This study compares and assesses the different fatigue and creep-fatigue life evaluation methods by performing tests of perforated plate made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel. Multi-perforated plate was subjected to mechanical cyclic loading at 550$$^{circ}$$C, and crack initiation and propagation on the surfaces of the holes were observed. A series of finite element analyses were carried out to predict the number of cycles to failure by the several failure life evaluation methods, and these predictions were then compared with the test results. Several types of evaluation methods that use the elastic FEA were applied.

The formation and the chemical characterization of single atoms of dubnium (Db, element 105), in the form of its volatile oxychloride, was investigated using the on-line gas phase chromatography technique, in the temperature range 350 - 600 $$^circ$$C. Under the exact same chemical conditions, comparative studies with the lighter homologs of group-5 in the Periodic Table clearly indicate the volatility sequence being NbOCl$$_3 > $$ TaOCl$$_3 geq$$ DbOCl$$_3$$. From the obtained experimental results, thermochemical data for DbOCl$$_3$$ were derived. The present study delivers reliable experimental information for theoretical calculations on the chemical properties of transactinides.

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

Creep-fatigue tests of double-end notched bar made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel

Proceedings of 23rd International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-23) (DVD-ROM), 9 Pages, 2015/05

This paper describes experimental and analytical works to confirm that the design standard for SFR components sufficiently covers possible failure mechanisms. Creep-fatigue damage evaluation method in JSME design standard for SFR components has been constructed based on experiments and/or numerical analyses of conventional austenitic stainless steels, such as 304SS. Since the material characteristics of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel are substantially different from those of austenitic stainless steels, it is required to verify the applicability of the design standards to the SFR components made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel. A series of uni-axial creep-fatigue tests were conducted using double-ended notch bar specimens made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel under displacement controlled condition with 30 minute holding. The curvature radii of the specimens were 1.6mm, 11.2mm and 40.0mm. The specimen having 1.6mm notch and 11.2mm notch failed from outer surface but the specimen having 40.0mm notch showed obvious internal crack nucleation. In addition, though total duration time of the creep-fatigue test was only 2,000 hours, a lot of creep voids and inter granular crack growth were observed. To clarify the cause of such peculiar failure, some additional experiments were performed, as well as some numerical analyses. We could point out that such a peculiar failure aspect might result from corresponding stress distribution in the cross section. As a result of a series of investigations, possible causes of such peculiar failure could be narrowed down. A future investigation plan was proposed to clarify the most significant cause.

To compare and assess the creep-fatigue life evaluation methods for stress concentration point, a series of creep-fatigue test was performed with notched specimens made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel. Mechanical creep-fatigue tests and thermal creep-fatigue test were performed. A series of Finite Element Analysis was also carried out to predict the number of cycles to failure by the several creep-fatigue life evaluation methods. Then these predictions were compared with the test results. Several types of evaluation methods such are stress redistribution locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up method and the methods described in the JSME FRs code were applied. Through the comparisons, it was appeared that SRL method gave rational conservative prediction of the creep-fatigue life for all conditions tested in this study. The JSME FRs code gave an evaluation over 70 times conservative lives comparing with the test results.

Hirose, Yuichi*; Ando, Masanori; Onizawa, Takashi; Wakai, Takashi; Sato, Kenichiro*

Proceedings of 2013 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2013) (USB Flash Drive), 6 Pages, 2013/04

The purpose of this study is to develop assessment of structural integrity for JSFR's primary system made from 316FR steel and Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel in severe accidents that sodium temperature exceeds the design basis temperature as 650 $$^{circ}$$C. It is important of sodium boundary to prevent damages in high-temperature environment. From this standpoint, the way of stress calculation, evaluation formula including limiting value, safety factor and cumulative damages are considered. This paper provides example to apply these assessment for JSFR under development in Japan.

To verify the methods of estimating strain range for discontinues structures, low cycle fatigue tests were carried out with notched specimens. All the specimens were made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo. Displacement control fatigue tests and thermal fatigue tests were performed by ordinary uni-axial push pull test machine and equipment generating the thermal gradient in the notched plate by induction heating. Elastic and inelastic finite element analysis were also performed to estimate strain range for predicting fatigue life. Then these predictions were compared with the test results. Several methods such as stress reduction locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up (SEF) method, Neuber's law and the procedures employed by elevated temperature design codes were applied. Through these comparisons, the applicability and conservativeness of these strain range estimation methods are discussed.

To verify the strain prediction method of discontinues structures at evaluated temperature, low cycle fatigue tests were carried out with notched specimens made of Mod.9Cr-1Mo. Deformation control fatigue tests and thermal fatigue tests were performed by ordinary uni-axial push-pull test machine and equipments generating the thermal gradient in the notched plate by induction heating. Crack initiation and propagation process during the fatigue test were observed by the digital micro-scope and replica method. Then the ranges of several strain predictions and estimations were compared with the test results. Stress Reduction Locus (SRL) method, simple elastic follow-up method, Neuber's rule method and the methods supplied by elevated temperature design standards were applied. Through these results, the applicability and conservativeness of these strain prediction and estimation methods is discussed.
