We show that the local spin correlation order has a spiral structure by neutron scattering measurement of a Mn$$_{3}$$RhSi single crystal. The possible origins of the magnetic cluster formation are discussed in terms of the Lifshitz invariant and the Griffiths phase, and compared with the room-temperature skyrmion phase of Co$$_{7}$$Zn$$_{7}$$Mn$$_{6}$$ and non-Fermi liquid behavior of $$beta$$-Mn.

Spin excitation of an ilmenite FeTiO$$_{3}$$ powder sample is measured by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The dynamic magnetic pair-density function $$D_{M}(r,E)$$ is obtained from the dynamic magnetic structure factor $$S_{M}(Q,E)$$ by the Fourier transformation.

Hydrogen vibration excitations of fluorite-type ZrH$$_{1.8}$$ and TiH$$_{1.84}$$ were investigated up to 21 GPa and 4 GPa, respectively, by incoherent inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The first excitation energies increased with pressure, as described by the equations $$E_1$$(meV) = 141.4(2) + 1.02(2)$$P$$(GPa) and $$E_1$$(meV) = 149.4(1) + 1.21(8)$$P$$(GPa) for ZrH$$_{1.8}$$ and TiH$$_{1.84}$$, respectively. Coupling with pressure dependence of lattice parameters, the relations between metal-hydrogen distance ($$d_{M-H}$$) and $$E_1$$ are found to be well described by the equations $$E_1$$(meV) = 1.62(9)$$times$$ 10$$^3$$ $$d_{M-H}^{-3.31(8)}$$($AA) and $E_1$$(meV) = 1.47(21)$$times$$ 10$$^3$$ $$d_{M-H}^{-3.5(2)}$$(AA), respectively. The slopes of these curves are much steep compared to the previously reported trend in various fluorite-type metal hydrides at ambient pressure. The hydrogen wave function spreading showed that the local potential field for a hydrogen atom shrinks more intensively than the tetrahedral site. These behavior is likely caused by the rigid metal ion core and the resulting confinement of the hydrogen atom in the narrower potential field at high pressures.

Crystal and magnetic structures of the mineral centennialite CaCu$$_{3}$$(OD)$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ $$cdot$$ 0.6D$$_{2}$$O are investigated by means of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements complemented by density functional theory (DFT) and pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) calculations. In CaCu$$_{3}$$(OD)$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ $$cdot$$ 0.6D$$_{2}$$O, Cu$$^{2+}$$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $$J_{1}$$. No intersite disorder between Cu$$^{2+}$$ and Ca$$^{2+}$$ ions is detected. CaCu$$_{3}$$(OD)$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ $$cdot$$ 0.6D$$_{2}$$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $$T_{rm N}$$ = 7.2 K, and the $$q$$=0 magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3 K is suppressed to 0.58(2)$$mu$$B. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $$J_{2}$$ and ferromagnetic $$J_{d}$$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$$frac{1}{2}$$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $$q$$=0 type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $$q$$=0 spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $$J_{1}$$-$$J_{2}$$-$$J_{d}$$ kagome antiferromagnet.

Recently there has been an increasing need for inelastic neutron scattering experiments under some special environments such as magnetic fields, pressure and high temperatures. In order to obtain high quality data, the unnecessary scattering caused by sample environmental apparatus should be suppressed as much as possible. We have developed an oscillating radial collimator with a view to satisfying users' needs, which is specialized for the Fermi chopper spectrometer 4SEASONS at J-PARC.4SEASONS provides relatively high incident energies, and thus we chose hydrogen free metal sheets as the collimator blades. The control system of this oscillating radial collimator enables us to flexibly tune the oscillating pattern, such as the oscillating speed and oscillating angle. In this presentation, we report the performances and remaining issues of the newly developed oscillating radial collimator for 4SEASONS.

The vibrational states of hydrogen atoms in bulk and nanocrystalline palladium were examined in a wide energy region $$0 le hbar omega le 300$$ meV using neutron spectroscopy. In bulk PdH$$_{0.73}$$, the vibrational excitations of H atoms were roughly reproduced by the quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) model. In PdH$$_{0.42}$$ nanocrystals with a diameter of 8 nm, however, additional vibrational excitations were found at energies above 80 meV. The energies and intensities of the additional states were not explained by QHO but reasonably described as vibrations in a highly anharmonic trumpet-like potential. The additional excitations are attributed to the vibrations of H atoms at tetrahedral sites in the subsurface region stabilized by surface effects. This is an experimental work which clearly detects hydrogen vibration ${it inside}$ metal nanoparticles.
