IP values of heavy actinides beyond einsteinium (Es, Z = 99), however, have not been determined experimentally so far due to the difficulty in obtaining these elements on scales of more than one atom at a time. Recently, we successfully measured IP of lawrencium (Lr, Z = 103) using a surface ionization method. The result suggests that Lr has a loosely-bound electron in the outermost orbital. In contrast to Lr, nobelium (No, Z = 102) is expected to have the highest IP among the actinide elements owing to its full-filled 5f and the 7s orbitals. In the present study, we have successfully determined IP values of No as well as fermium (Fm, Z = 100) and mendelevium (Md, Z = 101) using the surface ionization method. The obtained results indicate that the IP value of heavy actinoids would increase monotonically with filling electrons up in the 5f orbital like heavy lanthanoids.

Batch-wise extraction of carrier-free radiotracers Mo and W were carried out from 0.10 - 8.6 M HSO and 1.010 - 5.0 M HF/1.0 M HCl into toluene with a quaternary ammonium compound, Aliquat336. Anionic sulfate complexes of Mo and W with charge - 2 were extracted with Aliquat336 from HSO solutions with concentrations of [HSO] 2 M. In HF/1.0 M HCl, oxyfluoro complexes of Mo and W with charge - 1 were interpreted to be formed and extracted with Aliquat336. From these results, favorable conditions for the extraction of Sg are discussed.

The ionization potential of the elements have not been determined so far due to their low production rates and/or their short half-lives. Based on a relationship between the ionization efficiency and the ionization potential obtained via measurements of short-lived lanthanide isotopes, the ionization potentials of these actinide elements have been successfully determined.

The short-lived thallium isotopes were produced at the JAEA tandem accelerator. The thallium ion beam prepared with an on-line isotope separator which ionized and mass-separated the thallium isotopes was injected into an isothermal vacuum chromatography apparatus. A temperature-dependent adsorption property of thallium atom on SiO surface were measured. The adsorption enthalpy of thallium was determined to be 158 kJ/mol. The thallium is a homolog of element 113. Thus, the vacuum chromatography developed in this study enables us to perform chemical experiments for short-lived superheavy elements with half-lives of a order of one second.

A tubular flow reactor was tested to decompose the hexacarbonyl complexes and to extract the first bond dissociation energies. A silver was found to be the most appropriate reaction surface to study the decomposition of the group 6 hexacarbonyl. It was found that the surface temperature at which the decomposition occurred was correlated to the first bond dissociation energy of Mo(CO) and W(CO), indicating that the first bond dissociation energy of Sg(CO) could be determined with this technique.

The short-lived isotopes with high recoil energy directly react with carbon-monoxides and form carbonyl complexes. Only highly volatile complexes were fast transported in a gas stream to counting and chemistry devices. Short-lived Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, W, Re, Os, and Ir were found to form volatile carbonyl complexes, while no volataile complex of Hf and Ta were detected. This technique has been applied to a chemical investigation of the superheavy element Sg (atomic number 106), and will be applicable to various fields of nuclear science with short-lived transition metal isotopes.

In this technique, a hydrophobic membrane is utilized to separate an aqueous phase from the gas phase. With this technique, the dissolution efficiencies of short-lived radionuclides of Mo and W were measured. Yields of more than 80% were observed for short-lived radionuclides at aqueous-phase flow rates of 0.1-0.4 mL/s. The gas flow-rate had no influence on the dissolution efficiency within the studied flow range of 1.0-2.0 L/min. These results show that this technique is applicable for on-line chemical studies of SHEs in the liquid phase.

Nuclear reaction products of short-lived Sg preseparated with a gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS at RIKEN were directly injected into a gas cell filled with He/CO mixture gas, and chemical reaction products of volatile carbonyl complexes were trasported to COMPACT. The Sg carbonyl complex detected with COMPACT was found to be very volatile with adsorption enthalpy of 50 kJ/mol, from which we have concluded that this complex should be a Sg hexacarbonyl Sg(CO). This is the first synthesis of organometallic compounds of transactinide elements for which only simple inorganic comounds have been synthesized so far.

