Enerugi Kankyo Kyoiku Kenkyu, 6(1), p.17 - 20, 2011/12

The Kansai Photon Science Institute of Japan Atomic Energy Agency has promoted the energy and environmental education activity to be associated with Kids' Science Museum of Photons. All the effective methods on activities as cooperation activities, (1) dispatch cooperation lecture with Schools, and (2) in-service training for teachers with Educational Institutions, and (3) experienced experiments lecture with Public People, are discussed, based on the East Japan Great Earthquake. New approaches have been developed and tried on dispatch lectures through practices for a lot of students and the temporary recognition from the view of the world with multilayered structures in connection with energy and environmental education contents, which is called "mapping science" on the theme of "Light", "Energy", "Space" and "Environment", for obtaining the global image of lecture contents. Significant effects are also obtained to be combined with use of the renewal effects on the theater image.

JAERI and JNC have started a JAERI-JNC joint research program in fiscal year 2003, which has been aimed for efficient progress and synergistic effect on the research activities in both Institutes. This study has been chosen one of the joint research themes because it has been our common objective in the field of structural materials of FBR and LWR components. The purpose of the study is to clarify damage mechanism of structural materials used under irradiation, and then to develop the methods for damage evaluation and detection in earlier stage of progressing process of damage. In fiscal year 2004 and 2005, micro-corrosion measurement, electrochemical corrosion test and leakage magnetic flux density measurement apparatuses were developed and equipped in two hot facilities and irradiated and unirradiated crept specimens, irradiated high purity model austenitic stainless alloys were also prepared and applied to this study. These apparatuses and specimens were used for damage evaluation, and these feasibilities for nuclear power plant materials were studied.

Hoshiya, Taiji*; Takaya, Shigeru*; Ueno, Fumiyoshi; Nemoto, Yoshiyuki; Nagae, Yuji*; Miwa, Yukio; Abe, Yasuhiro*; Omi, Masao; Tsukada, Takashi; Aoto, Kazumi*

JAERI and JNC have begun the cooperative research of evaluation techniques of structural material degradation in FBR and LWR, which based on magnetic and corrosion properties along grain boundaries. Magnetic method has been proposed as the one of the non-destructive detection techniques on the early stage of creep-damage before crack initiation for aged structural materials of FBRs. The effects of applied stress on natural magnetization were investigated on paramagnetic stainless steels having creep-damages. On the other hand, corrosion properties and magneto-optical characteristics of ion-irradiated stainless steels in the vicinity of grain boundaries were estimated by AFM and Kerr effect microscope, respectively. These degradations were induced by changes in characteristics in the vicinity of grain boundaries. It is found that the initial level of progressing process of damage can detect changes in magnetic and corrosion properties along grain boundaries of aged and degraded nuclear plants structural materials.

Effect of air-oxidation on the thermal diffusivity of the nuclear grade 2-dimensional carbon fiber reinforced carbon/carbon composite

Materials Science Research International, 9(3), p.235 - 241, 2003/09

2D-C/C composite is one of the promising materials as a next-generation core material in gas-cooled reactors. Effect of air-oxidation on the thermal diffusivity up to 1673K of the 2D-C/C composite was investigated. The C/C composite specimens for measurement of thermal diffusivity were oxidized from 1 to 11 percent weight loss in air at 823K. Thermal diffusivity at room temperature declined 10$$sim$$20 percent for parallel to lamina direction and 5$$sim$$9 percent for that of perpendicular within 11 percent weight loss by oxidation. Thermal diffusivity tended to decrease gradually as the increase of oxidation loss in parallel to lamina, however, it decreased in the beginning of oxidation pretty much and not so changed by further oxidation loss in perpendicular to lamina. Change in thermal conductivity under oxidation condition was also estimated.

The 3mol% yttria containing tetragonal zirconia polycrystals(3Y-TZP) were irradiated using 130MeV Zr$$^{11+}$$ ions in the TANDEM accelerator facility at Tokai Research Establishment, JAERI. Irradiation was performed with the fluence of 3.5$$times$$10$$^{16}$$ and 2.1$$times$$10$$^{17}$$ ions/m$$^{2}$$. Residual stress and changes in mechanical properties caused by the ion irradiation and the effects of the subsequent annealing are studied. The occurrence of compressive residual stresses and increases in hardness and fracture toughness were found at the surface regions of as-irradiated specimens. It was found from the subsequent annealing that these quantities decreased gradually with raising the annealing temperature and returned to that of un-irradiated state at around 1173K. A most probable cause of the increases in the hardness and fracture toughness after the irradiation may, therefore, be the residual compressive stresses left in the irradiated surface region.

Neutron irradiation response of B2-type ordered alloys

Hoshiya, Taiji; Takaya, Shigeru; Nakagiri, Toshio; Aoto, Kazumi

Proceedings of 11th International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials (ICFRM-11), 0 Pages, 2003/00

Neutron irradiation response of a B2-type ordered alloy was obtained from the irradiation diagram. Two conflicting processes; irradiation disordering and ordering take place under irradiation and that state is decribed by the degree of Bragg-Williams's long range order and Warren-Cowley's short range order. The irradiated state reveals a function of temperature and dose rate and also, the first threshold value and the second threshold value were obtained at which the degree of order abruptly or gradually fall down, respectively. Our proposed irradiation diagram can be useful to judge the new material to be irradiation-resistant or not.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon-carbon Composites, C/C composites, have been developed and extensively studied their characteristics. C/C composites are considered to be promising materials for the application of a control rod in the next high performance high temperature gas-cooled reactors. In the present paper, details of the development of the candidate C/C composite are described. In the course of the development of the material, especially, feasibility of the production, stableness of the supply and cost are much taken into consideration. As the physical properties of the material, high mechanical strength such as tensile and bending, high fracture strain and fracture toughness and low dimensional change by neutron irradiation have to be met. The developed 2D-C/C composite consists of plain-weave PAN-based carbon fiber cloth and pitch derived matrix. Also, high purification up to the level of nuclear grade was successfully attained in the composite.

Ion irradiation effect on superplastic deformation behavior of ceramic material

Shibata, Taiju; Ishihara, Masahiro; Motohashi, Yoshinobu*; Baba, Shinichi; Hoshiya, Taiji; Sakuma, Takaaki*

Nihon Kikai Gakkai Kanto Shibu Ibaraki Koenkai (2002) Koen Rombunshu (No.020-3), p.123 - 124, 2002/09

Applications of superplastic ceramics to nuclear energy fields are very promising because of their superior mechanical and thermal properties. In this study, Zr ion irradiation effects on superplastic deformation behavior of a typical superplastic ceramic, 3mol% yttria containing tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP), were studied. Zr$$^{+11}$$ ions with 130MeV were irradiated on the 3Y-TZP specimens by TANDEM accelerator at fluence levels of 3.5x10$$^{16}$$ and 2.1x10$$^{17}$$ions/m$$^{2}$$. Their mechanical properties were examined by three-point bending test at elevated temperatures after the irradiation. As a result, at the temperature range from the room temperature to 1473K, any obvious irradiation effects were not found by the bending test. On the other hand, at the range from 1623K to 1773K, it was found that the superplastic deformation behavior was changed by the Zr ion irradiation. The activation energy of superplastic deformation was increased with increasing the irradiation fluence.
