Radiocarbon dating, tephrochronology, and geochemical signatures such as bromine (Br), iodine (I), total sulfur (TS), total organic carbon (TOC), and total nitrogen (TN) in a continuous sediment core (OG12-2) were applied to estimate past salinity change on the Lake Ogawara, Pacific coast of northeast Japan. Since the Lake Ogawara was the inner bay of the Pacific Ocean and became the brackish lake in the late Holocene, clarifying the past salinity change on the lake Ogawara could give us important insight into the past sea level changes of the Pacific Ocean. The core OG12-2 has two tephra layers, the Towada eruption and the Changbaishan eruption (B-Tm: AD 946). The age model for the core OG12-2 was established using the radiocarbon measurements of the plant residues in the core, also was constrained by the B-Tm tephra. Depletions of marine-derived elements (Br, I, and TS), from 88.4 to 64.2 mg/kg, 20.0 to 14.1 mg/kg, and 3.1 to 1.1 mass %, respectively, were observed in the layers with 2200-2000 cal BP. These results indicate paleosalinity changes from saline (inner bay) to brackish conditions within Lake Ogawara caused by sea level fluctuations during the late Holocene.

Europium-hydride EuH$$_{x}$$ exposed to high-pressure H$$_{2}$$ conditions has been found to exhibit structural and valence changes, $$Pnma$$ ($$x$$=2, divalent) $$rightarrow$$ $$P$$63/$$mmc$$ ($$x$$=2, 7.2-8.7 GPa) $$rightarrow$$ $$I$$4/$$m$$ ($$x$$$$>$$2, 8.7-9.7 GPa) $$rightarrow$$ $$I$$4/$$mmm$$ ($$x$$$$>$$2, 9.7 GPa-, trivalent). Having trivalent character and distorted cubic fcc structure, the $$I$$4/$$mmm$$ structure is the $$beta$$-phase which has been commonly observed for other rare-earth metal hydrides. Our study clearly demonstrates that EuH$$_{x}$$ is no longer an "irregular" member of the rare earth metal hydrides.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

A Neutron diffraction study of phase transition in lawsonite at high pressure

Lawsonite is a hydrous mineral which is considered as a main carrier of hydrogen in the subtucting slab. Previous single crystal X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction studies indicate that there exist two phase transitions at low temperature. A property of low temperature is sometimes considered to be equivalent to the behavior at high pressure, and some studies pointed out the possibility of transition at high pressure. To investigate the pressure response of hydrogen bond and phase transition in lawsonite, neutron diffraction experiment was conducted. High pressure and high temperature neutron diffraction experiment was conducted by 6-ram press at J-PARC MLF. Using 6-6 type anvil with TEL size of 10 mm, neutron diffraction pattern was corrected up to 6 GPa and 800$$^{circ}$$C. In addition, hydrostatic experiment at ambient pressure was conducted using Paris-Edinburgh press. New peak was observed at 1.83${AA}$ that indicates phase transition at high pressure.
