Development of the DICOM-based Monte Carlo dose reconstruction system for a retrospective study on the secondary cancer risk in carbon ion radiotherapy

Carbon ion radiotherapy has an advantage over conventional radiotherapy such that its superior dose concentration on the tumor helps to reduce unwanted dose to surrounding normal tissues. Nevertheless, a little dose to normal tissues, which is a potential risk of secondary cancer, is still unavoidable. The Monte Carlo simulation is a good candidate for the tool to assess secondary cancer risk, including the contributions of secondary particles produced by nuclear reactions. We therefore developed a new dose reconstruction system implementing PHITS as the engine. In this system, the PHITS input is automatically created from the DICOM data sets recorded in the treatment planning. The developed system was validated by comparing to experimental dose distribution in water and treatment plan on an anthropomorphic phantom. This system will be used for retrospective studies using the patient data in National Institute for Quantum and Science and Technology.

Spin-state transition, also known as spin crossover, plays a key role in diverse systems. In theory, the boundary range between the low- and high-spin states is expected to enrich the transition and give rise to unusual physical states. However, no compound that realizes a nearly degenerate critical range as the ground state without requiring special external conditions has yet been experimentally identified. This study reports that the Sc substitution in LaCoO3 destabilizes its nonmagnetic low-spin state and generates an anomalous paramagnetic state accompanied by the enhancement of transport gap and magneto-lattice-expansion as well as the contraction of Co-O distance with the increase of electron site transfer. These phenomena are not well described by the mixture of conventional low- and high-spin states, but by their quantum superposition occurring on the verge of a spin-state transition.

Oceanic dispersion of Fukushima-derived Cs-137 simulated by multiple oceanic general circulation models

This study simulates the oceanic dispersion of Fukushima-derived Cs-137 by an oceanic dispersion model and multiple oceanic general circulation models. The models relatively well reproduced the observed Cs-137 concentrations in the coastal, offshore, and open oceans. Multiple simulations in the coastal, offshore, and open oceans consistently suggested that Cs-137 dispersed along the coast in the north-south direction during the first few months post-disaster, and were subsequently dispersed offshore by the Kuroshio Current and Kuroshio Extension. Quantification of the Cs-137 amounts suggested that Cs-137 actively dispersed from the coastal and offshore oceans to the open ocean, and from the surface layer to the deeper layers in the North Pacific.

Low reproducibility of dose distribution in inhomogeneous regions such as soft matter near bones is known with the simple dose analysis currently adopted in treatment planning of particle cancer therapy. Therefore a treatment planning system based on Monte Carlo simulation having better accuracy is highly desired. In order to assess the simulation accuracy of a Monte Carlo simulation code in situations closely related to medical application, we performed a comparison of dose distribution in a biological sample obtained by experiment and that by simulation. In particular, we irradiate a carbon beam on a biological sample composed of fresh chicken meat and bones, with a PAGAT gel dosimeter placed behind it, and compare the complex dose distribution in the gel dosimeter created by the beam passing through the inhomogeneous sample. Monte Carlo simulation using PHITS code was conducted by reconstructing the biological sample from its computed tomography images. The simulation accurately reproduced the experimental distal edge structure of the dose distribution with an accuracy under about 2 mm.

Ocean diffusion concentration maps were developed to gain an understanding of the migration behavior of contaminated water leaking from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. We used ensemble mean values to define the semi-climatological seasonal field in our calculations of the trajectories of the contaminated water. The maps were validated by conducting actual release events in two different seasons. The results showed that despite their simplicity, the proposed methods yield relatively good results.

In Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System PHITS, two parallel computing functions are prepared to reduce the computational time. One is the distributed-memory parallelization using message passing interface (MPI) and the other is the shared-memory parallelization using OpenMP directives. Each function has advantages and disadvantages, and thus, by adopting both functions in PHITS, it is possible to conduct parallel computing suited for needs of users. It is also possible to conduct the hybrid parallelization by the intra-node OpenMP parallelization and the inter-node MPI parallelization in supercomputer systems. Each parallelization functions were explained together with some application results obtained using a workstation and a supercomputer system, K computer at RIKEN.

We study the radiological characteristics of VIP polymer gel dosimeters under carbon beam irradiation with energy of 135 and 290 AMeV. To evaluate dose response of VIP polymer gels, the transverse relaxation rate R2 of the dosimeters measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a function of linear energy transfer (LET), rather than penetration depth, as is usually done in previous reports. LET is evaluated by use of the particle transport simulation code PHITS. Our results reveal that the dose response decreases with increasing dose-averaged LET and that the response-LET relation also varies with incident carbon beam energy. The latter can be explained by taking into account the contribution from fragmentation products. Furthermore, as an application of the evaluated response-LET relation, we compare the measured and simulated R2 distribution in a VIP gel formed by heterogeneous irradiation and obtain agreement in overall distribution and range within an accuracy of 5% and 1-2 mm, respectively.

