In this study, we employed a superconducting detector, current-biased kinetic-inductance detector (CB-KID) for neutron imaging using a pulsed neutron source. We employed the delay-line method, and high spatial resolution imaging with only four reading channels was achieved. We also performed wavelength-resolved neutron imaging by the time-of-flight method. We obtained the neutron transmission images of a Gd-Al alloy sample, inside which single crystals of GdAl$$_{3}$$ were grown, using the delay-line CB-KID. Single crystals were well imaged, in both shapes and distributions, throughout the Al-Gd alloy. We identified Gd nuclei via neutron transmissions that exhibited characteristic suppression above the neutron wavelength of 0.03 nm. In addition, the $$_{155}$$Gd resonance dip, a dip structure of the transmission caused by the nuclear reaction between an isotope and neutrons, was observed even when the number of events was summed over a limited area of 15 $$mu$$m $$times$$ 12 $$mu$$m. Gd selective imaging was performed using the resonance dip of $$_{155}$$Gd, and it showed clear Gd distribution even with a limited neutron wavelength range of 1 pm.

This study explores high-energy neutron components of the extracted neutron beam at J-PARC pulsed neutron source using the foil activation method with threshold reactions. Foils of aluminum, gold, bismuth, niobium, and thulium were used to cover the neutron energy range from 0.3 MeV to 79.4 MeV. The experiment was performed using neutron beams of BL10 (NOBORU). The foils were irradiated by a neutron beam at 13.4 m from the moderator. To characterize high-energy neutron fields for irradiation applications, reaction rates in three different configurations with and without B$$_{4}$$C slit and Pb filter were examined. To compare the experiments with calculations given for the user, reaction rates for corresponding reactions were calculated by the PHITS code with the JENDL-3.2 and the JENDL dosimetry file. Although there was a systematic tendency in C/E (Calculation/Experiment) ratios for different threshold energies, which C/E ratio decreased as threshold energy increased up to 100 MeV, and all C/E ratios were in the range of 1.0$$pm$$0.2. This indicated that high-energy neutron calculations were adequate for the analysis of experimental data for NOBORU users.

In the decommissioning of the Fukushima-Daiichi (1F) Nuclear Power Plant, it is essential to understand characteristics of the melted core materials. The estimation of boride in the real debris is of great importance to develop safe debris removal plans. Hence, it is required to investigate the amount of boron in the melted core materials with nondestructive methods. Prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) is one of the useful techniques to determine the amount of borides by means of the 478 keV prompt gamma-ray from neutron absorption reaction of boron. Moreover, it is well known that the width of the 478 keV gamma-ray peak is typically broadened due to the Doppler effect. The degree of the broadening is affected by coexisting materials, and can be recognized by the width of the prompt gamma-ray peak. As a feasibility study, the prompt gamma-ray from boride samples were measured using the ANNRI, NOBORU, and RADEN beamlines at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Complex (J-PARC).

In neutron fundamental physics, study of correlation term $${bf s}cdot{bf I}$$ of a neutron spin $${bf s}$$ and a target nuclear spin $${bf I}$$ is important because $${bf s}cdot{bf I}$$ term interferes to parity non-conserving (PNC) and time reversal non-conserving terms. For this study, a xenon (Xe) is an interesting nucleus because it has been observed an enhancement of PNC effect around neutron resonance peaks, and polarizes up to $$ sim 10^{-1}$$ by using a spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) method. We would plan to develop a polarized Xe gas target with a compact in-situ SEOP system, and to study $${bf s}cdot{bf I}$$ term by utilizing epithermal neutron beams supplied from a high intense pulsed spallation neutron source. As the first step, we attempted to measure neutron polarizing ability caused by $${bf s}cdot{bf I}$$ term at a 9.6 eV s-wave resonance peak of $$^{129}$$Xe at BL10 in MLF, by detecting change $$Delta R$$ of ratio between neutron transmissions with the polarized and unpolarized Xe target. After demonstrating that our apparatus could detect small change ($$Delta R_{rm DB} , {approx},10^{-2}$$) of neutron transmissions caused by Doppler broadening effect, a signified value of $$Delta R$$ has been obtained as preliminary results. For analyzing the obtained $$Delta R$$ in detail, we are improving our nuclear magnetic resonance and electron paramagnetic resonance systems for evaluating Xe polarization independently of neutron beams.

In MLF at J-PARC, a unified mercury radioactivity monitor (UHAM) is installed to find an indication of failure of the mercury target and loop system by detecting radioactive materials leaked from the system with a $$gamma$$-ray energy analysis with Germanium semi-conductor detectors (Ge detectors). It is composed of three units of sampling port and radiation monitors: (1) HAM for interstitial helium gas layer between the mercury vessel and surrounding water shroud of the mercury target, (2) CAM for atmosphere in the hot cell where the target loop is operated and (3) VAM for helium gas in the helium vessel where the target vessel is installed. Once any leakages of radioactive materials are detected, an alarm signal is issued immediately to the accelerator control system to stop beam operation. Software and hardware have been upgraded yearly. For example, two Ge detectors are used for HAM for redundancy, NaI Scintillation detectors are also used as supplemental for the Ge detector to keep availability of the system for high counting rate event. In April 2015, the UHAM activated when a small water coolant leakage from the water shroud of the mercury target occurred. VAM detected an abnormal increase of the counting rate in the helium vessel. It was also indicated that the measured radioactive nuclides were generated from the activation of the coolant (water) in the water shroud and not from the mercury.

JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 33, p.011098_1 - 011098_5, 2021/03

Materials and Life science experimental Facility (MLF) in J-PARC has a high-intense spallation neutron source and a high-intense muon source induced by 3-GeV and 1MW proton beam. To reduce beam loss, components of proton, neutron and muon beam lines are precisely aligned. However, a settlement of MLF caused by a building construction, installation of heavy shields, earthquakes, consolidation of basement, instrument installation (weight increase), and so on, was assumed in the design stage. Therefore, periodic level measurements in MLF was started from the design stage. A few tens of level measuring points are installed inside and outside MLF. The level measurements were done once per month in the construction stage and per year after operation start. In the construction stage of MLF, it was found that the MLF building largely settled by construction of the building and installation of many shields. And it was also found that The Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, caused large settlements of MLF attached buildings. Figure 1 shows fluctuations of measured levels at representative points in each area from December 2011. No critical deterioration (small changes within $$pm$$1.0 mm) could be detected. However, a few local settlements are found in the MLF building. In the presentation, periodic level measurement results at MLF will be introduced.

Soft errors induced by terrestrial radiation in semiconductor devices have been of concern from the viewpoint of their reliability. Generally, to evaluate the soft error rates (SERs), neutron irradiation tests are performed at neutron facility. We have performed SER measurement for the 65-nm bulk SRAM and the FDSOI SRAM at RCNP in Osaka University and CYRIC in Tohoku University. In this study, we performed SER measurement for the same devices at BL10 in J-PARC MLF. The increasing rate of SER by reducing the supply voltage at J-PARC BL10 is larger than those obtained at RCNP and CYRIC. From PHITS simulation, the cause of this difference can be explained by the influence of the protons generated by neutron elastic scattering with hydrogen atoms in the package resin.