We successfully ionized and mass-separated for the first time Lr ions by applying the present ion-source and the ISOL technique. The ionization efficiencies of Lr were estimated to be approximately 42% and 24% at 2600 K on Re and Ta surfaces, respectively. These values were higher than those of Lu in all of ionization condition. The results indicate that the ionization potential of Lr would be lower than that of Lu, 5.4 eV. Therefore, it is concluded that the surface ion-source is a promising apparatus tomeasure the first ionization potential of Lr. Using the present system, determination of the ionization potential of Lr is being performed.

To measure radioactivities in soil contaminated by the accident of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, efficiency calibration of Ge detectors for I, Cs, and Cs in volume sources was investigated. -ray detection efficiencies for these nuclei were determined precisely using standard soil samples containing Cs, Cs, Hf, and Zr. These standard sources were prepared by admixing radioactive solutions with soil, and point sources were made from the same solutions to determine their radioactivity concentrations. Cascade summing corrections for rays of Cs in soil samples were evaluated experimentally. To easily calculate the cascade summing corrections for volume sources, we examined a simplified method using averaged efficiencies, and evaluated its validity through a comparison of the calculated correction factors with the experimental ones.

The massive earthquakes and the following tsunami that struck the Tohoku and north Kanto regions of Japan on 11 March 2011 caused severe damage of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. In consequence, a large amount of radio isotopes accumulated in the nuclear reactor was discharged to environment of Tohoku and Kanto region. Assessment of individual radionuclide distributions on soil in the area is required because of estimation of radiation dose rate for people in the area from the contaminated surface, planning for cultivation, and establishment of regional land utilization. We performed to collect soil samples around north part of Ibaraki prefecture, and measured -ray of soil samples by using high pure Ge detectors, and assessed the individual distribution of radio isotopes.

Anion-exchange behavior of the group-6 elements, W and Mo, in HF and HNO mixed solutions has been studied by a batch method using the carrier-free radiotracers W and Mo. The long-lived isotope W and the short-lived isotope Mo were produced in the Ta(p,n) and the Nb(p,n) reaction at the JAEA tandem accelerator, respectively. The solutions containing W or Mo were mixed with anion exchange resin. Radioactivities of the solution were assayed for -ray spectrometry, and then distribution coefficients (Ks) of these elements were determined. It was found that the K values of W depend strongly on the concentration of HF, while those of Mo are almost constant as a function of [HF] under the given conditions.

- spectroscopy of Db, the element 105, was performed for the first time, and the first experimental information on the proton configuration of the ground state of Db was obtained. Non observation of and X rays following its decay indicates that the decay of Db directly populates the 7/2[514] ground state or the 1/2[521] isomeric state in the daughter nucleus Lr, and does not populate the 9/2[624] excited state. This result indicates that the proton configuration of the ground state of Db should not be the theoretically predicted 9/2[624], but the 7/2[514] or 1/2[521].

Redox potential of mendelevium (Md) was determined by an electrolytic chromatographic method on a single atomic scale. Mendelevium-255 produced in the Cm(B, 4n) reaction at the JAEA tandem accelerator was dissolved with 0.10 M HCl and was fed into a flow electrolytic column apparatus of which the working electrode was modified with cation-exchange resin. The elution of Md on the electrode was studied as a function of the applied potential. The redox potential of Md was determined to be -0.18 V vs. a normal hydrogen electrode.

The first ionization potential (IP) of the last actinide, lawrencium (Lr), is predicted to be lower than those of other actinides. To determine the IP of Lr based on the surface ionization comparison technique, we are developing a surface-ionization-type ion-source coupled to a gas-jet transport system at the Isotope Separator On-Line at the JAEA tandem accelerator facility. In the present study, we measured ionization efficiencies of lanthanides as a function of ion-source temperature to examine the applicability of our apparatus to the IP measurement. It was found that the obtained ionization efficiency of each lanthanide element is affected by an ionization potential as well as a boiling point.