Drift simulation of tsunami debris in the North Pacific

A drift simulation of tsunami debris flushed out from the Tohoku district, Japan, into the North Pacific due to the tsunami on March 11, 2011, has been conducted to monitor and forecast the drift path over the North Pacific. Results showed that tsunami debris was first transported eastward by the intense Kuroshio Extension and westerly, spreading in the north and south directions by both an energetic ocean eddy and a storm track over the ocean. Tsunami debris with larger windage was transported over the North Pacific by ocean surface wind rather than ocean current and arrived at the west coast of the North American Continent in the fall of 2011. Tsunami debris located near the North American Continent migrated, associated with the basin-scale seasonal change in the atmospheric pressure pattern. Our forecast run suggested that the tsunami debris belt will be formed from the North American Continent in the east to the Philippines in the west.

Intercomparison of numerical simulations on oceanic dispersion of the radioactive cesium released because of the Fukushima disaster

Numerical simulations on oceanic dispersion of the radioactive cesium in the North Pacific from March 2011 to September 2013 were conducted to clarify the concentration of the radioactive cesium released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. We implemented the oceanic dispersion simulations with two independent ocean reanalysis dataset. It was suggested that the $$^{137}$$Cs concentration in the North Pacific was lower than the pre-Fukushima background level about two years after the Fukushima disaster. The intercomparison revealed that meso-scale eddies in the Kuroshio Extension region may have efficiently diluted the radioactive cesium concentration at the sea surface. In addition, it was suggested that the enhanced downward current accompanied by the meso-scale eddies played an important role in transporting the radioactive cesium into the intermediate layer.

The structural relaxation caused by the high-energy-ion irradiation of CeO$$_{2}$$ with Gd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ addition was simulated by the molecular dynamics method. The amount of Gd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ was changed. As the initial condition, high thermal energy was supplied to the individual atoms within a cylindrical region of nanometer-order radius located in the center of the specimen. The potential proposed by Inaba et al. was utilized to calculate interaction between atoms. The supplied thermal energy was first spent to change the crystal structure into an amorphous one within a short period of about 0.3 ps, then it dissipated in the specimen. By increasing the concentration of Gd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, more structural disorder was observed in the sample, which is consistent to the actual experiment.

As the initial condition, high kinetic energy was supplied to the individual atoms within a cylindrical region of nanometer-order radius located in the center of the specimen. The potential proposed by Basak et al. was utilized to calculate interaction between atoms. The supplied kinetic energy was first spent to change the crystal structure into an amorphous one within a short period of about 0.3 ps, then it dissipated in the specimen. The amorphous track radius $$R_{rm a}$$ was determined as a function of the effective stopping power $$g$$$$S_{rm e}$$, i.e., the kinetic energy of atoms per unit length created by ion irradiation ($$S_{rm e}$$: electronic stopping power, $$g$$: energy transfer ratio from stopping power to lattice vibration energy).

Because of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, some radionuclides were released into the ocean from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. In response to this situation, numerical experiments were carried out at Japan Atomic Energy Agency using an oceanic dispersion model and an ocean general circulation model to estimate an effect of the radionuclides on marine environment. It was suggested that the radionuclides deposited from the atmosphere mainly in the middle of March after the disaster spread over a comparatively wide area of the Pacific Ocean east of Japan. On the other hand the radionuclides directly released into the ocean from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant were carried along the coast and then spread along the Kuroshio extension.

A new supercomputer system was deployed at JAEA in March 2010. The system is mainly composed of a large scale Linux cluster system (PRIMERGY BX900: 200Tflops) and a lead off system of RIKEN's K computer (FX1: 12Tflops), whose purposes are to deliver a high-performance parallel computing environment and application code development environment for the K computer, respectively. In this report, we present results of the evaluation of fundamental performance of the system.

Numerical experiments were carried out to predict the spreading of $$^{131}$$I and $$^{137}$$Cs released into the ocean due to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant incident. Results in the numerical experiments were in good agreement with the concentrations of $$^{131}$$I and $$^{137}$$Cs in the monitoring data. It was suggested that the high $$^{131}$$I concentration detected in the young lancefish caught off Kitaibaraki city was due to the deposition from the atmosphere. The numerical experiments suggest that the deposition of radionuclides released into the atmosphere in the middle March largely effected the concentrations of radionuclides east of Japan in the Pacific Ocean.

