Development of performance assessment models for glass dissolution

Goto, Takahiro*; Mitsui, Seiichiro; Takase, Hiroyasu*; Kurosawa, Susumu*; Inagaki, Manabu*; Shibata, Masahiro; Ishiguro, Katsuhiko*

MRS Advances (Internet), 1(63-64), p.4239 - 4245, 2016/00

NUMO and JAEA have conducted a joint research since FY2011, which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. As a part of this joint research, we have been developing glass dissolution models which consider various processes in EBS, such as precipitation of Fe-silicates associated with iron overpack corrosion, and Si transport through corrosion products in the cracked overpack. The objectives of the modeling work are to evaluate relative importance of relevant processes and to identify further R&D issues towards development of a convincing safety case. Sensitivity analyses suggested that predicted glass dissolution time ranges from 1$$times$$10$$^3$$ to 1$$times$$10$$^7$$ years or more due to uncertainties in the current understanding of the key processes, namely precipitation of Fe-silicates and transport characteristics of the altered glass layer.

Tungsten spectra have been observed from Large Helical Device (LHD) and Compact electron Beam Ion Trap (CoBIT) in wavelength ranges of visible to EUV. The tungsten spectra from LHD are well analyzed based on the knowledge from CoBIT tungsten spectra. The C-R model code has been developed to explain the UTA spectra in details. Radial profiles of EUV spectra from highly ionized tungsten ions have been measured and analyzed by impurity transport simulation code with ADPAK atomic database code to examine the ionization balance determined by ionization and recombination rate coefficients. The ablation cloud of the impurity pellet is directly measured with visible spectroscopy.

Ionic liquid extraction systems utilizing ion recognition

Shimojo, Kojiro; Goto, Masahiro*

Nihon Ion Kokan Gakkai-Shi, 22(2), p.65 - 72, 2011/06

Ionic liquids have attracted much attention as the third liquid because they possess different properties from those of water and organic solvents. Their unique properties have encouraged us to develop liquid-liquid extraction systems using ionic liquids as extracting media. In this review, we describe metal ion and protein extractions in ionic liquid-water biphasic systems using the size recognition ability of macrocyclic compounds. Furthermore, we report the potential utility of ionic liquids as novel reaction media for biological catalysis with proteins extracted.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

The application of ionic liquids as alternatives to conventional organic solvents in extraction processes has been actively investigated. A crucial step towards the practical use of ionic liquids is the development of extractants that work effectively within these new media. In the present study, the extraction separation of rare earth metals into ionic liquids, 1-butyl, 1-octyl, and l-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C$$_{n}$$ min][Tf$$_{2}$$N], ${it n}$ = 4, 8, 12), was performed using a novel extractant, ${it N}$,${it N}$-dioctyldiglycol amic acid (DODGAA). Quantitative extraction of metal ions such as Y$$^{3+}$$ and Eu$$^{3+}$$ was selectively achieved in the presence of the base metal ion Zn$$^{2+}$$, which was not extracted at all under the present experimental conditions. The extraction efficiency was enhanced for the shorter-alkyl-chain imidazolium ionic liquid [C$$_{4}$$mim] [Tf$$_{2}$$N] compared to that for a conventional organic solvent system. Extraction mechanism studies elucidated that the metal extraction proceeds via proton exchange reactions between DODGAA and the metal ions in the ionic liquid (the same mechanism as in the conventional organic solvent). The stripping reaction, or recovery, of the metal ions from the extracting phase was readily accomplished with an acid solution such as nitric acid.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

In this paper, we have developed a new ${it Escherichia coli}$ whole-cell biocatalytic system that affords the efficient microbial indigo production by cytochrome P450cam mutants (Y96F or F87W-Y96F) in the cells. The novel system is comprised of two types of P450cam mutants (Y96F or F87W-Y96F), putidaredoxin, putidaredoxin reductase, and bacterial glycerol dehydrogenase. The present ${it E. coli}$ whole-cell biocatalysts might be applicable to practical microbial indigo production.

The configuration of multiple hydrogen atoms trapped in a tungsten monovacancy is investigated using first-principles calculations. Unlike previous computational studies, which have reported that hydrogen in BCC metal monovacancies occupies octahedral interstitial sites, it is found that the stable sites shift towards tetrahedral interstitial sites as the number of hydrogen atoms increases. As a result, a maximum of twelve hydrogen atoms can become trapped in a tungsten monovacancy.

We have developed a highly stable supported liquid membrane based on ionic liquids (ILs) for the separation of rare-earth metals, employing $$N,N$$-dioctyldiglycol amic acid as a mobile carrier. The quantitative transport of Y and Eu through the membrane was successfully attained, and separation from metal impurities, Zn, was efficiently accomplished. A membrane stable enough for long-term operation was constructible from imidazolium-based ILs having a longer alkyl chain, such as octyl or dodecyl groups in an imidazolium cation.

Extraction of lanthanide ions with an organophosphorous extractant into ionic liquids

Kubota, Fukiko*; Koyanagi, Yusuke*; Nakashima, Kazunori*; Shimojo, Kojiro; Kamiya, Noriho*; Goto, Masahiro*

Solvent Extraction Research and Development, Japan, 15, p.81 - 87, 2008/00

Extraction of lanthanide ions was carried out with the organophosphorous extractant PC-88A dissolved in an imidazolium-based ionic liquid. PC-88A was soluble in ionic liquids having long-chain alkyl substituents such as octyl and dodecyl groups, [C$$_{8}$$mim] and [C$$_{12}$$mim][TFSI], although short-chain imidazolium ionic liquids could not solubilize the extractant. The extraction equilibrium observed in the ionic liquid system was similar to that in the n-dodecane system, and the extraction behavior could be explained by the same proton exchange mechanism as for the conventional organic solvent system, although the extraction efficiency was not improved. An ionic liquid having shorter alkyl chain [C$$_{8}$$mim] showed a higher extraction ability than [C$$_{12}$$mim][TFSI]. Stripping of the metal ions from the ionic liquids was also examined. Quantitative stripping of the metal ions was achieved by nitric acid in the [C$$_{12}$$mim][TFSI] system.
