The structures of Eu complexes in the adsorbents prepared with various extractants were evaluated by ion beam induced luminescence analysis in an extraction chromatography for minor actinides recovery. The luminescence of Eu was measured with a proton beam obtained from the single-ended accelerator and an argon ion beam obtained from the azimuthally varying field cyclotron in Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application in National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology. In this study, it was confirmed that the spectral shape of Eu complexes in the adsorbents varied depending on the kinds of extractants, and the correlation between the change in the spectra and the structures of Eu complexes was investigated.

QST-M-39; QST Takasaki Annual Report 2021, P. 62, 2023/02

In an extraction chromatography method for minor actinides recovery, analysis for the structure of complex in a silica-based adsorbent has been studied to separate minor actinides efficiently. In this study, Eu was used as simulated material of minor actinides, and silica-based adsorbents containing Eu complex were prepared. The ion beam induced luminescence spectra of Eu complexes in silica-based adsorbents were measured, and the basic data for the structures of Eu complexes were obtained.

The spent PUREX solvent containing U and Pu is generated from the reprocessing process of spent nuclear fuel. The nuclear material removal is important for the safe storage or disposal of the spent solvent. Our previous study revealed that the adsorbent with the iminodiacetic acid (IDA) functional group is one of the most promising materials for designing the nuclear material recovery process. Accordingly, an IDA-type adsorbent was synthesized by using graft polymerization technology or a chemical reaction to improve the adsorption rate and capacity. The synthesized IDA-type adsorbent was characterized by micro particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses. The micro-PIXE analysis revealed that Zr was adsorbed on the whole synthesized adsorbents and quantified the microamount of adsorbed Zr. Moreover, EXAFS suggested that Zr in the aqueous solution and solvent can be trapped by the IDA group with different mechanisms.

no journal, ,

We have started the fundamental research on detailed aerosol deposition phenomena at the walls of containment vessel and reactor building to develop a reasonable evaluation model of aerosol deposition amount which have a large influence on release amount to the environment. In this study, an aerosol deposition test onto various materials was conducted to investigate the physical and chemical phenomena related to aerosol deposition. As a result, important phenomena such as aerosol penetration into concrete pore were observed, which should be considered in the aerosol deposition model.

Cs penetration behavior into concrete structure of reactor building

no journal, ,

For the waste management of radioactive concrete in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, the analysis technology of Cs penetration behavior into concrete was developed. In this study, samples of small-scale leaching tests into CsI or CsCl dissolved water solution were subjected to the PIXE. The results of PIXE show that the Cs penetration depth and the change of Cs concentration with the content of aggregates can be obtained, which indicates that the PIXE measurement was useful for the samples with dilute concentration.

Local structure analysis of Cs in concrete of reactor building

Koshigoe, Koki*; Sato, Isamu*; Hagura, Naoto*; Miyahara, Naoya*; Suzuki, Eriko; Osaka, Masahiko; Matsuura, Haruaki*

no journal, ,

For the waste management of radioactive concrete in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, the Cs penetration behavior into concrete focused on the effects of aggregates was investigated by small-scale leaching tests into CsI or CsCl dissolved water solution. The Cs chemical state was investigated by using EXAFS. As a result, the coordination number of O with Cs was decreased with increase of the content of aggregates. This suggests that the content of aggregates can affect the Cs penetration behavior into concrete.

Investigation on Cs penetration behavior into concrete using INAA

Yoneyama, Kai*; Sato, Isamu*; Hagura, Naoto*; Furuya, Noriaki*; Miwa, Shuhei; Suzuki, Eriko

no journal, ,

In order to clarify the Cs penetration behavior into concrete, the Cs penetration tests from low-concentration Cs solution into aggregate, mortar and concrete was carried out. The concentrations of penetrated Cs along the depth from surface were analyzed using INAA. At the depths deeper than 0.5 mm, the concentration of Cs in concrete was higher than the total concentration of Cs in aggregate and mortar. This result has been shown also in the previous penetration tests using more high-concentration Cs solution. These are considered to be occurred because interface of aggregates and mortar would promote the penetration of Cs.

no journal, ,

In order to develop an analysis technique of penetrated Cs into concrete, the concentration of penetrated Cs into bulk concretes and bulk mortars were quantitatively analyzed using PIXE. The results of concentration decrease along the depth from surface proved the applicability of PIXE to the quantitative analyses of low-concentration Cs in bulk samples. This can reduce experimental errors and contribute to a detailed estimation of Cs penetration behavior.

no journal, ,

In order to develop an analysis technique of penetrated Cs into concrete, the concentration of penetrated Cs into bulk concretes and bulk mortars were quantitatively analyzed using PIXE. The difference of penetration depth between concretes and mortars, which has been observed also in the Cs penetration tests using more high-concentration Cs solutions, was observed. These results showed the applicability of PIXE to the quantitative analyses of low-concentration Cs in bulk samples.
