A solidification technique with minimized water content is being developed using phosphate cements for the safe storage of secondary radioactive wastes in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Conventional cement systems become solidified via hydration reactions, and need a certain water content. Phosphate cement systems, however, become solidified via an acid-base reaction, and so they only require water mainly for reasons of workability. A reduced water content of phosphate cement systems is beneficial for the immobilization of the radioactive wastes from mitigating the potential to generate hydrogen gas by the radiolysis of water by radioactive wastes. The current study investigated the water content and mineralogy of calcium aluminate cement (CAC) and phosphate-modified CAC (CAP) cured in open systems at 60, 90 and 120 C and in a closed system at 20 C as a reference case. Water contents in both the CAC and the CAP were seen to decrease as curing progressed. For 90 C, the CAP contained less water than CAC. Free water in CAC converted to structural water by heat treatment, but this was not the case for CAP. An orthophosphate hydrate salt, a precursor phase of hydroxyapatite, was found in CAP when cured at 20 and 60 C, and a mixture of the orthophosphate hydrate salt and hydroxyapatite, Ca(PO)(OH), were formed in the CAP when cured at 90 C. Phosphate products in CAP cured at 120 C appears to consist of a different phosphate phase compared with the CAP cured at 20, 60 and 90 C.

We identified four -ray transitions via the C reaction using a germanium detector array, Hyperball2. The obtained level energies provide definitive references for the reaction spectroscopy of hypernuclei.

We investigated denitrification and methanogenesis in anoxic groundwater from 140 m depth in two boreholes, where the redox potential fluctuated. The average maximum potential denitrification rates, measured under anaerobic conditions in the two boreholes using an N tracer. Methanogenesis candidates were detected by 16S rRNA gene analysis. Although the stable isotope signatures suggested that some of the dissolved methane was of biogenic origin, no potential for methane production was evident during the incubations. The groundwater at 140 m depth did not contain oxygen, had an Eh ranging from -144 to 6.8 mV, and was found to be a potential field for denitrification.

In Japan Atomic Energy Agency Nuclear Science Research Institute waste treatment building No.2 treat intermediate-level solid waste. Solid wastes are reduced in volume by compaction. They are then canned in stainless can, which are subsequently put in 200-liter concrete-lined drums or 1-m concrete containers, filled with concrete. To prepare for disposal in future, be able to make fit with the technical standard of waste package, we were asked to change the lid type shielded container. Therefore due to the change of lid type shielded container, we confirmed integrity of it with evaluation of close volt by drop analysis, evaluation of shielding, and drop test with a prototype model.

A general control system for the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF-GCS) at J-PARC has an advanced and independent system for control of the mercury target, including a large amount of mercury, three moderators with supercritical hydrogen, and cooling systems with radioactive water. Although the MLF-GCS is an independent system, it works closely with the accelerator and other facility control systems within J-PARC. The MLF have succeeded in the first proton beam injection and neutron beam generation in May 2008, and succeeded the muon beams generation in September 2008. The design and construction of the MLF-GCS has finished before the first proton beam injection. It has been operated stably and efficiently in the off- and on- beam commissioning. This paper reports on the design, construction and operation of the MLF-GCS.

Times Cited Count:37 Percentile:91.11(Instruments & Instrumentation)To study the effects of swift heavy ion irradiation on cerium dioxide (CeO), CeO sintered pellets were irradiated with 200 MeV Xe ions at room temperature. For irradiated and unirradiated samples, the spectra of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were measured. XPS spectra for the irradiated samples show that the valence state of Ce atoms partly changes from +4 to +3. The amount of Ce state was quantitatively obtained as a function of ion-fluence. The relative amount of oxygen atom displacements, which are accompanied by the decrease in Ce valence state, is 3-5%. This value is too large to be explained in terms of elastic interactions between CeO and 200 MeV ions. The experimental result suggests the contribution of 200 MeV Xe induced electronic excitation to the displacements of oxygen atoms.

CeO thin films were irradiated with 200 MeV Xe ions. Effects of the irradiation were studied by using Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurement at SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility. EXAFS spectra for the irradiated thin films near the Ce K-edge show that the coordination number for oxygen atoms around Ce atom decreases and that the Ce-O Debye-Waller factor increases by the irradiation. The atomic distance between oxygen atom and Ce atom does not vary within the accuracy of EXAFS measurement. The effect of high density electronic excitation on the structure of CeO is discussed.

The New Crossover Project (NXO) is studying effect of fission irradiation on fuel material that research activity is crossing over universities, national and private laboratories. Simulation studies are being performed to find principal and triggering processes of the rim-structure formation in high burnup LWR fuel pellet, using accelerator irradiation and computational calculations. Accelerator irradiation, high energy electron irradiation, fission energy particle beam and ion implantation (ragegas atoms) and combined overlapping irradiations are being performed. For the target of irradiation, CeO isused as simulation of nuclear fuel. The initial results were such as planar structure made by Oxygen defects created by high energy electrons, and surface modification similar to grain-sub-division created by high fluence high energy particle irradiations.

Results of numerical analyses and field studies in the epicenter area of the 2000 Tottoriken-seibu earthquake suggest that several research techniques are effective for identifying subsurface active faults unaccompanied with remarkable surface earthquake faults. Field observation of the lineaments found in the area by detailed air-photo interpretation revealed that most of them are accompanied by faults and/or dikes, and some of them show minor slips at the time of the earthquake. Crustal deformation caused by the activity of the subsurface seismogenic faults is deduced by numerical analyses based on seismic and geodetic data. The vertical deformation assumed from the height changes of the terraces along the river across the epicenter area suggests that cumulative uplift and subsidence associated with left-lateral strike-slip has been continuing. Offsets rate of the streams and uplift rate of the river terraces surfaces show good agreement with the estimate from the parameter of the earthquake faults model. Identification of active faults without clear surface evidence before occurrence of earthquakes is a difficult issue, and the techniques adopted in this study will probably provide relevant information effective to locate subsurface active faults.

The transient current was measured using the single ion hit transient ion beam induced current (TIBIC) system at TIARA. As the results, peak intensity of transient current induded by ion irradiation increased and falltime decreased with increasing applied bias. By the integration of transient current, the charge collection was estimated. It was found that charges generated in deeper region beyond the depletion layer can be collected by the funneling effect.
