Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy utilizing soft X-ray synchrotron radiation was applied to Heusler-type Co$$_2$$MnGa thin films that have a 1-nm Al capping layer. The bulk Fermi surfaces and band structures varied along the out-of-plane momentum, stemming from the three-dimensional crystal structure, in the absence of any in situ surface treatment. In addition, there were characteristic intersecting bands (Weyl cones), with crossing points near the Fermi level, which were consistent with computed results. The Weyl cones are of bulk origin and are responsible for the high anomalous Nernst and the anomalous Hall coefficients. A close comparison of the experimental band structures in Co$$_2$$MnGe and Co$$_2$$MnGa indicated that the rigid band picture is valid in both alloys and that fine carrier tuning is possible by replacing Ga with Ge to improve the anomalous conductivity.

X-ray and neutron diffraction analyses of ammonia borane were conducted at ambient and high pressures. The H-H distance in dihydrogen bonds was shorter than twice the van der Waals radius (2.4 ${AA}$). The half of the dihydrogen bonds were broken on phase transition from AP to the first high pressure phase (HP1) at approximately 1.2 GPa as revealed by an increase in the H-H distances. On further pressure increase, all of the H-H distances became shorter than 2.4 ${AA}$ again, implying the pressure-induced reformation of the dihydrogen bonds. Furthermore, the HP1 transformed to the second one with the structure of $$P2_1$$ (Z = 2) at about 11 GPa. In this phase transition, the inclination of the molecule axis became larger and the number of types of dihydrogen bonds increased from 6 to 11. Just before the third transition at 18.9 GPa, the shortest dihydrogen bond decreased to 1.65 ${AA}$. The present study experimentally first confirmed the breakage and reformation of the dihydrogen bonds by the structural change under pressure.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) started the Research and Development (R&D) to improve nuclear prediction techniques for High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGRs). The objectives are to introduce a generalized bias factor method to avoid full mock-up experiment for the first commercial HTGR and to introduce reactor noise analysis to High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) experiment to observe subcriticality. To achieve the objectives, the reactor core of graphite-moderation system named B7/4"G2/8"p8EUNU+3/8"p38EU(1) was newly composed in the B-rack of Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA). The core is composed of the fuel assembly, driver fuel assembly, graphite reflector, and polyethylene reflector. The fuel assembly is composed of enriched uranium plate, natural uranium plate and graphite plates to realize the average fuel enrichment of HTTR and it's spectrum. However, driver fuel assembly is necessary to achieve the criticality with the small-sized core. The core plays a role of the reference core of the bias factor method, and the reactor noise was measured to develop the noise analysis scheme. In this study, the overview of the criticality experiments is reported. The reactor configuration with graphite moderation system is rare case in the KUCA experiments, and this experiment is expected to contribute not only for an HTGR development but also for other types of a reactor in the graphite moderation system such as a molten salt reactor development.

In order to investigate the potential of high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) for transmutation of long-lived fission products (LLFPs), numerical simulation of four types of HTGRs were carried out. In addition to the gas-turbine high temperature reactor system "GTHTR300", a small modular HTGR plant "HTR50S" and two types of plutonium burner HTGRs "Clean Burn with MA" and "Clean Burn without MA" were considered. The simulation results show that an early realization of LLFP transmutation using a compact HTGR may be possible since the HTR50S can transmute fair amount of LLFPs for its thermal output. The Clean Burn with MA can transmute a limited amount of LLFPs. However, an efficient LLFP transmutation using the Clean Burn without MA seems to be convincing as it is able to achieve very high burn-ups and produce LLFP transmutation more than GTHTR300. Based on these results, we propose utilization of variety of HTGRs for LLFP transmutation and storage.

A new technique for continuous dissolution of nuclear reaction products transported by a gas-jet system was developed for superheavy element (SHE) chemistry. In this technique, a hydrophobic membrane is utilized to separate an aqueous phase from the gas phase. With this technique, the dissolution efficiencies of short-lived radionuclides of $$^{91m,93m}$$Mo and $$^{176}$$W were measured. Yields of more than 80% were observed for short-lived radionuclides at aqueous-phase flow rates of 0.1-0.4 mL/s. The gas flow-rate had no influence on the dissolution efficiency within the studied flow range of 1.0-2.0 L/min. These results show that this technique is applicable for on-line chemical studies of SHEs in the liquid phase.

