MIRS is built at LESIA-Paris Observatory in collaboration with four other French laboratories, collaboration and financial support of CNES and close collaboration with JAXA and MELCO. The instrument is designed to fully accomplish MMX's scientific and measurement objectives. MIRS will remotely provide near-infrared spectral maps of Phobos and Deimos containing compositional diagnostic spectral features that will be used to analyze the surface composition and to support the sampling site selection. MIRS will also study Mars atmosphere, in particular to spatial and temporal changes such as clouds, dust and water vapor.

In order to ensure the integrity of the reactor pressure vessel in the long term, it is necessary to understand the effects of irradiation on the materials. In this study, irradiation-induced dislocation loops were observed in neutron-irradiated reactor pressure vessel specimens during annealing using our newly developed WB-STEM. It was confirmed that the proportion of loops increased with increasing annealing temperature. We also succeeded in observing the phenomenon that two loops collide into a loop. Moreover, a phenomenon in which dislocation loops decorate dislocations was also observed, and the mechanism was successfully explained by molecular dynamics simulation.

Times Cited Count:18 Percentile:67.26(Physics, Multidisciplinary)Specific-heat experiments on single crystals of the = 1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(CHN)(NO)(ClO) (NTENP) have been performed in magnetic fields applied both parallel and perpendicular to the spin chains. We have found for the parallel field configuration that the magnetic specific heat () is proportional to temperature () above a critical field , at which the energy gap vanishes, in a temperature region above that of the long-range ordered state. The ratio = increases as the magnetic field approaches from above. The data are in good quantitative agreement with the prediction of the =1 conformal field theory in conjunction with the velocity of the excitations calculated by a numerical diagonalization, providing conclusive evidence for a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.

We developed a weak-beam scanning transmission electron microscopy (WB-STEM) by installing a novel beam selector, annular detector, a high-speed CCD camera and imaging filter in a camera chamber of an aberration corrected electron microscope. In-situ observation confirmed that the newly-developed WB-STEM has improved the ability to observe the dynamic behavior of dislocation loops. In addition, we performed a numerical simulation of dislocation loop behavior using molecular dynamics, and confirmed that the experimental results were well explained by the theoretical analysis. Therefore, this WB-STEM is expected to be useful for understanding the embrittlement mechanism of nuclear materials such as reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels.
