The Japan Spallation Neutron Source (JSNS) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) had been developed as a 1-MW spallation neutron source. A Au-In-Cd alloy has been proposed as a new decoupler material. Recently, we successfully produced the ternary Au-In-Cd alloy. The alloy composition is 74.9 at% Au, 0.5 at% In, and 24.6 at% Cd. We used the pulsed neutron imaging techniques to measure the elements in the Au-In-Cd alloy. Both a time gated camera system and a multi-channel plate (MCP) detector were used as detectors. Measurement was performed at BL10 in the JSNS. A Au-In-Cd specimen, In foil and two Au foils are used as a sample. As a results, we could obtain distribution of Au, In and Cd in the Au-In-Cd specimens distinctly.

The neutron resonance absorption imaging technique with a high-speed video camera was successfully demonstrated at the beam line NOBORU, J-PARC. We obtained a set of energy dependent images having enhanced contrast of sample foils around the resonance absorption energies of cobalt (132 eV), cadmium (28 eV), tantalum (4.3 and 10 eV), gold (4.9 eV) and indium (1.5 eV). The capability of this technique is discussed taking into account an absolute peak value and width of a resonance cross section, pulse width of neutron and quantity of sample material. The minimum quantities to perform the neutron absorption imaging with this technique are shown for most of elements.

no journal, ,

In order to investigate the feasibility on the multiphase flow measurement using J-PARC as the pulsed neutron source, neutron simulations for the energy selective neutron imaging were carried out as the first step for the planning of multiphase flow experiments at J-PARC. It was confirmed from the simulation results that the 3$$times$$3 rod-bundle void fraction measurement experiment can be carried out under high void fraction condition with epithermal neutrons of 1eV.

We proposed a Au-In-Cd alloy as a new low-activation decoupler material of JSNS (Japan Spallation Neutron Source) moderators. To realize the Au-In-Cd alloy decoupler, we tried to make small Au-In-Cd alloy specimens. Then confirm uniformity of the three elements in the specimens, we attempted to measure elemental distributions in a specimen by the resonance absorption neutron imaging technique with the pulsed neutron beam available at J-PARC. The experiment was performed at the NOBORU instrument (BL10). We used the single flame camera imaging system. The imaging system consists of a scintillator plate, optical lenses, an image intensifier and a camera. Images were taken in several time ranges that correspond to the resonance energies of the elements. As a results, we can see only one of three elements in the image and it was confirmed that the indium was distributed almost uniformly over the specimen.

We have started to study production and utilization of an $$alpha$$ radioactive nuclide $$^{211}$$At which is a prospective candidate for targeted alpha radiotherapy. We determined production cross sections of astatine radioisotopes in the reaction of 29-48 MeV $$^7$$Li+$$^{nat}$$Pb by $$alpha$$-ray and $$gamma$$-ray spectrometry at the tandem accelerator of JAEA-Tokai. Besides, we developed a simple dry-chemical method for separation of astatine.