In situ neutron diffraction measurements combined with the pulsed neutron source at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) were conducted on high-pressure polymorphs of deuterated portlandite (Ca(OD)$$_{2}$$) using a Paris-Edinburgh cell and a multi-anvil press. The atomic positions including hydrogen for the unquenchable high-pressure phase at room temperature (phase II') were first clarified. The bent hydrogen bonds under high pressure were consistent with results from Raman spectroscopy. The structure of the high-pressure and high-temperature phase (Phase II) was concordant with that observed previously by another group for a recovered sample. The observations elucidate the phase transition mechanism among the polymorphs, which involves the sliding of CaO polyhedral layers, position modulations of Ca atoms, and recombination of Ca-O bonds accompanied by the reorientation of hydrogen to form more stable hydrogen bonds.

Study on transmutation and storage of LLFP using a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor

Kora, Kazuki*; Nakaya, Hiroyuki*; Kubo, Kotaro*; Matsuura, Hideaki*; Shimakawa, Satoshi; Goto, Minoru; Nakagawa, Shigeaki

Proceedings of International Conference on the Physics of Reactors; The Role of Reactor Physics toward a Sustainable Future (PHYSOR 2014) (CD-ROM), 12 Pages, 2014/09

In this study, the capability of HTGR as LLFP transmuter was evaluated in terms of neutron economy. Considering gas turbine high-temperature reactor with 300 MWe nominal capacity (GTHTR300) as HTGR, transmutations of four types of LLFP nuclide were estimated using Monte Carlo transport code MVP and ORIGEN. In addition, burn-up simulations for whole-core region were carried out using MVP-BURN. It was numerically shown that the neutron fluxes change significantly depending on the arrangement of LLFP in the core. When 15 t of LLFP is placed in an ideal manner, the GTHTR300 can sustain sufficient reactivity for one year while transmuting up to 30 kg per year. Additionally, there are more space available for storing larger amount of LLFP without affecting the reactivity. These results suggest that there is a possibility of using GTHTR300 as both LLFP storage and transmuter.

The Crystal structure of $$delta$$-Al(OH)$$_{3}$$; Neutron diffraction measurements and ab initio calculations

American Mineralogist, 96(5-6), p.854 - 859, 2011/05

Neutron powder diffraction analyses of $$delta$$-Al(OD)$$_{3}$$ revealed that the crystals are orthorhombic with space group ${it P}$2$$_{1}$$2$$_{1}$$2$$_{1}$$, but not ${it Pnma}$ as reported previously by X-ray diffraction data. The initial lattice parameters and the atomic positions of both Al and O were taken from previous X-ray structural analyses for the ${it Pnma}$ structure, while the H atom positions were determined using ab initio calculations. The $$delta$$-Al(OH)$$_{3}$$ structure possesses one relatively long and two short O-H...O hydrogen bonds. Ab initio calculations are also used to find that $$delta$$-Al(OH)$$_{3}$$ with space group ${it P}$2$$_{1}$$2$$_{1}$$2$$_{1}$$ transforms to another high pressure polymorph with space group ${it Pnma}$ at around 67 GPa, and that the two short hydrogen bonds in $$delta$$-Al(OH)$$_{3}$$ become both symmetric through the transformation, in which the protons are located at the midpoints of the O...O hydrogen bonds.

Towards electrolytic reduction of Sg, batch-wise electrolytic reduction of carrier-free $$^{93m}$$Mo and $$^{176,181}$$W radiotracers was studied using a flow electrolytic column (FEC). The electrolyzed samples from a FEC were chemically analyzed by solvent extraction with TOA and HDEHP to separate and identify reduced species from the stable Mo(VI) and W(VI) ones based on their different extraction behavior. $$^{93m}$$Mo and $$^{176, 181}$$W were applied as radiotracers. We also performed cyclic voltammetry and UV/Vis absorption spectrometry of macro amounts of Mo and W in acidic solutions to obtain information on redox reactions of these elements under given conditions. In the conference, the present status of the preparatory reduction experiments with Mo and W will be presented.

Due to short half-lives less than 10 s and extremely low production rates, transactinide elements heavier than seaborgium (Sg) are produced on an atom per hour scale. Therefore, a continuous rapid chemistry assembly is required to study aqueous-phase chemistry of these heaviest elements. In the present study, we started developments of a continuous chemistry assembly. Our first attempt was made in on-line experiments with Mo and W, lighter homologs of Sg, to optimize a chemistry assembly consisting of a newly developed membrane degasser as an interface between gas-jet and aqueous phase, a flow electrolytic column apparatus utilized to control oxidation states of Mo and W ions, and the continuous liquid-liquid extraction apparatus of SISAK for separation. In the conference, present status of the developments will be presented.
