Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) at Tono Geoscience Center (TGC) is pursuing a geoscientific research and development project namely the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project in crystalline rock environment in order to construct scientific and technical basis for geological disposal of High-level Radioactive Waste (HLW). The MIU Project has three overlapping phases: Surface-based Investigation phase (Phase I), Construction phase (Phase II), and Operation phase (Phase III). The MIU Project has been ongoing the Phase III, as the Phase II was concluded for a moment with the completion of the excavation of horizontal tunnels at GL-500m level in February 2014. This report presents the results of the investigations, construction and collaboration studies in fiscal year 2014.

From numerical simulations of the amplification processes of high-order harmonic pulses in the undulator, optimum conditions of the electron bunch duration interacting with the high-order harmonic pulses were investigated for generating full-coherent and intense pulses in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region.

When the amplification conditions were fulfilled, strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 650 was observed. The random and uncontrollable spikes, which appeared in the spectra of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) based FEL radiation without the seeding source, were found to be suppressed drastically to form to a narrow-band, single peak profile at 61.2 nm. The properties of the seeded FEL radiation were well reproduced by numerical simulations. We discuss the future precept of the seeded FEL scheme to the shorter wavelength region.

We performed normal mode analysis of the elastic network model on integrin ectodomain in the bent form and identified key residues which were influential on molecular motions. Iterative normal mode calculations demonstrated that the specific non-bonded interactions involving the key residues work as a snap to keep integrin in the bent form. The importance of the key residues for the conformational change was further verified by mutation experiments. Conservation pattern of amino acid residues among integrin family showed that the characteristic pattern of residues seen around these key residues is found in the limited groups of integrin chains.

The methods are adjustment of inert matrix ratio in fuel in each burn-up cycle, multi-region design in terms of pin radius or inert matrix content, and modification of the level of the beam window position and the height of the central fuel assemblies. As the result, we optimized the ADS combined with the adjustment of inert matrix ratio in each burn-up cycle, multi-region design in terms of inert matrix content and deepened window level. The maximum temperatures of the optimized ADS at the surface of the cladding tube and the beam window were reduced by 91 and 38 C, respectively.

Three different fuel cycle scenarios involving PT technology were analyzed: (1) partitioning process only (separation of some fission products), (2) transmutation process only (separation and transmutation of minor actinides), and (3) both partitioning and transmutation. The necessary predisposal storage periods for some predefined emplacement configurations were determined through transient thermal analysis. For each scenario, we also estimated the storage capacity required for dry storage. The contributions of PT technology on the storage and disposal were discussed holistically, and we noted that the coupled introduction of partitioning and transmutation processes can bring an appreciable reduction in waste management size.

The equation has the same form as the conventional equation containing keff. The variables of the equation are the number of the fission neutrons and the delayed neutron precursors, and the coefficients are the multiplication factors of a prompt fission neutron, a delayed neutron and a source neutron. In the equation derived here, all variables and coefficients have each clear physical meaning. Analytic, deterministic and probabilistic calculations of the equation are performed for an accelerator-driven system.

Integrin, a membrane protein with a huge extracellular domain, participates in cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions for metazoan. A group of integrins are known to perform a large-scale structural change when they are activated, but their mechanism and generality of the conformational change in other integrins remain to be elucidated. We performed normal mode analysis based on the elastic network models of integrin in the bent form to identify key residues dominating the molecular motions toward activation. We simulated the large conformational change of integrin from the bent to the extended forms by iterative normal mode calculations and demonstrated that specific non-bonded interactions involving the key residues work as a snap to lock integrin in the bent form. The importance of the key residues for the conformational change was verified by mutation experiments.

Concerning safety characteristics of FBR core with hydride control materials, representative accidents for design basis and those beyond the design basis were selected and transient responses were evaluated. Based on this result, it was concluded that no unfavorable response was expected for this option.
