Inelastic neutron scattering was performed for an iron-based superconductor, where most of D (deuterium) replaces oxygen, while a tiny amount goes into interstitial sites. By first-principle calculation, we characterize the interstitial sites for D (and for H slightly mixed) with four equivalent potential minima. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 26 K, new excitations emerge in the range 5-15 meV, while they are absent in the reference system LaFeAsO$$_{0.9}$$F$$_{0.1}$$. The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, where each energy becomes comparable to twice of the superconducting gap. The strong excitations are ascribed to a quantum rattling, or a band motion of hydrogen, which arises only if the number of potential minima is larger than two.

Magnetic excitations in a heavily electron-doped antiferromagnet, LaFeAsO$$_{0.5}$$D$$_{0.5}$$, have been investigated using powder inelastic neutron scattering. Unlike other parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors, the magnetic excitation gap in LaFeAsO$$_{0.5}$$D$$_{0.5}$$ was not detected down to the lowest measured temperature of 4 K. This result can be understood as a result of quasi-isotropy within the ab plane, which is consistent with the band calculation result that the $$d_{xy}$$ orbital plays the dominant role in the magnetism of LaFeAsO$$_{0.5}$$H$$_{0.5}$$. In addition, the intensities of the magnetic excitations in this phase are much stronger than those in nondoped LaFeAsO. Even in the paramagnetic phase, the magnetic excitation in LaFeAsO$$_{0.5}$$D$$_{0.5}$$ persists. These results corroborate recent studies showing that the electron doping enhances the localized nature in this system.

JAEA-Review 2012-046, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2011, P. 171, 2013/01

Fiscal year 2011 was significantly influenced by the East Japan Great Earthquake (March 11, 2011). The operation of the TIARA facility which was being planned from April started from the middle of May. Lost beam-time of the experiment due to the great earthquake was compensated with operations on Saturday biweekly. And it was obliged to re-examine the operation plan during the period of electric power reduction in July, August, and September. The demanded reduction rate of electric power in daytime for summer season was 15% as compared with 2010. The limited value in daytime was 3,600 kW. Therefore, the experiment in daytime was conducted with light ions (H, D with $$<$$ 20 MeV) only by the AVF Cyclotron. As mentioned above, the electric power in the daytime of summer did not exceed 3,200 kW. Moreover, the beam time as an ordinary year was secured.

We performed the neutron powder diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements on CeFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$(D,H)$$_{x}$$ ($$x$$ = 0.0-0.48) as a representative of 1111-type family of iron-based superconductors LnFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$H$$_{x}$$ ($$Ln$$ = lanthanoid). These results strongly suggest that H$$^{-}$$ ions exclusively occupy the oxygen sites in both samples, regardless of the hydrogen species in the starting material.

Electronic and magnetic properties of a layered compound LaMnPO are examined in relation to a newly discovered iso-structural superconductor LaFeAs(P)O. Neutron diffraction measurements, together with temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, clarify that LaMnPO is an antiferromagnet at least up to 375 K. The spin moment of a Mn ion is determined to be 2.26 $$mu_{B}$$ at room temperature, and the spin configuration is antiparallel in the Mn-P plane and parallel to between the Mn-P planes, which is rather different from that of LaFeAsO. Optical absorption spectra, photoemission spectra, and temperature dependent electrical conductivity indicate that LaMnPO is a semiconductor. Furthermore, nominally undoped LaMnPO exhibits $$n$$-type conduction while the conduction type is changed by doping of Cu or Ca to the La sites, indicating that LaMnPO is a bipolar conductor. Density functional calculation using the GGA+U approximation supports the above conclusions; the electronic band structure has an open band gap and the antiferromagnetic spin configuration is more stable than the ferromagnetic one.

The lattice dynamics of LaFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$F$$_x$$ ($$x$$=0, 0.1) and PrFeAsO$$_{1-y}$$ ($$ysim$$0.1) are investigated using inelastic X-ray scattering. Measurements of powder samples provide an approximation to the phonon DOS, while dispersion is measured from a single crystal of PrFeAsO$$_{1-y}$$. A model that agrees reasonably well with all of the data at room temperature is built from results of ab-initio calculations by reducing the strength of the Fe-As bond by 30%.

An advanced safety analysis computer code, SIMMER-III, has been developed to investigate postulated core disruptive accidents in liquid-metal fast reactors (LMFRs). SIMMER-III is a two-dimensional, three-velocity-field, multiphase, multicomponent, Eulerian, fluid-dynamics code coupled with a space-dependent neutron kinetics model. By completing and integrating all the physical models originally intended at the beginning of this code development project, SIMMER-III is now applicable to integral reactor calculations and other complex multiphase flow problems. A systematic code assessment program, conducted in collaboration with European research organizations, has shown that the advanced features of the code have resolved many of the limitations and problem areas in the previous SIMMER-II code. In this report, the models, numerical algorithms and code features of SIMMER-III Version 3.A are described along with detailed program description. Areas which require future model refinement are also discussed. SIMMER-III Version 3.A, a coupled fluid-dynamics and neutronics code system, is expected to significantly improve the flexibility and reliability of LMFR safety analyses.

An advanced safety analysis computer code, SIMMER-III, has been developed at Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) to more realistically investigate postulated core disruptive accidents in liquid-metal fast reactors. The two-dimensional framework of SIMMER-III fluid dynamics has been extended to three dimensions to a new code, SIMMER-IV, which is currently (in Version 2) coupled with the three-dimensional neutronics model. With the completion of the SIMMER-IV version, the applicability of the code is further enhanced and the many of the known limitations in SIMMER-III are eliminated. The sample calculations demonstrated the general validity of SIMMER-IV. This report describes SIMMER-IV Version 2.A, by documenting the models, numerical algorithms and code features, along with the program description and input and output information to aid the users.
