Development of a non-destructive depth-selective quantification method for sub-percent carbon contents in steel using negative muon lifetime analysis

The amount of C in steel, which is critical in determining its properties, is strongly influenced by steel production technology. We propose a novel method of quantifying the bulk C content in steel non-destructively using muons. This revolutionary method may be used not only in the quality control of steel in production, but also in analyzing precious steel archaeological artifacts. A negatively charged muon forms an atomic system owing to its negative charge, and is finally absorbed into the nucleus or decays to an electron. The lifetimes of muons differ significantly, depending on whether they are trapped by Fe or C atoms, and identifying the elemental content at the muon stoppage position is possible via muon lifetime measurements. The relationship between the muon capture probabilities of C/Fe and the elemental content of C exhibits a good linearity, and the C content in the steel may be quantitatively determined via muon lifetime measurements. Furthermore, by controlling the incident energies of the muons, they may be stopped in each layer of a stacked sample consisting of three types of steel plates with thicknesses of 0.5 mm, and we successfully determined the C contents in the range 0.20 - 1.03 wt% depth-selectively, without sample destruction.

Sharing information of scientific research results on the Internet have developed in the global advancement of the open science today, such as archiving and disseminating scientific papers on institutional repositories, facilitating access to and use of research data etc. Accessibility to those contents in large volumes of information on the Internet is very important issue. Those contents might be grey literature without solving this accessibility issue. This presentation introduces the case study of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) Library as an example of efforts to improve circulation of research results in terms of grey literature. JAEA has disseminate information of our research results through the JAEA Originated Papers Searching System (JOPSS) on the Internet over decade, but we have three main issues to solve aiming at improving the accessibility of grey literature in the open science era; (1) to ensure accessibility of our Internet contents, (2) to consider how our target users find our contents, (3) to improve user interface of contents. We will continue to improve the system aiming to distribute various information of JAEA R&D results.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has developed the tensile strength prediction method at liquid helium temperature (4K) using the quadratic curve as a function of the content of carbon and nitrogen in order to establish the rationalized quality control of the austenitic stainless steel used in the ITER superconducting coil operating at 4K. ITER is under construction aiming to verify technical demonstration of a nuclear fusion generation. Toroidal Field Coil (TFC), one of superconducting system in ITER, have been started procurement of materials in 2012. JAEA is producing materials for actual product which are the forged materials with shape of rectangle, round bar, asymmetry and etc. JAEA has responsibility to procure all ITER TFC Structures. In this process, JAEA obtained many tensile strength of both room temperature and 4K about these structural materials, for example, JJ1: High manganese stainless steel for structure (0.03C-12Cr-12Ni-10Mn-5Mo- 0.24N) and 316LN: High nitrogen containing stainless steel (0.2Nitrogen). Based on these data, accuracy of 4K strength prediction method for actual TFC Structure materials was evaluated and reported in this study.

Improving the metadata of bibliographic information to enhance its access

Recently, a large quantity of digital contents is distributed on the Internet. Therefore, it is important for us to consider how we can add the value and increase the access to our library bibliographic information metadata. Availability from multiple channels and providing link to the full text may become a solution. This paper describes the case of Japan Atomic Energy Agency Library, as an example to improve our library database that is providing the R&D information (academic papers, oral presentation, and technical reports) of our institute. JAEA library provides this information through JAEA Originated Papers Searching System (JOPSS). This system was improved by providing access channels for the metadata and link to full text. In addition, user interface was constructed based on the information seeking behavior.

Dynamics of ion internal transport barrier (ITB) formation and impurity transport both in the Large Helical Device (LHD) heliotron and JT-60U tokamak are described. Significant differences between heliotron and tokamak plasmas are observed. The location of the ITB moves outward during the ITB formation regardless of the sign of magnetic shear in JT-60U and the ITB becomes more localized in the plasma with negative magnetic shear. In LHD, the low Te/Ti ratio ($$<$$ 1) of the target plasma for the high power heating is found to be necessary condition to achieve the ITB plasma and the ITB location tends to expand outward or inward depending on the condition of the target plasmas. Associated with the formation of ITB, the carbon density tends to be peaked due to inward convection in JT-60U, while the carbon density becomes hollow due to outward convection in LHD. The outward convection observed in LHD contradicts the prediction by neoclassical theory.

