JAEA has been developing 9Cr-oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) tempered martensitic steel(TMS) as a candidate material for the fuel cladding tubes of sodium-cooled fast reactors(SFRs). The reliable prediction of in-reactor creep-rupture strength is critical for implementing the 9Cr-ODS TMS cladding tube in the SFR. This study investigated the quantitative correlation between the creep properties of 9Cr-ODS TMS at 700 $$^{circ}$$C and the dispersions of nanosized oxides by analyzing the creep data and the material's nanostructure. The possibility of deriving a formula for estimating the in-reactor creep properties of 9Cr-ODS TMSs based on an analysis of the nanostructure of neutron-irradiated 9Cr-ODS TMSs was also discussed. The creep properties of 9Cr-ODS TMS at 700 $$^{circ}$$C closely correlated with the dispersion of nanosized oxide particles. The correlation between creep-rupture lives and nanosized oxide particle dispersion was determined using existing creep models. The elucidation of correlation between the stress exponent of secondary creep rate and the nanostructure is essential to enhance future modeling reliability and formulation.

Recently, $$^{177}$$Lu is considered as one of the most important medical RIs for treating neuroendocrine tumors. A plan to produce $$^{177}$$Lu with high purity by using enriched $$^{176}$$Yb samples with irradiation of deuteron beams in accelerators has been discussed. However, since the other Yb isotopes contained in the Yb sample interacts with deuterons, Lu isotopes other than $$^{177}$$Lu are produced as impurities. Since the purity of $$^{177}$$Lu is important for medical use, a method to evaluate the impurity of Lu has been required. In this study, we proposed a new method to estimate production yields of each Lu isotopes in Yb samples with arbitrary isotopic compositions by using excitation functions of Yb($$d,x$$)Lu reactions and the particle transport calculation code PHITS. The method plays an important role in discussing the isotopic composition of enriched samples to produce high-purity $$^{177}$$Lu using accelerators.

Tsai, P.-E.; Iwamoto, Yosuke; Hagiwara, Masayuki*; Sato, Tatsuhiko; Ogawa, Tatsuhiko; Satoh, Daiki; Abe, Shinichiro; Ito, Masatoshi*; Watabe, Hiroshi*

Proceedings of 2017 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (NSS/MIC 2017) (Internet), 3 Pages, 2018/11

The energy spectra of primary knock-on atoms (PKAs) are essential for radiation damage assessment in design of accelerator facilities. However up to date the experimental data are still limited, due to the poor mass resolution and the high measurement threshold energies in the conventional setup of nuclear physics experiments using solid state detectors, which are typically above a few MeV/nucleon. In this study, a novel detection system consisting of two time detectors and one dE-E energy detector is proposed and being constructed to measure the PKA spectra. The system and detector design was based on Monte Carlo simulations by using the PHITS code. The PHITS simulations show that the system is able to distinguish the PKA isotopes above $$sim$$0.2-0.3 MeV/nucleon for A=20$$sim$$30 amu; the PKA mass identification thresholds decrease to $$<$$0.1 MeV/nucleon for PKAs lighter than 20 amu. The detection system will be tested in the summer of 2017, and the test results will be presented at the conference.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements on particular phonons of a superconducting (SC) Ca$$_{10}$$Pt$$_4$$As$$_8$$(Fe$$_{1-x}$$Pt$$_x$$As)$$_{10}$$ with the onset transition temperature $$T_c sim 33$$ K to investigate mainly what roles orbital fluctuation plays in Cooper pairing, where we observed a slight softening of the in-plane transverse acoustic mode corresponding to the elastic constant $$C_{66}$$. This softening starts at temperature $$T$$ well above the SC $$T_c$$, as $$T$$ decreases. An anomalously strong change of the scattering intensity of in-plane optical modes was observed at the M point of the pseudo tetragonal reciprocal space in the range of 35 $$< omega <$$ 40 meV with decreasing $$T$$ from far above $$T_c$$. Because this $$omega$$ region mainly corresponds to the motion of Fe and As atoms in the FeAs planes, the finding presents information on the coupling between the orbital fluctuation of Fe $$3d$$ electrons and the lattice system, useful for studying the possible roles of orbital fluctuation in the pairing mechanism and/or the appearance of the so-called nematic phase.

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been developed a plant dynamics code VIBUL to simulate the concentration distributions of the dissolved gas and the bubbles in a fast reactor. In this study, the VIBUL code is improved to achieve accurate simulations, e.g. rigorous mole conservation of inert gas. Moreover, new modles are introduced to simulate the small bubble behaviors in the J-PARC mercury target system. To validate the improved models and the newly developed models, the inert gas behaviors in the large-scale sodium-cooled reactor and the small bubble behaviors are simulated. As a result, it is confirmed that the complicated bubble dynamics in each component, e.g. core, IHX or surge tank, can be simulated appropriately by the VIBUL code.

The paper describes developments of neutron scattering instruments in J-PARC neutron facility, which is a short pulse spallation source operated at a repetition rate 25 Hz and has a proton power 1 MW. New concept has been adopted to utilize high intensity coupled moderator even for a high resolution inelastic scattering instruments by taking a pulse shaping chopper system. Advanced technique has been also realized by taking an ability of event-recording system altogether with an improvement of a chopper system, realizing multi-Ei method. The paper also touches upon a general design concept for diffractometers in accordance with the source characteristics.

3 GeV Protons with 1 MW beam power are irradiated to mercury target of spallation neutron source in Materials and Life science Facility (MLF), which is one of facilities of J-PARC. Irradiated components, such as target container, moderator, reflector and proton beam window, are needed to replace periodically due to irradiation damage of high energy protons and neutrons. These used components are replaced remotely because of highly activated. Maintenance scenario was settled so as to handle these components. Required remote handling machines were designed and installed in hot cell and other room of the MLF. We performed remote handling tests by using actual components to confirm the design. We report results, such as replacement procedure, trouble and its solution, etc., for moderator, reflector and proton beam window in order to provide the handling of actual used components.
