The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

The centrifuge which has the subtlety information concerning the nuclear nonproliferation used for uranium enrichment technical development exists in the uranium enrichment facilities of Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency. This centrifugal is performing separation processing of the radioactive material adhering to the surface of parts by wet decontamination of ultrasonic cleaning by dilute sulfuric acid and water, etc. By removing the uranium contained in waste fluid, generated sludge reduces activity concentration. And the possibility of reduction of sludge processing is examined. For this reason, from the 2007 fiscal year, Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate and cooperation are aimed at, and development of the extraction separation technology of the "uranium" by the emulsion flow method is furthered. The test equipment using the developed emulsion flow method was tested. And dilute sulfuric acid and water were used for the examination as actual waste fluid. The result checked whether the various performances in Basic test carried out in Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate would be obtained.

Progress in development and design of the neutral beam injector for JT-60SA

Neutral beam (NB) injectors for JT-60 Super Advanced (JT-60SA) have been designed and developed. Twelve positive-ion-based and one negative-ion-based NB injectors are allocated to inject 30 MW D$$^{0}$$ beams in total for 100 s. Each of the positive-ion-based NB injector is designed to inject 1.7 MW for 100s at 85 keV. A part of the power supplies and magnetic shield utilized on JT-60U are upgraded and reused on JT-60SA. To realize the negative-ion-based NB injector for JT-60SA where the injection of 500 keV, 10 MW D$$^{0}$$ beams for 100s is required, R&Ds of the negative ion source have been carried out. High-energy negative ion beams of 490-500 keV have been successfully produced at a beam current of 1-2.8 A through 20% of the total ion extraction area, by improving voltage holding capability of the ion source. This is the first demonstration of a high-current negative ion acceleration of $$>$$1 A to 500 keV. The design of the power supplies and the beamline is also in progress. The procurement of the acceleration power supply starts in 2010.

The separation of heat-generating nuclide (Cs) from high-level liquid wastes is important in relation to the waste volume reduction. The present paper deals with the preparation of Cs-selective ion-exchangers (silica gels loaded with ammonium molybdophosphate, AMP-SG), uptake properties and characterization. The AMP-SG exhibited large distribution coefficient above 10$$^{3}$$ cm$$^{3}$$/g for Cs even in the 2-3 M HNO$$_{3}$$ solution. The uptake isotherm of Cs followed a Langmuir-type equation, and the maximum Cs capacity was 0.24 mmol/g. The breakthrough curves of Cs had S-shaped profile, and the 94% of Cs adsorbed on the AMP-SG column was eluted with 5 M NH$$_{4}$$NO$$_{3}$$ - 1 M HNO$$_{3}$$ solution. The eluent containing ammonium salt is suitable for both the recovery of Cs and the regeneration of AMP-SG. The precise chromatographic separation of Cs and Rb was also accomplished by using mixed solutions of NH$$_{4}$$NO$$_{3}$$ and HNO$$_{3}$$.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

A Novel non-intrusive resistance thermometer for sodium in fast breeder reactor

A non-intrusive temperature sensing system is proposed. It is developed for temperature measurement of liquid sodium coolant in fast breeder reactor. Liquid sodium is used as coolant due to high heat flux density in the reactor core. In this paper, the results of our feasibility study by 2-dimensional numerical simulation, small size experimental test done by Japan Atomic Energy Agency Oarai Institute, and theoretical analysis are described. The basic principle of temperature measurement is resistant thermometry of liquid sodium. The resistivity of liquid sodium is quite lower than that of the stainless steel (SUS304), which is used in the pipe wall. The resistivity temperature coefficient of liquid sodium(0.337%/deg) is higher than that of stainless steel(0.0865%/deg). If we feed electric current perpendicular to the axis of flow pipe, the current penetrates the pipe wall and flow across the liquid. The current concentrates the liquid sodium, only small portion of the current flows along the pipe wall. The electric potential distribution is almost dominated by resistivity of sodium. The potential distribution can be measured along the out side of the pipe wall. The potential difference between two fixed points on the pipe wall indicates the resistivity of sodium So the sodium temperature can be measured by potential difference. Measurement accuracy of $$pm$$5$$^{circ}$$C is obtained in experimental tests. Better estimation data are obtained by theoretical analysis using three dimensional model.

The hard vinyl chloride ventilation duct of the local ventilation equipment for used centrifuge decommissioning system had fractured despite the ventilation stopping. As a result of investigation of the causes, it was found that negative pressure in the isolated duct with the damper valve exceeded buckling limit because the air sampling of air-sniffer was not stopped. For experimental proof of this, we investigated of attained negative pressure, analyzed buckling stress and confirmed that hard vinyl chloride ventilation duct was fractured quickly by negative pressure buckling with the mock-up examination device.
