Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

We introduce Cs-free mineralization (CFM) for Cs removal and reuse of radioactive-contaminated soil in Fukushima and report recent work conducted in the BL27A beamline in Photon Factory. In this work, we investigated compositional and structural changes of Cs-sorbed weathered biotite (WB) before and after heating treatment with addition of NaCl-CaCl$$_{2}$$ salts under low-pressure condition, to study Cs desorption mechanism from clay minerals. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy clarified that almost all Cs and K were removed with the salts at 700 $$^{circ}$$C. On the other hand, Ca increased with heating temperature. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis clarified that phase transitions from WB to some Ca-rich silicate minerals, e.g., augite, were caused by the heating treatment with the salt. Based on these results, CFM is proposed for Cs removal utilizing the mechanism in which large monovalent cations are discharged with accompanying the phase transition. We also discuss the role of Cl in this reaction showing chemical bonding change of Cl observed using X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the early stage of the chemical reaction.

After the Fukushima nuclear plant accident, radiocesium was strongly fixed to clay minerals in the soil. Some dry methods with heating are being developed to remove radiocesium from the soil. In this work, we propose a new dry method that combines heat treatment in vacuum and molten salts to reduce the processing temperature in dry methods. Vermiculite saturated with non-radioactive Cs was heated in vacuum, and Cs contents in the vermiculite were compared before and after heating using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Approximately 40% of cesium were removed by heating at 800$$^{circ}$$C for three minutes when only vermiculite was heated. Approximately 70% of cesium were removed by heating at 450$$^{circ}$$C for three minutes when vermiculite was heated with NaCl/CaCl$$_{2}$$ mixed salts. Based on these results, this method is expected to reduce temperature and increase efficiency on dry methods for cesium removal from clay minerals.

The neutron-rich nucleus $$^{50}$$Ar is produced by the fragmentation reactions of $$^{54}$$Ca, $$^{55}$$Sc, and $$^{56}$$Ti at the RIBF facility in RIKEN, and its deexcited $$gamma$$ rays are observed for the first time. The first $$2^+$$ level in $$^{50}$$Ar is identified to lie at 1178(18)keV from the most intense $$gamma$$-ray spectra. This experimental data, together with the systematics of the $$2^+$$ levels for surrounding nuclei, is analyzed with large-scale shell-model calculations. Consequently, the $$N=32$$ sub-shell gap in $$^{50}$$Ar is equivalent to that of $$^{52}$$Ca, thus making the $$2^+$$ level in $$^{50}$$Ar higher than that of $$^{48}$$Ar. The shell-model calculation also predicts that the $$N=34$$ sub-shell gap enhances in going from Ca to Ar, which will be verified by forthcoming experiments for $$^{52}$$Ar.

The JMTR has been refurbished to restart operation in FY2011. The restarted JMTR plays roles of (1) measures for long-term operation of light water reactors, (2) improvement in scientific technique, (3) increase of industrial use, (4) training of human resources, etc. It is needed to operate the restarted JMTR safety and stably and maintain high available factor (50$$sim$$70%) because of increasing of irradiation utilization demand. In this report, measures for training of reactor operators, organization for operating, etc were proposed to operate reactor safety and smoothly. And also reactor operation procedure was examined to improve available factor up to world level for materials testing reactor. As a result, it was turned out to be possible to realize stably 210 days operation per year (available factor: 60%).

The creep test under irradiation with thermal gradient for the cylindrical carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites (c/c composite) are carried out in the Japan Material Testing Reactor (JMTR). This report described 4-items; first item is design/evaluation of the capsule for the irradiation test, second is before irradiation measurements for the residual strain due to manufactured cylindrical c/c composite, and third is also before irradiation measurements of the distance between 2-holes of predrilled in the specimen and last item is examination of analysis for the irradiation creep with thermal gradient by VIENUS Code.
