Generally, both phases in which a barocaloric effect occurs are present at ambient pressure. Here, instead, we demonstrate that KPF exhibits a colossal barocaloric effect due to the creation of a high-pressure rhombohedral phase. The phase diagram is constructed based on pressure-dependent calorimetric, Raman scattering, and neutron diffraction measurements. The present study is expected to provide an alternative routine to colossal barocaloric effects through the creation of a high-pressure phase.

A new isomer with a half-life of 160 s has been discovered in Rf, and it is interpreted as a three-quasiparticle high- isomer. Neutron configurations of one-quasiparticle states in No, the -decay daughter of Rf, have been assigned on the basis of -decay hindrance factors. Excitation energies of the 1/2[620] states in =151 isotones indicate that the deformed shell gap at =152 increases with the atomic number.

Low-temperature absorption and fluorescence spectra of the Yb3+ ions were measured in phosphate glass with compositions of (60-65)PO-(4-8)BO-(5-10)AlO-(10-15)KO-(5-10)BaO-(0-2)LaO-(0-2)NbO-(4-87)YbO in mol-%. Temperature dependence of lifetime from F upper level of YB was investigated with a cryostat. The glass laser performance pumped by 940 nm laser diode was measured at different temperature range. At 8 K, glass laser oscillation had a slope efficiency of 4% and a maximum power of 2 mW at the peak laser wavelength of 1001 nm.

In the glass forming process, newly developed OH removing technology was adopted. From the reduction of OH concentration in the glass, upper state fluorescence lifetime reached 2.2 ms. Additionally, the glass shows remarkable athermal property of 0.4210E/K, which is around one-tenth of QX/Yb glass.

Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) is a sensitive method for detection of defects such as vacancies, vacancy clusters and nano-voids. The positron probe microanalyzer (PPMA) in AIST can investigate defect distribution of materials using a scanning positron microbeam. For the application of the PPMA for analysis of such materials it is important to consider the defects introduced during the sample preparation. we are investigating two kinds of sample preparation process, electrical discharge machining (EDM) and colloidal silica polishing after EDM. We are studying the depth dependence of the density of the defects induced by these processes in various metals, including SUS316L, using PAS.

We are studying the depth dependence of the density of the defects induced by the electrical discharge machining (EDM) in SUS316L, using the electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). EPMA results show a large change in the composition over the first 10 m. This layer can be assumed to correspond to the recast layer. PALS and XRD results suggest a defect layer with a thickness of around 50 m. This depth can be assumed to correspond to the heat affected zone where dislocations and vacancy clusters exists. For PALS (and other methods) analysis, it is recommended to remove the topmost 100 m of the samples by chemical polishing after EDM.