Transport analysis during the transient phase of heating (a dynamic transport study) applied to the plasma with internal transport barriers (ITBs) in the Large Helical Device (LHD) heliotron and the JT-60U tokamak is described. In the dynamic transport study the time of transition from the L-mode plasma to the ITB plasma is clearly determined by the onset of flattening of the temperature profile in the core region and a spontaneous phase transition from a zero curvature ITB (hyperbolic tangent shaped ITB) or a positive curvature ITB (concaved shaped ITB) to a negative curvature ITB (convex shaped ITB) and its back-transition are observed. The flattening of the core region of the ITB transition and the back-transition between a zero curvature ITB and a convex ITB suggest the strong interaction of turbulent transport in space.

A spontaneous transition phenomena between two meta-stable states of plasmas with internal transport barrier (ITB), that are characterized by different radial profiles of second derivative of ion temperature inside the ITB region where the ion temperature gradient is large, is observed in the steady-state phase of magnetic shear in the negative magnetic shear plasma in JT-60U tokamak. The curvature asymmetry factor evaluated from the radial profile of second derivative of ion temperature profiles changes from 0.08 (symmetric curvature ITB) to -0.43 (asymmetric curvature ITB) during transition phase.

A new technique to measure the first and second derivative of the ion temperature profile has been developed using a charge exchange spectroscopy system with space modulation optics. The space observed is scanned up to $$pm$$3 cm with a cosine wave modulation frequency up to 30 Hz by shifting the object lens in front of the optical fiber bundle by 0.5 mm with a piezoelement. The first and second derivatives of ion temperature are derived from the modulation component of the ion temperature measured using Fourier analysis.

We report on the applications of the ECH to the JT-60U tokamak. The ECH contributes to the advanced tokamak study in JT-60U in such respects as (1)NTM suppression, (2)Study on the internal transport barrier, (3)Impurity exhaust, (4)Tokamak start-up without center solenoid, (5)Current hole study, (6)Confinement and transport study, and (7)Start-up and shut-down assist. These contributions comes from the good local coupling of the ECH to the tokamak plasma.

Characterization of a monofunctional catalase KatA from radioresistant bacterium ${it Deinococcus radiodurans}$

Catalase plays a key role in protecting cells against toxic reactive oxygen species. Here we report on the cloning, purification and characterization of a catalase (KatA) from the extremely radioresistant bacterium ${it Deinococcus radiodurans}$. The size of purified ${it D. radiodurans}$ KatA monomer was 65 kDa while gel filtration revealed that the size of the enzyme was 240 kDa, suggesting that KatA formed a homotetramer in solution. Purified KatA displayed a final specific activity of 68,800 U/mg of protein. The catalase activity of KatA was inhibited by sodium azide, sodium cyanide and 3-amino-1, 2, 4-triazole. The absorption spectrum of KatA exhibited a Soret band at 408 nm. The position of the spectral peak remained unchanged following reduction of KatA with dithionite. No peroxidase activity was found for KatA. These results demonstrate that ${it D. radiodurans}$ KatA is a typical monofunctional heme-containing catalase. The stability of KatA with respect to H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ stress was superior to that of commercially available ${it Aspergillus niger}$ and bovine liver catalases. The relative abundance of KatA in cells in addition to the H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ resistance property may play a role in the survival strategy of ${it D. radiodurans}$ against oxidative damage.

An Estimation of microorganisms impacts on geological disposal system for TRU waste.

(1) The denitrifying bacteria, the sulfate restoration bacteria, the methanation bacteria and the organic substrate (the cement admixture, the cellulose and the asphalt, TBP) decomposing bacteria were extracted as the important microbes which can be active on the basis of both previous studies on the microbes in deep underground and coexisting substrate. (2) The total amount of calcium hydrate in the repository exceeded the equivalent amount of that for reacting the total Co$$_{2}$$ generated from microbial decomposition of organic substrate and phosphate generated from the microbial decomposition of TBP. Therefore, the impacts of lowering pH by the metabolic products was not considered to be significant. Furthermore, impacts of alteration of both bentonite and cementitious materials and metal corrosion due to the drop of pH are not considered to be significant. (3) The N$$_{2}$$ gas evolution rate due to the denitrifying reaction by microorganisms dominated the total gas evolution rate, if time dependent reduction of corrosion rate was employed. However, the H$$_{2}$$ gas evolution rate in the case is similar to those of N$$_{2}$$ gas due to the denitrifying reaction mentioned above, if time dependent reduction of corrosion rate was neglected. (4) The information of the impacts of the complex formation between nuclides and metabolic products of microbes, colloid formation (including the colloidal behavior of microbes) and $$^{14}$$CH$$_{4}$$ formation due to microbial activities is limited. The impacts are also considered to depend on the site character. Therefore the limited availability of information and site dependency prevent us from assessing the previous impacts at present. The further accumulation of knowledge is necessary for the assessments.
