Crystallographic and/or magnetic properties of neutral and cationic uranium(IV) sandwiched phthalocyanine complexes

Neutral and cationic U(IV) sandwiched phthalocyanine (Pc) complexes were prepared. The neutral species, UPc$$_{2}$$, was obtained by the reaction of UCl$$_{4}$$] and phthalonitrile, and the [UPc$$_{2}$$][BF$$_{4}$$] crystals were grown by electrolysis. The structures of the complexes were determined crystallographically. A U(IV) ion has two $$5f$$ electrons, which carry a magnetic moment localized at the U sites, making the complex magnetically active. The magnetic susceptibility measurement of UPc$$_{2}$$ revealed that the system was paramagnetic with local magnetic moments down to 2 K, but these magnetic moments were suppressed, possibly by a ligand field effect. The paramagnetism was also confirmed by the magnetization curve without hysteresis. The cationic complex, [UPc$$_{2}$$][BF$$_{4}$$]] crystalized in a tetragonal structure with the space group $$P4nc$$, in which the UPc$$_{2}$$ molecules stacked along the tetragonal $$c$$-axis. The structure was similar to that of [LnPc$$_{2}$$][BF$$_{4}$$]], but with distinct disorder in the stacking plane. The stabilities of the crystal and molecular structures and the electronic configurations of UPc$$_{2}$$ and [UPc$$_{2}$$][BF$$_{4}$$]] were evaluated via the $$ab initio$$ calculations that included the multiconfigurational nature of the actinide element.

Direct energy conversion has been investigated using Ni/SiC Schottky junctions with the irradiation of monochromatized synchrotron X-rays simulating the gamma rays of $$^{237}$$Np (30 keV) and $$^{241}$$Am (60 keV). From current-voltage measurements, electrical energies were obtained for both kinds of gamma rays. The energy conversion efficiencies were found to reach up to $$sim$$1.6%, which is comparable to those of a few other semiconducting systems reported thus far. This result shows a possibility of energy recovery from nuclear wastes using the present system, judging from the radiation tolerant nature of SiC. Also, we found different conversion efficiencies between the two samples. This could be understandable from hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements, suggesting the formation of Ni-Si compounds at the interface in the sample with a poor performance. Hence, such combined measurements are useful to provide information that cannot be obtained by electrical measurements alone.

The Damage analysis for irradiation tolerant spin-driven thermoelectric device based on single-crystalline Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$/Pt heterostructures

The combination of spin-driven thermoelectric (STE) devices based on spin Seebeck effect (SSE), and radioactive isotopes as heat sources, has potential as a next-generation method of power generation in applications such as power supplies for space probes. However, there has been very limited knowledge available indicating the irradiation tolerance of spin thermoelectric devices. Through analysis using a heavy ion-beam accelerator and the hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements, we show that a prototypical STE device based on Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$/Pt heterostructures has tolerance to irradiation of high-energy heavy-ion beams. We used 320 MeV gold ion beams modeling cumulative damages due to fission products emitted from the surface of spent nuclear fuels. By varying the dose level, we confirmed that the thermoelectric and magnetic properties of the SSE elements are not affected by the ion-irradiation dose up to $$10^{10}$$ ions/cm$$^2$$ fluence and that the SSE signal is extinguished around $$10^{12}$$ ions/cm$$^2$$, in which the ion tracks almost fully cover the sample surface. In addition, the HAXPES measurements were performed to understand the effects at the interface of Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$/Pt. The HAXPES measurements suggest that the chemical reaction that diminishes the SSE signals is enhanced with the increase of the irradiation dose. We share the current understandings of the damage analysis in Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$/Pt for developing better STE devices applicable to harsh environmental usages.

Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of Pt/Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$

High energy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements were carried out for the Spin Seebeck system Pt/Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$(YIG). This system was found to show anomalous Hall effect, possible due to the formation of intermetallic compounds between Fe$$^{3+}$$ and Pt. To reveal this possibility, we have measured the Fe 1s photoelectron peaks by using HAXPES. It was found that the Fe ions consist of Fe$$^{3+}$$ in YIG and metallic Fe. The formation of the metallic state is consistent with the proposed origin of the anomalous Hall effect. Other spectra such as Pt 4f will be presented at the conference.

