This research focused on methods of estimating the amounts of groundwater recharge, which are normally required as upper boundary conditions in groundwater flow analyses, based on measurements of infiltrating water in the ground, to systematize the methods and establish systems which are stable and measurable on site over a long time. Regarding developing measurement systems, fiber-optic strain measurement methods that enable multiple-point and long-distance measurement were used for measuring three quantities: suction pressure, soil moisture and volumetric water content rate obtained by applying water absorption swelling material, and each measurement was discussed. The results showed that the fiber-optic soil aquameter has two types of practical application: one for measuring suction pressure (Type I), and the other for measuring volumetric water content rate obtained by applying water absorption swelling material (Type III). Furthermore, by using measurement instruments in actual fields, the validity of the two methods for estimating the rainfall infiltration capacities of shallow-layer soils, that is, estimating the capacities either directly by measurements of soil water or from unsaturated hydraulic conductivities, was confirmed.

It is revealed that partial substitution of Cu and Co for Fe in LuFeO destabilized the CO structure. In LuFeCuO, there exist characteristic zigzag-shaped diffuse streaks and diffuse spots at the h/3- h/3- 0-type positions (h: integer, =0.06) in reciprocal space, which originate from static cationic ordering of Fe and Cu ions in the triangular lattice. Moreover, real-space images by the energy-filtered TEM revealed that nanometer-sized domain structures with the 510 nm size are formed. In contrast, honeycomb-shaped diffuse streaks were found in LuFeCoO, in which no domain structures are observed in real-space images.

A multi-level groundwater monitoring system using FBG sensors has been developed for measuring pore water pressure and temperature in small diameter boreholes. The system consists of packer units, temperature and pressure sensing units, and optical fiber cable connecting units. The system with two measurement sections was established as a prototype for the feasibility study. A preliminary test was carried out for about 11 months in a borehole in the Tono area central Japan. The test data obtained in early period were unstable and periods of data loss occurred. Several improvements were implemented and subsequent results show the developed system is feasible for using in slim boreholes.

This document shows the model case concerned with the utilization of constructed facility for the construction of post irradiation examination facility for fusion blanket. In this report, the radioisotope application and development laboratory is considered as constructed facility for post irradiation examination facility and we planned to improve the radioisotope application and development laboratory to the facility of post irradiation examination for fusion material to reduce the construction fee for this facility and promotion of efficiency by concentration of any equipment for fusion material research.

Long-term monitoring system for the underground water is needed as one of the important method to understand characteristic of hydro-geology. To measure long-term pore water pressure, we manufactured the pore water pressure monitoring system with optical fiber sensors which have long term stability and durability, On this job, we producted a new type monitoring system which has two identified zone for measuring water pressure and temperature. This system is divided in two parts by the sense of installed place. The down-hole part is composed of the packer units, temperature and pressure measuring units and optical fiber jointing units. The surface part is composed of observation and data-saving equipment. The specification is as following* Measurement method: FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating)* Measurement contents: Pressure and Temperature* Range: 0-10 kgf/cm(0-1MPa)* Accuracy: plus mimus 0.5%FS* Borehole diameter: from fai 86 to fai 100 millimeterThis system was installed at the DH-5 bore-hole.

In this service, the 1,000 m Type Hydraulic Tester owned by Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute was improved for 1,500m hydraulic test. The test also improved on the quality of data and the efficiency of test. Main improved items are as follows. (1)The test depth was increased to 1,500m from 1,000m. (2)The inner diameters of main testing tubes were increased for sifting the targeted permeability to the higher permeability zone. (3)The continuous measuring function of pressure and temperature in both sides of test section were added. (4)The slide end type packers were adopted because of its excellent watertight quality, durability and pressure resistance. (5)The expansion and contraction of the upper and lower packer can be controlled individually, through the independent system for both packers. (6)The pump system that can provide stable flow control and deep draft water pumping was adopted. (7)The simultaneous analysis system was added. By the improvement on the above, the 1,000m Type Hydraulic Tester was remodeled for 1,500m and improved on the quality of data and the efficiency of test.

In this investigation, the hydraulic test, pumping up and analysis of the underground water were carried out in the deep geology of DH-13 borehole like rock mass or dislocation or broken layer that limits the flow of underground water as one of the study for that flow in the wide area. These investigations were executed to underground the properties of the deep hydraulics and underground water. In this hydraulic test, the method which is popular among foreign countries was applied - some unsteady and steady tests are carried in one test section continuously. By this method, the change of the rock or pore water pressure and the hydraulic conductivity of the main rock were obtained. The results of recovery in steady test (these were not effected by artificial or mechanical means) were applied for the representation. And the water pressure after all test applied for the pore water pressures. The underground water was used for analysis that was pumped up in the process of the steady test. These were no clear change in that results of the analysis among each test section.
