In order to realize superconducting magnet system with high radiation resistance, it is necessary to develop electrical insulator with high radiation resistance because the electrical insulator is made of organic materials whose radiation resistance is inferior to that of inorganic materials. We developed a glass fiber reinforced plastic with bismaleimide-triazine resin. The developed material showed excellent radiation resistance; the material evolved gases of 510 mol/g and maintained flexural strength of 640MPa (90% of initial value).

In order to examine the feasibility of the experiment, we measured the background rates of different detector candidate sites, which are located at the third floor of the MLF, using a detector consisting of plastic scintillators with a fiducial mass of 500 kg. The gammas and neutrons induced by the beam as well as the backgrounds from the cosmic rays were measured, and the results are described in this article.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

The master curve (MC) method works when the transition fracture toughness values follow the MC, and once the value is scaled properly, the MC is usually independent of the type of steel or the type of test specimen. This method is very much depending on the assumption that the fracture initiation points are homogeneously distributed and its initiation mechanism is independent on test temperature. The reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steels (RAFs), such as F82H (Fe-8Cr-2W-0.2V-0.04Ta), has AlO Ta(V,Ti)O composite inclusions, or simple Ta(V)O inclusions, and shows inhomogeneous distribution, and it was revealed that that RAFs which contain Ta could initiate the facture in the different mechanism at lower temperature as the composite inclusions become fragile, and this should be considered when the toughness measured with small size toughness specimen which is usually tested at lower temperature.

Arylsulfonic acid esters and triphenylsulfonium salts were used as an EB-sensitive acid generator; the acid (H) allows a chromic reaction with rhodamine B base (RB) and 4,4'-bis(dimethylamino)benzhydrol (BH) to be triggered. Upon EB irradiation, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films consisting of RB or BH and acid generators exhibited a characteristic absorption band with max at 560 and at 612 nm, respectively, and an isosbestic point. These spectral changes clearly indicate that colorless chromic dyes in PMMA are transformed selectively to the colored form. The color imaging of these films was performed by electron beam direct writing (EBDW) with a 50 nm diameter beam to form 100 - 1000 nm line and space patterns and was evaluated by optical and confocal laser microscopy. EBDW on the acid chromic polymer films, especially for BH, yielded clear color imaging of 100 - 200 nm line and space patterns with a dose of only 10 C/cm. The confocal laser microscopy gave thinner lines than the laser wavelength (632.8 nm), probably because of the large change in refractive index of the patterned film induced by EB irradiation even with a low energy dose.

Our Japanese collaboration team is making efforts for realizing an ERL-based hard X-ray source. We report recent progress in our R&D efforts.

It turned out that Ta does not form MX precipitates, but it forms complex AlO;Ta(V,Ti)O inclusions, or simple Ta(V)O inclusions. The complex inclusions are rather dominant in the plate obtained from the bottom of the ingot, but not in the plate from the middle of the ingot. SEM observations also revealed that broken complex inclusions tended to be observed at the crack-initiation site. These results suggest that the scatter of toughness values is correlated with this microstructural inhomogeneity, as the MC method assumes the material has a homogeneous microstructure.

Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:13.04(Metallurgy & Metallurgical Engineering)Reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steels (RAFs), such as F82H (Fe-8Cr-2W-0.2V-0.04Ta-0.1C), are one of the leading candidates for structural materials of fusion reactors, and it is essential for RAFs R&D to assure its good toughness property for fusion application. In this study, the influence of Ti on impact property was studied based on microstructural analyses and charpy impact tests which were performed against general-purity F82H (0.004Ti-0.0060N) and high-purity F82H (0.001Ti- 0.0014N). In general-purity F82H, its impact property around DBTT showed both 100% brittle fracture and brittle-ductile, and this tendency is not appeared in high-purity F82H. SEM observation on those brittle fracture surfaces of general-purity F82H revealed the presence of AlO-Ta(V,Ti)O complex oxides at the fracture initiation point. The size distribution analyses of oxides suggest that the complex oxide in general-purity F82H showed a higher number density than in high-purity F82H. In addition to this, EDS analyses showed the complex oxides in general-purity F82H had a strong peak of Ti, but they were not detected in the oxide in high-purity F82H. These results suggest the influence of Ti on complex oxide formation which affects impact property.

EB irradiation of the acid-chromic polymer films induced acid generation from EBAG, resulting in color formation of the acid-chromic molecules (protonated forms). Nanoscale color imaging on the acid- chromic polymer films was carried out using EB scanning direct drawing. Clear color imaging of 200 nm square and 100 nm line/space patterns could be observed with a dose of only 50 C cm. Furthermore, the large EB-induced refractive index change of these films (0.013 at 632.8 nm) was observed in both TE and TM modes by an m-line method, which is sufficient to create an optical circuit.

The anion-exchangechromatographic behavior of Rf was investigated in 1.9-13.9 M hydrofluoric acid together with those of the group-4 elements Zr and Hf produced in the O-induced reactions on Ge and Gd targets, respectively. It was found that the adsorption behavior of Rf on anion-exchange resin is quite different from those of Zr and Hf, suggesting the influence of relativistic effect on the fluoride complexation of Rf.

A color forming performance for fabricating nanoscale patterned polymer films has been examined using electron beam direct writing (EBDW) techniques. Upon EB irradiation the poly(methyl methacrylate) film consisting of 3 wt% bis(dimethylamino)benzhydrol and the equimolar sulfonium salt has an absorption band at 560 nm, which is assigned to protonated benzhydrol. The appearance of the new band at 560 nm with an isosbestic point in the spectral changes of indicates the quantitative transformation from colorless benzhydrol to the protonated form. The film is then exposed with a raster scanning by EBDW. Upon EB irradiation they also undergo chemical changes to provide optical differentiation between the exposed and unexposed regions. The blue-colored line/space patterns of 100 - 200 nm with a dose of 10 C/cm are achieved.

Reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steels (RAFs), such as F82H (Fe-8Cr-2W-0.2V-0.04Ta-0.1C, in wt%), are one of the leading candidates for structural materials of fusion reactors. Impact property of F82H can be improved by adjusting the amount of tantalum or titanium concentration. On the other hand, it was reported by microstructure analyses of IEA steel that tantalum has a tendency to form oxides and causes a large dispersion of fracture toughness. In this study, the correlation between titanium or tantalum concentration and the impact property were reported focusing on difference in microstructure.
