21}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$) laser pulse with the duration of 40 fs from OPCPA/Ti:Sapphire laser, a 40 MeV proton bunch is obtained, which is a record for laser pulse with energy less than 10 J. The efficiency for generation of protons with kinetic energy above 15 MeV is 0.1%.

This report compiles data set of the groundwater chemistry obtained at Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) between the fiscal year 2004 and the fiscal year 2007. These data includes groundwater chemistry of inflow in the shafts and sampled groundwater in the boreholes, which drilled from sub-stages of MIU and from surface (MSB-2, MSB-4, and MIZ-1). Basic information (e.g. sampling location, sampling date, sampling method, analytical method) are also described in terms of quality control and traceability.

Interfacial properties of HIP joints between beryllium and reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel

In this work, the interfacial properties of Be-reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel (RAFMs) joints were investigated for the first wall of an ITER test blanket module (TBM). The joints were produced by the solid state hot isostatic pressing (HIP) method. Chromium (Cr) was used as a diffusion barrier with a thickness of 1 micron or 10 microns, formed by plasma vapor deposition on the Be surface. The HIPping was conducted at 1023 K and 1233 K. The temperatures are standard normalizing and tempering temperatures of F82H. EPMA showed the Cr layer effectively worked as a diffusion barrier at 1023 K. However, for the F82H/Be interface which underwent HIP at 1233 K followed by tempering a Be rich layer was formed. Bend tests revealed that a thin Cr layer and low temperature HIP is preferable.

The master curve (MC) method works when the transition fracture toughness values follow the MC, and once the value is scaled properly, the MC is usually independent of the type of steel or the type of test specimen. This method is very much depending on the assumption that the fracture initiation points are homogeneously distributed and its initiation mechanism is independent on test temperature. The reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steels (RAFs), such as F82H (Fe-8Cr-2W-0.2V-0.04Ta), has Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ Ta(V,Ti)O composite inclusions, or simple Ta(V)O inclusions, and shows inhomogeneous distribution, and it was revealed that that RAFs which contain Ta could initiate the facture in the different mechanism at lower temperature as the composite inclusions become fragile, and this should be considered when the toughness measured with small size toughness specimen which is usually tested at lower temperature.

This paper presents recent achievements of the research activities for the TBM being developed in JAEA, focusing on the pebble bed of the tritium breeder materials and tritium behaviour. For the breeder material, the chemical stability of Li$$_2$$TiO$$_3$$ has been improved by Li$$_2$$O additives. In order to analyze the pebble bed behaviour, thermo-mechanical properties of the Li$$_2$$TiO$$_3$$ pebble bed has been experimentally obtained. In order to verify nuclear properties of the pebble bed, the activation foil method has been proposed and a preliminary experiment has been conducted. For the tritium behaviour, the chemical densified coating method has been well developed and tritium recovery system has been modified taking account of the design change of the TBM.

A diversified or modular power source is attractive since it requires a low construction cost per unit and can be demonstrated in small scale experimental facilities. In this study, a new metal fuel sodium cooled reactor with 300MW electric has been developed enhancing cost reduction. And economical potential at demonstration stage with first of a kind (FOAK) is emphasized. A minimum configuration with a compact reactor vessel, a one-loop main cooling system and a simple fuel handling system is adopted enhancing cost reduction. For safety evaluation, reliability of the one-loop main cooling system has been shown by pipe-break transient analyses. Besides, construction cost of a demonstration plant with a first reactor and a small reprocessing and fuel fabrication facility is also evaluated. A major feature of the present concept is that the demonstration reactor and facilities can be directly appropriated for first commercial modules and the power plant can easily increase its capacity adding reactor and electrorefiner modules. A fast reactor cycle commercialization scenario using the present concept is thought to give low R&D or investment risk and high cost performance since the total demonstration plant cost is relatively small and the facilities are directly appropriated to commercial use.

Various conceptual design studies of sodium cooled small reactor have been performed in the feasibility study. In FY2005 study, a 300MWe modular reactor which adopts metal-fueled and 1 loop cooling system in order to pursues economical competitiveness was investigated. Transient analyses were performed to show core safety under the large pipe break accident that was found to be the severest accident in case of a 1 loop cooling system. From the analysis results, it was showed a possibility to maintain the core safety without the reactor scram. Transient analyses of the natural circulation decay heat removal system were also performed, and it was showed a possibility to maintain the core safety after the reactor scram. The in-vessel storage (IVS) was adopt to eliminate the ex-vessel storage and the design of the distribution flow adjustment device in IVS is studied. It was showed that the IVS could be introduced without modifying in the reactor design in FY2004. The rationalization of the fuel handling system is investigated taking advantage of co-location plant in which the reactor, the recycle plant and the fuel fabrication plant are co-located in a site. As a result of rationalization, the volume of the reactor building becomes 0.85 times as much as that of the design in FY2004.