Hydrochemical influence of shotcrete used in underground facilities on groundwater chemistry; Proposal of the evaluation method by geochemical simulation code

In order to clarify the influence of shotcrete in the underground facility on the groundwater chemistry, an in-situ closed test was conducted in the mock-up tunnel at the depth of 500 m. Brucite, Ettringite, Ca(OH) $$_{2}$$, Gibbsite, K$$_{2}$$CO$$_{3}$$, Na$$_{2}$$CO$$_{3}$$ $$cdot$$ 10H$$_{2}$$O, SiO$$_{2}$$ (a) and Calcite were identified as the dominant minerals affecting the water chemistry. Furthermore, the shotcrete constructed in the tunnel has a reaction capacity which can produce about 570 m$$^{3}$$ of alkaline groundwater (pH12.4) saturated with Ca(OH)$$_{2}$$. The estimation would improve the accuracy of prediction analysis of the long-term chemical influence of cement materials after the closure of the tunnel.

An innovative electro-thermodynamic cycle based on temporal temperature variations using pyroelectric effect has been presented. Practical energy is successfully generated in both $textit{in-situ}$ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements under controlled conditions and $textit{Operando}$ real engine dynamometer experiments. The main generating origin is revealed as a combination of a crystal structure change and dipole change phenomenon corresponds to the temperature variation. In particular, the electric field induced 180$$^circ$$ domain switching extremely improves generating power, and the true energy breakeven with temperature variation is firstly achieved.

We have studied the electronic properties of ferroelectric BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using two complementary bulk-sensitive spectroscopic probes, resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS). Contrary to a previous study, we found no temperature change of a PFY-XAS spectrum at the Ba L$$_{3}$$ edge between room temperature and 150$$^{circ}$$C. This result is not supportive of the possible presence of the displacement around Ba$$^{2+}$$ at the Curie temperature. RXES spectra were measured at the Ti K edge for BaTiO$$_{3}$$, along with SrTiO$$_{3}$$ and La-doped metallic SrTiO$$_{3}$$. The photon energy of the emission peak is found to be nearly constant throughout the absorption edge for all three compounds. We deduce the Ti 3d states to have a delocalized character, in contrast with the Ba 5d states, a property which is consistent with the proposed scenario of the formation of electric dipoles in BaTiO$$_{3}$$.

We have investigated the magnetic properties of R$$_{2}$$Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{7}$$ (R=Yb and Lu), which belongs to the homologous family of electronic ferroelectric RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$. Magnetization measurements show ferrimagnetic ordering at the Neel temperature (T$$_{N}$$) of about 270 K, which is slightly higher than that of RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ (T$$_{N}$$ about 230-250 K). Observation of spin glass and exchange bias shows a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagneticinteractions, similarly to RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$. This situation gives rise to a complex magnetic change and a broad peak of magnetic entropy change. Some characteristics, such as refrigeration temperatures higher than in RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$, seem to offer a possibility of this system to applications.

We have directly probed the Ba 5d states in the ferroelectric barium titanate BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS) at the Ba-L$$_{3}$$ edge. The results are compared with those of the non-ferroelectric BaSO$$_{4}$$. While the RXES spectra point to a localized character for the Ba 5d states in both compounds, the main peak of the PFY-XAS spectrum, corresponding to the dipolar transitions from 2p to 5d, is found to be significantly broader for BaTiO$$_{3}$$ than for BaSO$$_{4}$$. On the basis of band structure calculations, this broadening is ascribed to strong hybridization between the unoccupied Ba 5d and O 2p states in the ferroelectric. This suggests that the hybridization between the conduction states of the Ba$$^{2+}$$ and O$$^{2-}$$ ions, and not only Ti$$^{4+}$$ and O$$^{2-}$$, plays a central role in determining the electronic structure of BaTiO$$_{4}$$.
