Charge radii in modern macroscopic-microscopic mass models; The Role of dynamic quadrupole deformation

For the nuclei where axially asymmetric or reflection-asymmetric shapes are expected, we calculated the nuclear charge radii by using the Finite Range Droplet Model. As a result, we found the agreement between the experimental and theoretical radii becomes better when these asymmetries are taken into account in the model calculation. In addition, we developed a method to empirically calculate the charge radii of even-even nuclei. This method is based on the Finite Range Liquid Drop Model, and use the experimental ${it B}$(${it E}$2) value or the excitation energy of the first excited 2$$^{+}$$ state as input parameters.

We show that the charge radii of reflection-asymmetric nuclei calculated in the frame of the finite-range droplet model are in better agreement with measured charge radii when reflection asymmetry is taken into account. However discrepancies between experimental and calculated changes in mean square charge radii still remain for some isotopic chains. These discrepancies can not be removed by empirically including dynamic contributions to the quadrupole deformation.

We show that the charge radii of axially asymmetric nuclei calculated in the frame of finite-range droplet model are in better agreement with measured charge radii when axial asymmetry is taken into account. This improvement is mainly the result of a new set of ground-state quadrupole deformations $$beta$$$$_{2}$$, generated when masses are calculated including axial asymmetry, and to a much lesser degree due to the inclusion of the axial asymmetry in the calculation of the charge radii itself.

We report measurements of the hyperfine structure constants of $$^{131}$$La (N=74) as an initial step to further exploring the neutron deficient rare-earth region where a sudden onset of nuclear deformation is predicted theoretically around N=74. This work is an extension of our earlier off-line experiments on $$^{135,137-139}$$La to on-line laser spectroscopy. The radioactive isotope $$^{131}$$La (T$$_{1/2}$$=59 min) was produced by means of a spallation reaction using a proton beam from TRIUMF cyclotron. The hyperfine spectra were observed by using the method of collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy. From the obtained hyperfine constants, the nuclear moments of $$^{131}$$La were derived. In order to arrive at an understanding of the nuclear structure of $$^{131}$$La, we have carried out particle triaxial-rotor calculations. The results from the calculation reproduce well the experimental values when a triaxial shape is assumed for $$^{131}$$La.

Calculation of nuclear charge radii by using the mass models taking axially asymmetric deformation into consideration

Nuclear charge radii have been calculated by using the parameters for mass calculation with Finite Range Droplet Model. The deformation parameters were taken from the recent Finite Range Liquid Drop Model calculation by M$"o$ller which takes axially asymmetric deformation into consideration. By comparing the obtained theoretical radii with the experimental ones for many nuclei, it has been found that the agreement is improved.
