Remediating toxic ion contamination is crucial for protecting human health and the environment. This study aimed to provide a powerful strategy for effectively utilizing bone waste from the food production and preparation industries for removal of toxic ions. Here, we show that immersing pig bone in NaHCO$$_{3}$$ solution produced a carbonated nanohydroxyapatites (C-NHAP). The C-NHAP exhibited high adsorptivity for Sr$$^{2+}$$, Cd$$^{2+}$$, Pb$$^{2+}$$, and Cu$$^{2+}$$. The strontium adsorptivity was about 250 and 4,500 times higher than that of normal bone and synthetic HAP, respectively. The C-NHAP is an eco-friendly, high-performance material that is simple to prepare and should be useful for tackling problems of food waste disposal and environmental pollution.

The structures of Cs adsorption on montmorillonite were investigated by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The NMR spectra of Cs adsorbed on montmorillonite samples were measured under different Cs contents and relative humidity levels. NMR parameters were evaluated by the first principle calculations in order to identify the relationship between adsorbed Cs structures and NMR parameters. The comparisons between experimental and theoretical NMR spectra revealed that Cs is preferentially adsorbed at sites near Al for low Cs substituted montmorillonites, and that non-hydrated Cs present in partially Cs substituted samples, even after being hydrated under high relative humidity.

Alternative splicing is a molecular mechanism that produces multiple proteins from a single gene, and is thought to produce variety in proteins translated from a limited number of genes. Here we analyzed how alternative splicing produced variety in protein structure and function, by using human full-length cDNAs, on the assumption that all of the alternatively spliced mRNAs were translated to proteins. We found that the length of alternatively spliced amino acid sequences, in most cases, fell into a size shorter than that of average protein domain. We evaluated comprehensively the presumptive three-dimensional structures of the alternatively spliced products to assess the impact of alternative splicing on gene function. We found that more than half of the products encoded proteins which were involved in signal transduction, transcription and translation, and more than half of alternatively spliced regions comprised interaction sites between proteins and their binding partners, including substrates, DNA/RNA, and other proteins. Intriguingly, 67% of the alternatively spliced isoforms showed significant alterations to regions of the protein structural core, which likely resulted in large conformational change. Based on those findings, we speculate that there are a large number of cases that alternative splicing modulates protein networks through significant alteration in protein conformation.

In order to investigate correlation between a conduction band offset and the interface characteristics of SiO$$_{2}$$/SiC structure, synchrotron radiation XPS have been conducted for the SiO$$_{2}$$/SiC structure formed by sputtering and thermal oxidation. In the SiO$$_{2}$$/SiC interface formed by sputtering, higher oxidation number components decreased and the total amount of suboxides was small comparing with thermal oxidation. Furthermore, an SiO$$_{2}$$ photoemission peak of the sputtering sample was shifted to higher binding energy side by 0.24 eV, and a conduction band offset was smaller comparing with the thermal oxide sample. The SiO$$_{2}$$ band gap was evaluated from an O1s energy loss spectrum, and the valence band offset was also obtained from a valence band photoemission spectrum. The conduction band offset for the sputtering sample was smaller by 0.35 eV comparing with the thermal oxide sample.

Effect of SiO$$_{2}$$/4H-SiC interface passivalon on energy band alignment between SiO$$_{2}$$ and 4H-SiC

A balence band off-set of SiO$$_{2}$$/SiC interface, which affects the reliability of SiC-MOS devises, was evaluated by synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy. An SiO$$_{2}$$ film formed by sputtering deposition showed smaller off-set than that of thermal oxide film. Interface defects, originate in carbon impurities, and balence band off-set of thermal SiO$$_{2}$$/SiC interface were decreased by annealing in the high temperature hydrogen gas.

We are developing remote in-situ analysis by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for simple in-situ screening analysis of fuel debris in the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. For various application scenarios, microchip laser based LIBS for ultra-long distance analysis, microwave assisted LIBS for signal enhancement, and long/short double pulse laser LIBS for water-containing samples are developing as the fiber-optic LIBS system. To have the reliability, valuation with nuclear fuel materials and spent fuel, and radiation resistance test by $$^{60}$$Co irradiation will be planed. As a challenging trial, a development of Machine learning technique has introduced for automatically analysis of LIBS spectra.
