Radiation exposure and oxidative stress status of wild Japanese macaques in the ex-evacuation zone of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Ishikawa, Ryoya*; Suzuki, Masatoshi*; Kino, Yasushi*; Endo, Satoru*; Nakajima, Hiroo*; Oka, Toshitaka; Takahashi, Atsushi*; Shimizu, Yoshinaka*; Suzuki, Toshihiko*; Shinoda, Hisashi*; et al.

KEK Proceedings 2022-2, p.61 - 66, 2022/11

The balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant activity, which is a defense mechanism against oxidative stress, was investigated in the liver and bladder of wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima Prefecture. No significant induction of oxidative stress by exposure to environmental radionuclides after the Fukushima nuclear accident was observed, suggesting that the stress defense mechanism of the organism is activated in some organs.

The superconducting neutron detector using high-quality $$^{10}$$B-enriched MgB$$_2$$ thin films at higher operating temperatures has been proposed, where a resistance change induced by the nuclear reaction of neutron and $$^{10}$$B in MgB$$_2$$ is used to detect a neutron. Cold neutrons from a nuclear research reactor irradiated the MgB$$_2$$ detector, and the output voltage was clearly observed through a low-noise amplifier by using a digital oscilloscope. The out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics was investigated by means of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations by using the Earth Simulator.

With using $$^{17}F$$ RNB from CRIB, proton inelastic scattering was observed. From this experiment, some resonance parameters have been deduced for the key reaction, $$^{14}O(alpha,p)^{17}F$$ at the explosive hydrogen burning stage in stars. Proton inelastic scattering of $$^{23}Mg$$ are also reported.

In order to strengthen the functions of the self moving survey system, the design of the truck and the data transmission system, the investigation of the handling function and the durability test assumed under the disaster environment were executed. As the basic performance of the self moving survey system, it was demanded to have the functions in order to run on the bumpy road, go up and down the stairs and open and shut of the door. And the remote control by the PHS line or the SS wireless is adopted as an operational method. Moreover, as the function that can monitor the disaster situation in the facility, it was assumed the design that make modular the measurement equipments, which mainly measure alpha ray, gamma ray and neutron, and installed it.In consideration of the radiation monitoring under the environment that assumes the critical accident and a fire and the explosion etc. heat test, humidity test, radiation test, and aerosol (smoke) test for monitoring equipments were executed. As a result of the tests, it was confirmed that all equipment except the semiconductor detector operated normally.

Influence on the oxidative stress status in liver and bladder of wild Japanese macaques in response to radiation exposure in the ex-evacuation zone of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

In order to investigate the influence on the oxidative stress status by the long-term exposure after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear power plant (FNPP) accident, we analyzed oxidative stress markers in liver and bladder of wild Japanese macaques in the ex-evacuation zone. In liver, the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in approximately 70% of the exposed group exceeded the average and SOD activity of the exposed group shifted toward lower within the range indicated in the control group. By contrast, alteration of MDA concentration and SOD activity in bladder was opposite to that shown in liver. We also found that oxidative stress markers changed in the same manner by external and internal exposure. Our data suggested that exposure to low dose/low dose-rate radiation following the FNPP accident may affect the sensitivity to oxidative stress by changing the activity of antioxidant enzymes.
