The accident of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. occurred due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, Sanriku offshore earthquake, of 9.0 magnitude and the accompanying tsunami. As a result, large amount of radioactive materials was released into the environment. Under these circumstances, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting "Long-term Assessment of Transport of Radioactive Contaminants in the Environment of Fukushima" concerning radioactive materials released in environment, especially migration behavior of radioactive cesium since November 2012. This report is a summary of the research results that have been obtained in environmental dynamics research conducted by JAEA in Fukushima Prefecture.

We assessed the repeatability and reproducibility of methods for determining low dissolved radiocesium concentrations in freshwater in Fukushima. Twenty-one laboratories pre-concentrated three of 10 L samples by five different pre-concentration methods (prussian-blue-impregnated filter cartridges, coprecipitation with ammonium phosphomolybdate, evaporation, solid-phase extraction disks, and ion-exchange resin columns), and activity of radiocesium was measured. The z-scores for all of the $$^{137}$$Cs results were within $$pm$$2, indicating that the methods were accurate. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) indicating the variability in the results from different laboratories were larger than the RSDs indicating the variability in the results from each separate laboratory.

The prediction of the distribution and fate of radioactive materials eventually deposited at surface in the Fukushima area is one of the main objectives and expected to be achieved in an efficient manner. In order to make such prediction, a number of mathematical models of radioactive contaminants, with particular attention on cesium, on the land and in rivers, lakes, and estuaries in the Fukushima area are developed. Simulation results are examined with the field investigations simultaneously implemented. The basic studies of the adsorption/absorption mechanism of cesium and soils have been performed to shed light on estimating distribution coefficient between dissolved contaminant and particulate contaminant.

As a part of research and development of an advanced fueled fast reactor, we carried out benchmark experiments in the FCA-XVII-1 core with MOX simulating fuel to obtain reference data to be compared with those measured in the FCA-XVI-1 and XVI-2 cores simulating metallic fueled FBR. Following nuclear characteristics were measured in the experiments: Criticality, reaction rate ratio, sample reactivity worth, sodium void reactivity effect and $$^{238}$$U Doppler effect. Extra measurements were performed in modified FCA-XVII-1 cores to obtain experimental data for various reactor types: (1) Measurement of sodium void reactivity effect in various plutonium isotope compositions, (2) Measurement of sodium void reactivity effect in a core where axial blanket was replaced with a sodium layer and (3) Measurement of various nuclear characteristics in a nitride fuel region. This report describes methods and results of the above experiments and method of analysis.

Fast reactor nuclear physics parameters calculation code system "EXPARAM"

Iijima, Susumu*; Kato, Yuichi*; Takasaki, Kenichi*; Okajima, Shigeaki

JAERI-Data/Code 2004-016, 91 Pages, 2004/12

JAERI-Data-Code-2004-016.pdf:7.45MB

The calculation code system "EXPARAM" was designed to analyze the experimental results systematically measured at the fast critical assembly (FCA). Some calculation codes developed independently in JAERI and in US research institutes were collected and arranged as the fast reactor physics calculation code system. The multi-group core calculation code and the perturbation calculation code based on the diffusion theory and the transport theory calculate the reactor physics parameters such as eigenvalue, reaction rate, Doppler reactivity worth and sodium void worth. The dynamic physics parameters such as prompt neutron lifetime and effective delayed neutron fraction are also calculated. Input and Output data of calculation codes are transferred to each other using a direct access file on UNIX computer system.