A Study of released radionuclide in the coastal area from a discharge pipe of nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, Aomori, Japan

When the reprocessing plant is in routine operation, radionuclides are released to the coastal ocean as scheduled. Released radionuclides migrate in the ocean by physical, chemical and biological processes. Thus, for environmental safety, it is important to understand the migration behavior due to routine releases of radionuclides to the coastal ocean from the reprocessing plant. A numerical simulation model system that consists of an ocean general circulation model and a particle random-walk model to describe the radionuclide migration behavior in Rokkasho coastal region has been developed. The particle random-walk model, SEA-GEARN, calculates the radionuclides migration in the ocean. The system has been applied to simulate the nowcast of Rokkasho coastal region in 2007 and hypothetical radionuclide release has been carried out.

An Approach to DNA crystallization using the thermal reversible process of DNA duplexes

We propose a technique for DNA crystallization using the thermal reversible process of DNA: a conversion between a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) and two single-stranded DNAs (ssDNAs) with temperatures. We investigated the solubility of the crystals of a DNA hexamer d(CGCGCG) and their melting temperature, at which the thermal conversion occurs. The results obtained suggest that the conversion from a dsDNA to ssDNAs results in an increase in solubility. It was shown that using this temperature-controlled technique, high-grade single crystals of the DNA hexamer could be obtained from a small amount of DNA samples. This easy-to-apply technique would be superior to the conventional vapor diffusion technique in that it allows the solubility of DNA crystals to be controlled with no need for expensive setups.

Study on $$^{99}$$Mo production by Mo-solution irradiation method, 3; Activation analysis of irradiation target

The impurity concentration in both (NH$$_{4}$$)$$_{6}$$Mo$$_{7}$$O$$_{24}$$ and K$$_{2}$$MoO$$_{4}$$ solutions, which are selected as advanced targets of Mo-solution irradiation method for $$^{99}$$Mo production, was determined by the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) using k$$_{0}$$-standardization method. As a result, Na, Mn and W were identified as impurities in the as received molybdate. After the compatibility test with structural material (SUS304) under $$gamma$$-ray irradiation, activation analysis of molybdate solutions was also carried out. It was found that the identified impurity concentration was stably staying in solutions and no element comes from the structural material by the NAA method. However, small corrosion of structural material was observed from the ICP measurement.

Development on $$^{99}$$Mo production technology by molybdenum solution irradiation method

$$^{99m}$$Tc for the medical diagnosis is the most widely used radioisotope in the world and it's demand is growing up year by year. In case of Japan, all $$^{99}$$Mo which is parent nuclide of $$^{99m}$$Tc, is imported. However, the importance of the domestic production is pointed out from a viewpoint of the stable supply of $$^{99}$$Mo because of some troubles on transportation or the research reactor, and so on. Therefore, the (n,$$gamma$$) method using solid molybdenum target had been planned in JMTR. However, it will be difficult to satisfy domestic demand because of the limited irradiation volumes of the hydraulic rabbit irradiation facility. In order to increase the amount of $$^{99}$$Mo production, the molybdenum solution irradiation method was proposed as a new production method. This method is based on the neutron irradiation of molybdenum solution, and several advantages can be pointed out such as a large irradiation volume, high efficient and low cost comparing with conventional methods using enriched $$^{235}$$U(n,f)$$^{99}$$Mo as the major method or using a solid molybdenum target of MoO$$_{3}$$ as the minor (n,$$gamma$$) method. Aiming at the realization of the molybdenum solution irradiation method, un-irradiated and $$gamma$$ ray irradiated tests of the molybdenum solution were carried out, and the data of chemical stability and compatibility with the structural materials were shown.

Development of a system for the prediction of radionuclide migration in the off Shimokita region and its case study

The radionuclides migration forecasting system in the off Shimokita region has been developed to predict the routine and accidental releases of liquid radioactive wastes during the operations of a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Aomori prefecture, Japan. The results obtained from the case studies are as follows; (1) The ocean general circulation model by using the techniques of data assimilation and nesting reproduced well the flow pattern of a coastal area. (2) The estimated internal dose due to ingestion of marine products from hypothetical release of $$^{3}$$H was 0.45 $$mu$$Sv/y. (3) The results of hypothetical release of $$^{137}$$Cs showed that about four percent of the whole deposited on the seabed after a 60-day calculation. The concentration of $$^{137}$$Cs of hypothetical release from the off Shimokita region is the same or less than that of global fallout measured at the same area.
