The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

Severe weight loss was observed in PSSA-grafted cPTFE and ETFE films but not in a PSSA-grafted PEEK film. The decomposed extracts in water were characterized as PSSA during the whole course of degradation, clearly showing that the PSSA grafts detached from the fluorinated substrates without decomposition or scission of graft polymer chains. This is quite a new degradation manner for graft-type polymer electrolyte membranes; namely, hydrophilic PSSA grafts detach from hydrophobic polymer substrates due to swelling-induced stress at the interfacial boundary in the grafted films.

Authors developed a radiotracer method for diffusion studies in solids. The experimental test was performed by the measurement of the diffusion coefficients of Li in a sample of the compound LiAl using an -emitting radiotracer of Li(T = 0.84 s). It was found that the time-dependent yields of the alpha particles from the diffusing 8Li that was initially implanted in the sample could be used as a measure of the diffusivity of the tracer in a nondestructive way. The method was applied to measure the self-diffusion coefficients of Li in LiGa, and for investigating how the Li diffusion in the Li ionic conductors is affected by the concentration of atomic defects.

Degradation mechanism of the graft-type polymer electrolyte membranes prepared by radiation techniques in the hot water have been studied in detail using UV-vis, GPC, NMR, and wide-angle X-ray scattering. The hydrothermal stability is found to be strongly related to the phase separation of the ion-containing hydrophilic grafts and hydrophobic polymers.

Detachment of sulfonated grafts in graft-type polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) were observed in hot water. The detachment is assisted by the interface stress between swelling of the hydrophilic grafts and hydrophobic polymer substrates. The grafted PEM with a clear phase separation structure, observed by small angle neutron scattering (SANS), are subjected to fast detachment of the grafts.

The degradation behavior of graft-type polymer electrolyte membranes consisting of hydrophilic sulfo-containing graft polymers (grafts) in hydrophobic polymer substrates are examined; We employed poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA) as a hydrophilic grafts and crosslinked poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (cPTFE), poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE), and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as a hydrophobic plastic substrate. PSSA-grafted cPTFE, ETFE, and PVDF films are degraded with more than 30 % weight loss in 85 C for 500 hours. The good agreement between losses of sulfo groups and film weights indicated that only PSSA grafts degraded from cPTFE, ETFE, and PVDF substrates. Using UV, NMR, and GPC, the decomposed extracts in water are confirmed to be PSSA with the same molecular weights. Furthermore, since the elemental analysis of the extracts did not have fluorine atoms, the grafts in all the PSSA-grafted films detach from the fluorinated substrates without decomposition. This is quite new degradation mode of graft-type polymer electrolyte membranes. By taking advantages of the interface abruption of swelled grafts, the chemically and thermally stable grafts attached onto the plastic films can be isolated and analyzed without special treatments.

In the present experiment, to obtain the fundamental knowledge of radiation effects on CeO, CeO pellets and films were irradiated with various energetic ions. To evaluate the effect of high energy ion irradiation on CeO, we have used a con-ventional X-ray diffraction (XRD), Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and SQUID magne-tometer. In this symposium, we discuss the effects of ion irradiation on CeO.
